There has been a game within a game for East Perth’s rivals this season.

The Royals’ decision to sign an alignment with West Coast has become the most divisive issue in the competition. Opponents have even viewed the deal as treachery.

So bagging East Perth for its decision has quickly become a pastime at every away ground.

Swan Districts expressed their opinion via the scoreboard last month when they referred to the black and blue team as “W.C. Eagles”.

Apart from a sharp retort from president Bronte Howson following the Steel Blue Oval incident, the Royals have let the barbs pass.

However, new East Perth chief executive Dean Turner says it is incorrect to believe the WAFL club

to the Royals

has sold its soul over the arrangement in which all surplus West Coast players will line-up for the Royals from next season. Peel has a similar five-year contract with Fremantle.

“It is only five years in the club’s history of almost 110 years,” Turner said. “It is just a part of that history, it isn’t taking it over.

“Nothing is changing to our identity. We’re still East Perth.

“And this is a two-way deal. It has to work as much for East Perth as anyone else.”

The Royals are taking special steps to preserve and observe the history created in the black V guernsey.

In September the club will recognise the members of the 1956, 1958, 1959, 1972 and 1978 premiership teams with commemorative medallions.

And next month seven former Royals will be inducted into the EPFC Hall of Fame, joining greats including Graham “Polly” Farmer, Jack Sheedy, Mal Brown, and Ted Kilmurray.

Turner, a former East Perth, Fitzroy and West Coast midfielder, understands there will be some changes to the club’s structure next season but has confidence coach Brian Dawson can successfully handle the increased responsibilities for the football department.

The Royals have enjoyed a mid-season spurt under Dawson to grow into a strong 2013 finals fancy.

“I think most of Brian’s teams have started slowly but aim to peak at the right time of the season,” Turner said.

“But our improvement hasn’t been due to the Eagles in the team. In some games we have had just a couple of West Coast players. I think it has been a lift by our youngsters and I look to the Payne boys, Stephen and Jacob, and Mitch Fraser in that regard.

“Having (Eagles) Adrian Hickmott and Phil Narkle around the club has been fantastic for the development of our younger kids and I think that development help will be a benefit for East Perth (under the alignment).

“For the time being though it is just concentrating on the footy. It is still only June. There is plenty of work ahead.”

“It is only five years in the club’s history of almost 110 years. It is just a part of that history it isn’t

taking it over.” – Dean Turner.

Once were EaglesWhile East Perth isn’t planning on a new image – any change to name and jumper would require membership approval – there is an irony about the Royals’ link with West Coast.

In the late 1940s the WAFL club adopted the name “Eagles” following the trend followed by sporting teams around the country.

Unfortunately the form of the original Eagles was far from appeasing and by the early 1950s the decision to abandon the name was abruptly taken by a band of East Perth followers. They took a stuffed eagle from the clubrooms and placed it on a barbecue fire.

By 1956 East Perth had won the flag and went on to enjoy one of its greatest eras. 5

WE STEAL SECRETS – THE STORY OF WIKILEAKS (UNIVERSAL PICTURES)

Australian Rules’ ‘Golden Era’ era debuts on stage at the Subiaco Arts Centre in July.

Written for and about the local legends of amateur football, Keen for a Crownie is a hilarious theatrical show set in the golden era of Western Australian football, the early 90s, which will be on stage from July 10-13. Shows are at 7pm and tickets range from $35-45 and are available from Ticketek.

One of the local legends stepping up to have a crack at being on stage is Simon Robinson, eldest son of West Australian of the year, Bruce Robinson. Simon, a vocal coach and former piano teacher to West Coast coach John Worsfold, took some convincing to step out from his mentoring role and into the limelight.

The storyline follows the plight of a local G Grade football team devastated by the news that their beloved club could be shut down. Suddenly, these heroes are thrust into the centre of a war for pride, turf and a man’s right

Filmed with the startling immediacy of unfolding history Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney’s We Steal Secrets: The Story Of Wikileaks details the creation of Julian Assange’s controversial website, which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S. history.

Hailed by some as a free-speech hero and others as a traitor and terrorist, the enigmatic Assange’s rise

and fall are paralleled with that of Pfc.

Bradley Manning, the brilliant, troubled young soldier who downloaded hundreds of thousands of documents from classified U.S. military and diplomatic servers, revealing the behind-the-scenes workings of the government’s international diplomacy and military strategy.

Opens in cinemas on July 4.

KEEN FOR A CROWNIEto wear footy shorts for as long as his guts will carry him. The question is: how far will they go to protect the club that they call home?

Keen For a Crownie is written and directed by Monique Wilson, a Perth-based playwright who has always loved ‘football-style entertainment’.

Monique has assembled a cast of working actors, ex-WAAPA students, gifted amateurs and professional musicians. Some of them, she wrote a role specifically for, and all of them, in her opinion, are sporting some ‘secret silky skill’. Many of them needed a bit of a push, but uncovering and showcasing raw talent is exactly the vision of The Black Sheep Theatre Company.

The Football Budget has four double passes to give away to see Keen for a Crownie.

Email editor Tracey Lewis at [email protected] with the answer to this question: What is the name of the lead actor in Keen for a Crownie. Competition closes Monday, July 1 at 5pm.

9COLLECTABLESby Sean Cowan

During 2013, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Memorable player badges

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Last week’s article about the 1961 and 1964 sets of tinnie badges, which were issued by the Daily News, got me thinking about other sets of tinnies issued over the years.

Not that there have been that many.

Perhaps the most memorable to those of us who were around in the 1980s were the badges which simply said “I Love East Perth” or “I Hate East Perth”, which obviously came in eight different team names for each type. These were also available for VFL clubs.

I would like to get photographs of all these. So, I’m happy to hear from anyone who has managed to dig a few of these out.

Perhaps more interesting, were the player badges issued in or around 1984.

These large-format tinnies measured about 6.5cm in diameter and featured the stars of the competition on a background which made use of their team’s colours.

These can also be found for the VFL clubs. So far, I have seen seven WAFL player badges and the only season in which those players were all playing in the WAFL was 1984, so it’s fair to assume they were issued in that year.

Those players were Shane Ellis (EF), Stan Magro (EP), Rhett Baynes (P), Peter Bosustow (P), Brian Cousins (P), Earl Spalding (P) and Robert Wiley (P).

Does anyone know who made them? And has anyone got a pile of them somewhere? I would love to get a full list of them together and suspect there would be someone out there who bought the lot, perhaps from The Footy Shop in Oxford St, Leederville.

East Perth supporter Steve dug out a different type of tinnie after reading last week’s column. His Royals badges is from the only other set I’m aware of, which probably dates to the 1970s.

I have a Claremont badge from this set but, as always, I’m now wondering whether anyone else has any others?

After writing last week about Daily News memorabilia because of the tinnies the newspaper issued in the early 1960s, I received a few emails this week asking me about the Daily News’s cloth patches, which were all made between 1960 and 1965.

I will feature one of these sets in each of the next couple of columns, but thought I would start with possibly the most interesting of them – the 1965 set of what the paper called “skipper and team badges”.

These were the paper’s big promotion for that season, and were a direct copy of the captain and team patches issued by the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne the previous year.

Each white cloth patch included a 1960s-style team logo and a head-and-shoulders picture of the team’s captain.

The captains were Les Mumme (C), Bob Johnson (EF), Kevin Murray (EP), Bill Leuzzi (P), Ray Sorrell (SF), Keith Slater (S), Fred Castledine (SD) and Bob Spargo (WP).

Of course, these are pretty tough to find these days. I picked up the Subiaco, Claremont, South Fremantle and Swans patches last year after someone found them pressed inside a second-hand book.

Pat, of Shelley, whose collection has featured in this column a few times, has the East Perth patch. And a Melbourne-based collector has a full set of eight.

b D il NAf i i l k But I’ve never seen any others. I’m always keen to hear from readers about such items. In particular, I would love some photos and to hear about how they were issued, if anyone can remember.

Finally for this week, there have been a few interesting sales since I last reported on auction prices.

An East Fremantle Homecrafts sticker from 1976 fetched $27 at auction, while a set of Swan Districts playing cards from the 1970s sold for $23.

A 1948 text book on football by former Fitzroy, West Adelaide and East Perth rover Seff Parry sold for $31 and a Perth sticker made by cigarette manufacturer Marlboro sold for $25 on the private market.

Finally, a Football Budget from the 1958 grand final between East Perth and East Fremantle sold for $99.

Foxtel Cup Fixtures/Results

If only the WAFL had frequent fl yer miles.

Claremont and East Fremantle could cash in nicely on such a scheme after booking another 2013 journey.

The Tigers and Sharks this weekend take the State league to the top of WA by staging a clash in Kununurra.

It is the first home-and-away match this season to head to a regional area. But it isn’t the first time the competition has staged a fixture outside the greater metropolitan area this year.

The WAFL’s State team defeated the VFL in Northam in May.

Perth will also host West Perth in Moora in round 21.

Claremont and East Fremantle have been busy this season and will finish 2013 with plenty of stamps on the travel card.

The Sharks have already travelled to Adelaide for their Foxtel Cup win over Norwood while the Tigers face a trip to AAMI Stadium next month for their national series semi-final against West Adelaide.

If East Fremantle also wins its Foxtel Cup semi-final at home against Werribee the two WAFL teams could play off for the $100,000 prize in early August.

Game Previews

Swan DiStrictS v weSt PerthSteel Blue OvalWest Perth has a two-pronged plan for Swan Districts. It involves putting clamps on the black and whites’ dangerous duo in attack – Tim Geappen and Dayle Garlett. The pair have popped up midseason to be a damaging double act that could pose problems for the Falcons in their push to confirm a second semi-final spot. Kicking at just 36 per cent in front of goal with more scoring shots that the Swans in their round seven duel, the Falcons will need to make the most of their opportunities in their forward 50 while pressuring the Swans’ backline into creating open spaces. In their current three-game winning streak Swans have ridden consistent performances from Garlett, Matt Riggio and Tom Roach, as well as sharp shooting performances from Tony Notte moving in and out of the forward line. Swans will need to put the Falcons on the back foot defensively by nullifying the influence of Matt Guadagnin, Shane Nelson and Aaron Black. Overall: Swan Districts 82 West Perth 140 Draw 2

claremOnt v eaSt FremantleKununurraEast Fremantle should be angry approaching this fixture in the Kimberley. The Sharks let a winning chance slip away against East Perth in the previous round with some club officials getting a little hot under the collar following the result. The circumstances should fire up Steve Malaxos’ men for a battle that could eventually prove whether East Fremantle is genuine finals material. But Claremont has the biggest guns in the competition. Although the Tigers have suffered from long-term injuries throughout the season they are able to rely on an array of offensive weapons such as Jeremy McGovern, Jack Bradshaw and Ben Daniher to fill the roles. Andrew Foster was in blistering form before last week’s bye while the tandem ruck act of Mitch Andrews and Mark Seaby is becoming a major headache for Claremont’s opposition. The Sharks will want to challenge the Tigers from the outset – the catch-up game can be too taxing. To keep the Sharks on the back foot the Tigers will have to contain Rory O’Brien, Bradd Dalziell and Ryan Lester-Smith without letting up on their wider defensive pressure. Jacob Brennan and Dalziell could line up for their 50th games for the Sharks. O v e r a l l : Claremont 113 East Fremantle 153 Draw 2

eaSt Perth v Peel thunDermedibank StadiumWith the lowest percentage of the finals aspirants, East Perth will need to make every win count to stay in the running for the September action. Peel’s most recent win was against the Royals a month ago, though the Thunder will need to find reliable second half scoring agencies to be able to go the distance with the improving Royals. While the result wasn’t what Peel wanted last Saturday the club was impressed by the work of youngsters Jesse Hockings and Laine Wilkins. They get a strong test again in round 15. The Royals will need to keep Brendon Jones, Matt Orzel and Kris Thornton from taking charge and be wary of the Mandurah team’s ability to now fight out matches regardless of the scoreboard. East Perth must also cover the absence of on-baller Garry Moss, who injured his knee last week. It will be up to Stephen Payne, Cameron Grover, Ashley Boyes and veteran Michael Swan to help fill the gap. Overall: East Perth 31 Peel Thunder 9

SOuth Fremantle v PerthFremantle OvalThere was a bit of a mid-season hiccup but Perth got back to its best last week and will seek to use South Fremantle to secure a place in the top four. The Demons excelled in round 14 over Peel. Matthew Moody played a key role working off half-back, Matt Tedesco delivered the ball well in the forward 50m and Simon Tunbridge was an efficient midfield weapon. Coach Damian McMahon made a statement by relegating Brennan Stack to the reserves last week but his likely return boosts a Perth attacking zone led by Paul Bevan. South Fremantle will provide plenty of concern for the Demons, who will need to keep Mitch Banner, Kris Miller and Ashton Hams in check to gain ascendancy. Bulldogs big man Sean Tighe will need to work hard against Christian Eyres in the ruck to gain the advantage, initiate the Bulldogs’ attack and keep the Demons from getting easy opportunities. Craig White is set to play his 150th game as a Bulldog. Overall: South Fremantle 177 Perth 150

SEVEN West Australian players received All-Australian honours at the completion of the  2013 National Women’s Championships in Cairns last weekend.

They included defenders Fiona Boucher, Kara Donnellan and Kirby Bentley, on-ballers Rheanne Lugg and Dana  Hooker, half-forward Shelley Matcham and full-forward Chelsea Randall, who all starred for WA during the course of the championships.

The event involved eight teams in two divisions, with WA competing against Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales in Division One.

After convincing wins over Queensland and New South Wales, WA fought hard against eventual champions Victoria but couldn’t defeat their more experienced opponents in the Division One grand final.

ACT won the Division Two championship.

WAFL Round 13 featured fi eld umpires, Nathan Williamson, Trent McPhee and Justin Power make in their league debuts. These promotions capped off meteoric rises through the fi eld ranks for the trio.

Nathan Williamson joined the WAFL panel in 2011 after beginning umpiring in the Peel Football League.

His talent was soon identified and he was swiftly promoted to reserves football, where his strong performances earned him the 2012 Shadforth Insurance Brokers Rising Star Award.

A strong start to the 2013 season enabled Williamson to knock down the door for league selection, eventually getting his appointment to umpire the game between Perth and East Perth.

Speaking after the announcement, Williamson said that it felt like he had “won the lotto”.

“I have been buzzing ever since. Words can’t describe how excited I was. It was the most excited I have ever been, although there were definitely a few nerves,” he said.

Williamson paid tribute to a number of people who had helped him on his umpiring journey.

“I obviously owe a huge thank you to Darryl Sinclair and Graeme Zanich, as well as all of the other coaches and my fellow umpires. I’d also like to thank the Peel Football Umpires Association for all of their support over the years I was there,” he said.

“In addition, former WAFL umpire Matt Kelleher has been a major influence and mentor on my umpiring, and finally mum and dad have been the two most influential people in my life, so I’d like to thank them for all of their time and support over the years.”

McPhee and Power are considered to be something of a double act, as one is rarely seen without the other and they have even been known to sport matching haircuts.

In addition to this, they both started umpiring in the West Perth Junior District, joined the WAFL panel together in 2012, made their colts debut in Round 2, 2012, and then their reserves debuts within a week of each other earlier in 2013.

Now they have also made their league debuts on the same day! McPhee was appointed to the Round 13 game between Claremont and Peel, while Power officiated in the game between Subiaco and Swan Districts.

Speaking on the eve of his game, Power described his emotions upon hearing about his selection.

“I was a bit surprised that my League debut has come so quickly, however, I am extremely honoured to be selected and I’m very excited, although a little bit nervous, about the game on Saturday,” he said.

“It’s also great that I can share this milestone with two blokes in Trent and Nathan who have come through the umpiring pathway with me.”

Power said that the influence of a number of senior umpires and coaches had played a significant role in improving his umpiring over the last two seasons.

“Ever since I’ve been on the WAFL Panel I’ve learnt a lot from simply running with a lot of the senior umpires down here. In particular, I’d like to thank my mentor, Alex Martin, for his advice and support, and I’m really looking forward to umpiring League football with him on Saturday. And of course the coaching I’ve received at the WAFL, headed by Darryl and Graeme, has been fantastic and helped take my umpiring to a new level,” he said.

McPhee also expressed surprise and excitement upon hearing about his selection. “I was pretty surprised to make my league debut so soon, especially since I felt that I was only just starting to consolidate my reserves position. However, this is hopefully the beginning of an exciting phase of my umpiring career, and I can’t wait to get on the ground on Saturday.”

Similar to McPhee and Power , there were a number of people Trent wanted to acknowledge.

“All the coaches I’ve had so far have helped my umpiring in some way, in particular Darryl and Graeme at the WAFL, and Terry Battle at the Amateurs. Jordy Wright has also been a great mentor over the past few years, and I’d also like to thank Justin Power for being my training partner and best mate. Obviously I wouldn’t be here without my parents, so I want to thank them for all of their love and support.”

Online learning for umpires has taken off in 2013 thanks to some great work by the AFL to make a number of new programs and tools available.

This will not only assist in the recruitment, retention and development of umpires but allow all football stakeholders to gain a greater understanding of laws and umpiring techniques and even provide an opportunity for them to meaningfully assist umpires on game day.

This online opportunity is available through the AFL Community Club Website - www.aflcommunityclub.com.au  which offers many umpiring programs ranging from a basic introduction to a full Level 1 umpire accreditation.

Other online tools include the AFL Laws DVD, AFL Law Book, a Basic Introduction to Umpiring DVD and a number of training, fitness and health programs.

Importantly, the Level 1 umpire accreditation is now online for all umpiring disciplines. As the AFL strives to have every game controlled by an Accredited umpire, this online program is seen as critically important.

It now removes any stumbling blocks for someone wishing to become accredited and only costs $12.

The program contains eight modules which will equip the participant with all the introductory skills to umpire a match of Australian football.

Another important program that has been developed is the umpire’s assessor course. This program allows umpire coaches and mentors to receive training on best practice methods for coaching umpires and is a tool that can also be accessed by football stakeholders to provide meaningful feedback to umpires.

The AFL has also appointed Adam Davis as National Umpire Development Manager – a critical role in the overall development of umpiring.

The appointment of Davis, who is an ex-AFL umpire and has also worked in umpire coaching at VFL and AFL level, will no doubt compliment the online programs and tools, providing a renewed focus on umpire development across Australia.

Online learning takes off for umpires

Fight for finals cranks up

By Sophie James

Ocean Ridge v Coolbinia West Perth

ROUND 11 of the WA Amateur Football League C1 division looks to be pivotal to the season with the fi ght to stay competitive reaching do or die stages for a number of clubs.

With eight rounds remaining, the battle for four points is becoming intense as teams fight for their opportunity at finals.

Wanneroo proudly sit at the top of the ladder on 40 points, enjoying the undefeated status they hold after 10 games this season.

After finishing fifth on the C1 ladder 2012, Wanneroo have proven themselves so far this season and will be looking to finish the season in strong form.

This weekend, Wanneroo will host second-placed Kelmscott at the Wanneroo Showgrounds.

Having won eight games this season, Kelmscott will be looking to shorten the gap between first and second and claim the four points.

Sitting four points behind Kelmscott is Kingsway, and eight points beneath is Gosnells who are ready to fight for their spot the top four.

Biting at the heels of Gosnells are Ocean Ridge, Melville, Lynwood Ferndale and Coolbinia West Perth who claim fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth position respectfully and are only separated by percentage.

With just one win separating fourth from eighth, the contest in the C1 competition is about to heat up with every game being vitally important to each club’s finals dreams.

Sitting just outside fourth position, Ocean Ridge will play a bottom-of-the-ladder Thornlie this weekend.

Fourth-placed Gosnells, will be looking to secure their position as they travel to Coolbinia Reserve, to play Coolbinia West Perth.

If the hosts claim the victory, they will be on equal points with Gosnells, and will be joined by the winner of the Lynwood Ferndale and Melville match who both currently sit on 16 points.

Relegation looms for Kingsley and Thornlie who have both only managed two wins this season.

Despite their lowly ladder position, both teams could both disrupt the ladder significantly if they can take wins from their next few games.

Only two wins away from fifth position, Kingsley will take on third placed Kingsway this weekend and after a loss in their round two game they will be looking for retribution.

Thornlie will host Ocean Ridge at Thornlie Oval and will be looking to take advantage of the home ground advantage.

Can You Help?In the 69 seasons since open football resumed in 1945, 6063 diff erent players have debuted in WAFL league football. Of these, the WAFC, after extensive research, is missing a date of birth for 245 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records for 10 of the players for whom birth and other details are sought. These include:

Keith Lewis Aitken (Perth 1945-46, 4 games) – ex Armadale died 1995

Ronald C Fry (Swan Districts 1958, 6 games) – ex Guildford

Anthony Gravener (West Perth 1994, 20 games) – ex Maffra, Vic?

Norman Keith Haines (East Perth 1948, 1 game) – died 2010

Paul Stephen Josephson (South Fremantle 1959, 3 games) – died 2008?

Richard D Langley (Claremont 1945-46, 20 games)

Rodney Stephen McPhee (Perth 1981, 1 game)

Noel Francis Rooney (Swan Districts 1948, 18 games) – died 2007 Bunbury

Eric Lindsay Short (South and East Fremantle 1953-1957, 48 games) – died 1954 aged 35

Anthony Thomas Weatherald (Claremont 1958, 1 game)

Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
