The teams ended their season series a year ago with 3-1 victories at the other’s ground, the Fire winning at PPL Park on Aug. 12, and Union returning the favor Oct. 3 at Toyota Park.

The Galaxy were in the lead after just three minutes. Landon Donovan launched a corner kick into the box that, with Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez right in front of him, went off the side of goalkeeper Zac MacMath’s face, off the crossbar and into the net for an own goal.

Union pulled level in the 23rd minute when Sheanon Williams launched a long throw-in from the right touchline and found center back Amobi Okugo streaking through the box, and his flick header sailed inside the far post.

The Galaxy broke the game open late. Donovan set up the game-winning goal in the 71st minute with a sharp pass to Robbie Keane, whose cut back to his left and put a cool finish past MacMath while all alone in front of the Union 'keeper.

Donovan and Keane combined for the capper on the counter in the 87th minute, Keane racing upfield before laying the ball square for Donovan to roll home into an unguarded goal from inside the box after cutting past MacMath.

Union team manager John Hackworth made three changes to the team that defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 at Toyota Park. Sheanon Williams returned from suspension, replacing the departed Gabriel Farfan, and Sebastien Le Toux and Jose Kleberson came into the side, in place of Michael Farfan and Conor Casey.

PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-1-4-1): Zac MacMath - Sheanon Williams, Bakary Soumare (Michael Farfan 81), Amobi Okugo, Raymon Gaddis - Brian Carroll - Danny Cruz (Antoine Hoppenot 64), Sebastien Le Toux (Conor Casey 64), Jose Kleberson, Keon Daniel - Jack McInerney.

TEAM NEWS Union have now gone three games without a win at PPL Park (0-1-2) and have won just once in Chester in five

games, the 1-0 win vs. New England on March 16. I think our mentality might be a little tougher on the road and we are trying to push things at home. You

definitely tend to keep a little tighter on the road,” said Union manager John Hackworth. “Honestly, we played probably the best 40 minutes we have played in that first half. We had the two-time defending champions on the rope in a big way and we just have to be able to sustain that.”

The four goals conceded by Union were a season-high and a club record in MLS play, set three times earlier, the last coming in a 4-4 draw vs. New England on Sept. 7, 2011.

“If you want to take that as a 4-1 game, then go for it,” Sheanon Williams said. “But it’s not. We pushed numbers forward, knowing we wanted to get points at home. What does it matter if you lose 3-1 or 8-1? We have to go for the goals. And they punished us for it.”

Union scored a third goal this season from a Williams long throw-in. Conor Casey netted in the March 30 loss at New York and Jack McInerney scored in the April 21 win at D.C. United – where the ball was helped on by Okugo.

José Kléberson made his first start in MLS, coming into a central midfield role and playing the entire match. He made two substitute appearances, totaling 29 minutes, the last on April 27.

“Jose did a good job in his first start and you see a lot of good qualities there. Good performance by him especially the start. Probably tough for him to play 90, but you got to get those game minutes,” said Hackworth. “At the end of the game we were probably not thinking of playing him the full 90 but your thought is that you keep a guy of that quality in the game.”

Said Okugo: “Kléberson came in and did a great job with his through balls and his ability to slow it down and speed it up. Unfortunately he didn’t get a goal, because he was pushing for one. It’s good because he is a different type of player that we are not used to and he made a lasting impact. Hopefully he can start getting minutes.”

Sebastien Le Toux made his first start in six matches, since April 13, coming into a deep-lying striker’s position with McInerney as the spearhead of the attack.

Zac MacMath faced a season-high eight shots in conceded the most goals in his young professional career. “He kept us in the game with a couple of good saves when it was still 1-1 and that is all you can ask. I don’t

fault him for the rest of it. He didn’t deserve to take full credit for sure,” said Hackworth. Said MacMath: “It’s frustrating anytime you give up four goals. Regardless what night it is, it’s not a good night for a goalkeeper.”

CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire went down to defeat for a second consecutive match, dropping a 1-0 decision to Philadelphia Union in the front end of their home-and-home series last Saturday at Toyota Park. The Fire are in a tie for eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 7 points from 9 matches. TEAM NEWS

Fire head coach Frank Klopas made two changes to the team that dropped a 2-0 decision to the Montréal Impact at Stade Saputo. Wells Thompson came back from suspension and Dilly Duka also came into the team, in place of Sherjill MacDonald and the suspended Jeff Larentowicz.

Sherjill MacDonald was a scratch from the lineup, suffering from strep throat. In his stead, Klopas ran out Patrick Nyarko as the spearhead attack with Chris Rolfe as the underneath striker.

“They combined well. They showed well. You can see by the opportunities. Patrick was dangerous, their ability to play off each other and stay more connected. Pushing Danny a little bit higher up the field because everyone has to defend. You need their energy mostly in the final third,” said Klopas. “As a team we are pretty hard. Patrick, when he got the ball, was very good off the dribble. He created a lot of opportunities but he didn't get rewarded with a goal.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Said Nyarko: “It's just a different mentality. Most of the other players think I'm better up there [in the forward position], but I'm just out there trying to do what I do best – creating a bunch of chances and hopefully finishing a few."

The Fire were shut out for a second consecutive game and for the fifth time this season. “It would be different if you’re not creating chances then you could scratch your head. You look at the game, we

had more possession in the second half. There were shots on goals, opportunities,” said Klopas. “I can't tell you, all I can tell you is we had opportunities, but we need to finish. We had five, six, seven chances. It would be nice to score a couple goals to take the pressure off.”

The Fire attack will also be without Maicon Santos for a few weeks after he suffered a shoulder injury. Santos has made eight consecutive appearances off the substitutes’ bench after starting the season opener.

The Fire lost a second 1-0 game this season, also falling by that scoreline to New England on March 9. “We are missing Arne Friedrich in the back for sure, 100 percent,” Klopas said. “His ability to communicate and

over 90 minutes his ability to dictate the backline when to move up and stay connected with the team. He is really good with his feet and plays the right balls at the right time out of pressure. It is huge. We are making some mistakes that are hurting us. We miss Friedrich's leadership on a play like [last week].”

The Fire have conceded five goals from set pieces this season, second-most in MLS, behind D.C. United, who have allowed six on standard situations.

"It was just a quick restart and we didn't step in front of the ball so they couldn't take it quick and we kind of lost McInerney when he got in behind," center back Austin Berry said. "It's pretty frustrating, especially considering how we were playing up to that point, putting a lot of pressure on them and getting chances."

The Union enter the game following a 4-1 loss to Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday night.

LA got on the board early following a Union own goal by keeper Zac MacMath. In the third minute, Landon Donovan took a corner kick which went off MacMath’s face and into the goal.

The Union came back in the 23rd minute to score an equalizer. Amobi Okugo headed a Sheanon Williams throw-in to tie the game. It was Okugo’s second of the year and Williams’ third assist on throw-ins this year.

The Galaxy’s second goal of the night came off the foot of Robbie Keane on a Donovan assist. Donovan collected the ball at the top of the 18 and found Keane on a run behind the defense in the 71st minute.

Just nine minutes later, they tallied another goal, this time from Héctor Jiménez. Donovan added his second assist of the game in a similar play. Starting at the top of the box, he fed Jiménez on a run on the right side of the defense, going far post for the goal.

Donovan capped off his night with a goal of his own in the 87th minute. This time it was Keane finding Donovan on a breakaway. With only MacMath in front of him, Donovan dribbled around the keeper and put an effortless shot in the net.

The game saw four yellow cards given – three for Philadelphia and one for LA. Bakary Soumare, Raymon Gaddis and Amobi Okugo drew cautions in the 53rd, 68th, and 91st minutes, respectively, while Sean Franklin received the LA caution in the 85th minute.

The Galaxy took 15 shots while Philly took 17. Seven of LA’s shots were on goal, compared to three for Philadelphia. The Union committed 16 fouls while LA committed 12. Possession in the game saw the Galaxy hold a 52% to 48% edge.

On the season, the Union are sixth in shots in MLS with 147. They have also committed the third most fouls (170) and have taken the third most corner kicks taken (64).

The Fire enter the game following a 1-0 home loss to the Union.

The first half saw no goals scored. The Fire held a drastic advantage in shots taken in the first half with a 10 to two edge.

The Union would strike for the game’s only goal in the 75th minute, as Jack McInerney scored his league leading seventh goal to put the Union ahead. McInerney was set up by Sebastien Le Toux on a quick restart, when the Frenchman found McInerney streaking past the defense. McInerney pushed his shot past a charging Sean Johnson to put the Union ahead.

Zac MacMath kept the Union in the game as he recorded six saves and helped thwart many other chances. One of Chicago’s best chances came in the 33rd minute when Patrick Nyarko worked past Amobi Okugo, fed the ball to Chris Rolfe who had his close shot blocked by Gabriel Farfan. On the rebound, Dan Paladini shot from close range but MacMath made a save from all fours to preserve the shutout.

The lone disciplinary action taken in the game was in the 62nd minute as Chicago’s Dilly Duka was given a yellow card.

Presented by PPL EnergyPlus:

The game is being presented by PPL EnergyPlus. The first 5,000 fans to enter PPL Park on Saturday will receive a Union scarf from PPL EnergyPlus.

Union Trade:

On Tuesday, the Union traded midfielder Gabriel Farfan to Chivas USA for allocation money and a 2014 Natural First round draft pick.

Looking for a Similar Result:

The Fire and Union are playing for the second time in the span of eight days. Last Saturday, the Union came out victorious with a 1-0 victory.

Finishing a Long Stretch:

This will be the Union’s third game in eight days. They defeated Chicago last Saturday and dropped a contest to Los Angeles in a tilt on Wednesday night.

Parity in the East:

The Union have played eight games against the Eastern Conference this season and have a very even record. They have compiled a 3-3-2 record against Kansas City (L), New England twice (W,L), New York (L), Columbus (T), Toronto (T), D.C. (W), and Chicago (W).

Leading the Race:

With his goal against the Fire last week, Jack McInerney is back in sole possession of the MLS goals scored lead. McInerney has seven goals on the season.

Union Firsts Against Chicago:

Chicago was the victim of Philadelphia’s first ever shutout. The clean sheet came on September 11, 2010 and Brad Knighton was in goal for the Union. Sebastien Le Toux scored a goal in the 36th minute to give Philly the victory.

Michael Farfan’s first career goal came against Chicago in a 2-1 victory on May 21, 2011. The rookie scored the first goal of the game when he took a free-kick pass from Kyle Nakazawa and struck a low, driving shot through traffic and into the net.

Brian Carroll’s first career MLS goal came in a 3-2 win over Chicago in 2005. Carroll was a member of D.C. United at the time.

Kleberson sets record:

Last game against the Galaxy, Kléberson tied the Union franchise record for shots taken in a game with 8.

Return from Suspension:

Chicago midfielder Jeff Larentowicz will be seeing his first game action since he drew an ejection in Chicago’s game against Montreal on April 27th. Larentowicz was given a straight red card for tripping Andrea Pisanu on a run towards goal. Chicago had appealed the suspension but to no avail. He missed their prior game against the Union last week.

The Fire had 15 shots but the Union’s Jack McInerney scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute as the Fire fell 1-0 at Toyota Park May 11. Following the May 18 match, the Fire will return to Philadelphia to take on the Union on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m. CT (My50/La Ley 107.9 FM). The Fire were 2-1-0 against the Union in 2012. Dominic Oduro’s 28th minute header helped lift the Fire over the Union for a 1-0 Toyota Park home opener victory March 24. The Fire conceded the first goal but a Chris Rolfe brace and Arne Friedrich’s first MLS strike defeated the Union 3-1 at PPL Park Aug. 12. Dominic Oduro’s 69th minute goal wasn’t enough as the short-handed Men in Red fell 3-1 to the Union at Toyota Park Oct. 3. QUICK KICKS vs. Philadelphia Union (4-3-3; 15 pts.) - The Fire hold a 3-4-1 all-time regular season record against the Union, including a 1-2-0 record in matches played at PPL Park. - Fire forward Chris Rolfe holds the only multi-goal game between the two sides with this brace in a 3-1 victory at PPL Park Aug. 12. - Five of the Fire’s nine goals against the Union have come in the second half; two between the 46th to 60th minutes and three between the 61st and 75th minutes.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (2-6-1, 7 pts.) enter their 16th season of MLS play after posting a 17-11-6 record, earning 57 points, tied with the 2000 season for the highest point total in club history. Continuity is key for head coach Frank Klopas this season as the team returns 19 players from the 2012 squad that qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2009, including veterans Logan Pause, Patrick Nyarko and Gonzalo Segares. Offseason acquisitions Jeff Larentowicz, Joel Lindpere, Maicon Santos and Dilly Duka bolster the roster for the Men in Red. Sean Johnson returns for his fourth campaign with the Fire. Reigning MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry is set to pair with German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich in central defense. The strike tandem of Sherjill MacDonald and 2012 Fire MVP and Golden Boot winner Chris Rolfe will serve as the scoring force for the Fire in 2013. FIRE – UNION CONNECTIONS This match marks the return of Jeff Larentowicz to both pitch and to his hometown. The Philadelphia, Pa. native missed the May 11 match while serving a one-game suspension for a red card that he received April 27. A graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, Larentowicz lettered in soccer, basketball and golf. The Brown University graduate won back-to-back national championships with FC Delco Arsenal in 2002 and 2003. Union assistant coach Jim Curtain was a member of the Fire for the first seven season of his professional career. Selected in the third round (29th overall) of the 2001 MLS SuperDraft, Curtin made 151 MLS Regular Season appearances for the Men in Red, winning the 2003 and 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships and was named a 2004 MLS All-Star during his time with the Fire. Current Union defender Bakary Soumare spent three seasons with the Fire from 2007-09. Drafted second overall in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, Soumare went on to appear in 63 regular season matches for the Men in Red. Soumare was a 2008 MLS Defender of the Year finalist and was named to the 2009 MLS All-Star team in 2009. Fire defender Jalil Anibaba transferred to the University of North Carolina for his senior collegiate season, appearing in 24 matches while helping the Tar Heels to their third straight NCAA College Cup appearance. While at UNC, Anibaba’s roommate was Union midfielder Michael Farfan. CHICAGO FIRE FALL 1-0 TO PHILADELPHIA UNION The Chicago Fire fell 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union Saturday afternoon at Toyota Park. The Fire created 15 shots on goal but fell victim to a 75th minute goal by Union forward Jack McInerney. After a scoreless first half the Fire came out with renewed vigor and continued to press for the opening goal. In the 48th Gonzalo Segares sent in a cross for the left side to Paladini, who laid the ball off for Nyarko. The fleet-footed Ghanaian was able to pivot and hit a right-footed blast on goal but it banged off the post and out for a Union goal kick. The visitors got the only goal of the match in the 75th minute. The Union won a free kick just inside the Fire’s half. Sebastian Le Toux took a quick restart, sending the ball in behind the Fire backline to Jack McInerney. The Alpharetta, Ga. native took a touch to settle and slotted the ball past Johnson to give the Union the 1-0 lead. The Fire would get one last chance in the waning moments of the match. Rolfe dribbled into the box, played a give-and-go with Segares, and lofted the ball across the goal. The cross was headed out by the Union defense to Quincy Amarikwa, who unleashed a powerful volley toward goal but MacMath was able to punch it out at the last second as the match ended 1-0. CHICAGO FIRE BEGIN QUEST FOR LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP MAY 28 The Fire will begin the journey for its fifth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trophy on Tuesday, May 28 against the winner of the Seattle Sounders U-23 (PDL) vs. Charlotte Eagles (USL-PRO) match scheduled for Tuesday, May 21. The Fire will host the third round match at Toyota Park if the Sounders advance. If the Eagles advance, the Fire will begin Open Cup play on the road at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Recognized as U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt. Since 1998 the Fire have compiled an impressive 29-11-4 record in Open Cup play, reaching the semifinal round eight out of 15 times and the final six times. The Fire have previously hoisted the coveted Dewar Trophy four times, in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006. The 2006 title marked the ninth time a team from Chicago won the Open Cup and made the Fire one of six teams to capture the crown at least four times in the tournament's 99-year-long history. The 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup features a field of 68 teams, the largest field in the modern era (1995-present). Another significant change for 2013 is the process for determining the site for the Open Cup tournament semifinals and final. In past years, the sites for the final three matches of the tournament had been determined through a sealed-bid process, but this year the hosts of those games will be determined by a coin flip. Home teams throughout the entire tournament will be determined by random selection.  A full breakdown of the upcoming schedule and previous results, complete with venue information, visit the following 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup pages:
