About the Big RedCornell – the first of five 20-game winners on the Bona non-conference slate- hosts St. Bonaventure at Newman Arena Nov. 19.

Cornell 2010-11Cornell (2-1) is coming off a 75-61 win over Delaware on Wednesday night. Max Groebe and Chris Wroblewski finished with 13 points apiece with Groebe adding a team-high six rebounds, while Wroblewski handed out four assists. Senior Anthony Gaitlin put on a shooting clinic, finishing the night perfect from the floor, going 4-for-4 overall, 3-for-3 from 3-point range and 1-for-1 from the charity stripe for a season-high 12 points. Included was a four-point play that energized the crowd as the Big Red pulled away after halftime.

The 2009-10 Cornell squad won an Ivy League record 29 contests en route to a third straight Ivy League title. The Big Red defeated a pair of ranked teams (Temple and Wisconsin) by double figures before bowing out of the NCAA tournament with a loss to top-seeded Kentucky.

Head Coach: Bill Courtney first seasonCornell opened its first season under Bill Courtney by defeating Albany, 65-61, Nov. 12. Courtney replaced Steve Donohue, who moved on to Boston College after 10 seasons in Ithaca. The Big Red were set back, 92-68, at Seton Hall Nov. 14 before defeating Delaware.

Big Red BlipsGuard Chris Wroblewski was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2008-09, followed by being tabbed Honorable Mention All-Ivy League last season as a sophomore. Cornell’s all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage, Wroblewski missed the first two games this season with broken bones in his nose.

SBU vs. the Ivy League The Bonnies are 11-11 all-time versus current members of the Ivy League, with Cornell representing half of those meetings. St. Bonaventure has lost its last seven against Ivy League opponents.

Series Snapshot The Bonnies trail, 8-3, in the series which has been dominated by the Big Red in its recent history. St. Bonaventure has not defeated Cornell since back-to-back wins in the 1976-77 and 1977-78 seasons. The only other SBU win in the series came in the 1927-28 season.

About the Bearcats Binghamton (2-0) hosts St. Bonaventure Nov. 21 at the Events Center.

Binghamton 2010-11Bucknell (1-2) used a 23-0 run that spanned both halves to take control in a 66-38 win over visiting Binghamton (1-1) Wednesday night from Sojka Pavilion. The Bearcats, who led by six midway through the first half, went scoreless for nearly 13 minutes and shot just 25% for the game. Senior forward Greer Wright was the lone bright spot on offense, producing 21 points. Wright shot 7-for-15 from the field but the rest of the team was a dismal 7-for-42 (17%).

Interim Head Coach: Mark Macon second season The Bearcats endured an emotional 13-18 season in which Kevin Broadus resigned mid-way through due to an NCAA recruiting violations investigation. Second-year interim head coach Mark Macon helped the Bearcats battle back from a 3-8 start to finish with 13 wins. Bearcat Bites The Bearcats are returning four of five starters

and nine of their 13 players from last season. They are led by a former NBA first round draft pick, Mark Macon. Senior forward Greer Wright was named America East Player of the Week on Nov. 15, the first week of the season. Wright scored 27 points versus Colgate in the Bearcats’ season opener, including 20 points in the second half.

SBU vs. the America East: 15-5Series Snapshot: The Brown and White lead the series 2-1, but both wins have come at the Reilly Center. Binghamton’s lone victory came at the Events Center, where Binghamton’s average attendance of 3,894 per game led the America East Conference.

Series SnapshotSt. Bonaventure leads the series, 2-1, and has won each of the last two meetings by a wide margin (17- and 26 points). Last year, a 35-6 run that stretched from the end of the first half through the opening 12 minutes of the second half helped SBU shake off a slow start en route to a 66-40 win Nov. 20 at the Reilly Center. Senior Jonathan Hall led the

way with 12 points, while sophomore Michael Davenport finished with 10 points. Andrew Nicholson fell just one point shy of a double-double with nine points, a game-high 11 rebounds and four blocks. Marquise Simmons gathered eight rebounds in just 11 minutes of work.

Out of Our LeagueAll but four of the 12 teams on the non-conference docket ended last season with winning records. In total, the Bonnies’ opponents racked up a 232-163 record in 2009-10 for a .587 win percentage. That number includes 20-game winners Cornell (29-5), Siena (27-7), Virginia Tech. (25-9), Marshall (24-10) and Ohio (22-15).

In the Record BookFollowing two standout seasons, junior F Andrew Nicholson already ranks third in career blocks (136) and projects to be one of the greatest statistical players in St. Bonaventure history. He entered the year as Bonnies’ all-time field goal percentage leader (.580) ahead of Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and St. Bonaventure great Bob Lanier.

Nostradamus on NicholsonShould he record two more seasons similar to those already in the books, Nicholson will notch: 1,849 points (would rank sixth at SBU), 819 rebounds (fifth) and 272 blocks (second). It is also likely that he will become the 22nd player in school history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds (needs 110 points and 100 rebounds).

#100 for SchmidtNow entering his fourth season at St. Bonaventure, head coach Mark Schmidt will coach his 100th game at St. Bonaventure

Dec. 18, nine games into the season, when the Bonnies host Ohio University in a non-conference tilt at the RC. Schmidt’s .419 (39-54) win percentage at SBU is the highest by a Bonnies’ mentor since current Rhode Island coach Jim Baron’s .502 (132-131) mark compiled from 1992-01. Schmidt and Baron are the only two coaches to post a win-loss percentage over .400 since the start of the 1987 season.

Home Sweet HomeThe Bonnies defeated Arkansas Little Rock in their home-opener this season. In 15 games at Bob Lanier Court at the Reilly Center last year, St. Bonaventure earned a 10-5 record - the most since the 2002-03 season (9-3). Through 44 years as the home court, St. Bonaventure is 391-180 (.684) all-time in the venerable RC.

2010-11 Season PreviewThe St. Bonaventure University men’s basketball team ended the 2009-10 season with a 15-16 overall mark that included a 7-9 record in Atlantic 10 conference play. Third-year head coach Mark Schmidt guided the Bonnies to a No. 8 seed in the A-10 Championship, where the team earned its first postseason win since 2002 by eliminating No. 9 Duquesne, 83-71, in an opening-round game on Bob Lanier Court at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies have now won 15 games in consecutive seasons after an 8-22 (2-14) showing in Schmidt’s first season.

Chasing .500After recording a 15-15 mark in 2008-09, SBU fell one game short of .500 last season by booking a 15-16 record. St. Bonaventure enjoyed a streak of 28 consecutive seasons of .500-or-better basketball from 1956-57 to

1983-84, but has just eight such seasons in the last 25. SBU has 63 seasons at or above .500 in 89 years.

International Men of MysteryFour players on the 2010-11 roster hail from outside of the United States. Andrew Nicholson (Mississauga) and freshman Matt Wright (Toronto) both came to St. Bonaventure from Ontario, Canada, while Ogo Adegboye (London, England) and Sam de Haas (Den Bosch, Netherlands) have European roots.

Ahead of Schedule? Now entering his fourth season at the helm of the Bonnies, head coach Mark Schmidt is ahead of schedule with respect to his previous head coaching stint at Robert Morris. During his third and fourth season at RMU, Schmidt posted back-to-back seasons with the same number of wins (14) before guiding the team to a record over .500 (15-14). At St. Bonaventure, Schmidt has guided the team to 15 wins in each of the last two campaigns in his second and third seasons with the program. St. Bonaventure has not finished a season over .500 since 2001-02 (17-13).

Ogo in the Olympics?Senior G Ogo Adegboye spent his summer playing for Great Britain in the Eurobasket qualifying tournament. In contrast with other sports which receive an automatic Olympics berth as host nation, GB basketball must qualify for the London 2012 games and took a big step toward that goal by advancing to its fourth-straight Eurobasket championship that will take place in Lithuania in 2011. Adegboye was playing on the U23 team but received a call-up to the senior men’s team after injuries to several players, including Chicago Bulls’ star Luol Deng, short changed GB head coach Chris Finch’s options. Adegboye earned the starting point guard spot in all eight games and averaged 4.8 points and 21.1 minutes per contest with a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio.
