ENVIRONMENT AND GREEN BUILDING

In this vision, the building is not an object in itself, separated from the context, but part of an interactive and dynamic system based on the usage of renewable resources that keeps in account natural elements such as basic materials of the project. These are selected and offered to the customers, based on meticulous research comparing products between them and evaluating the different environmental impacts at all stages of their lifecycle.

We work in order to integrate the endeavor in the environment and nature by applying the concept of economy, considered not as the lowest cost at short term but as a system enabling to prevent losses and maximize efficiency and sustainability.

“Dry” construction and the usage of wooden modular units enable 75% energy savings compared to any other constructive model, creating healthy, safe and environmentally friendly areas that contribute to cleaning the environment.

The goal of building, renovating and restoring is the well-being of the inhabitants, considered as a physical or mental state contributing to the individual’s health, socio-economic balance and the care of the natural habitat. “Reinforced” wood is our ally for creating sustainable constructions, enabling man to be responsible towards the environment.

Page 14: Gandelli Group Brochure 2015 [English]

11

With current technology and engineering, we have eliminated the historical limits of wood including size, strength and consistency of the final product, offering new horizons for many applications of wood in construction.

THE TIMBER REVOLUTION

Today, thanks to technological innovation and the discovery of new types of chemical treatments, there is the possibility to achieve the same kind of architecture with a frame made entirely of wood, thanks to the use of laminated panels glued to crossed CLT layers” con “using laminated panels glued and crossed CLT layers.

In the early 1900s, the first multi-storey buildings with a reinforced concrete structure were made, taking advantage of the revolutionary potential of the time enabling the realization of planar structural elements thanks to the characteristics of the processed material. This was how concrete took the place of traditional materials (metal, wood, stone) becoming the most widely used for the construction of buildings.

12

Cross laminated timber are planar multilayer elements, made up of the superposition of several layers of wood glued together and turned alternatively, generally at an angle of 90°.

CLT PANELS

The number of panel layers is odd (and greater than or equal to 3) in order to provide a symmetrical structure to ensure dimensional stability, effective mechanical and physical behavior, and avoiding unwanted deformations.

Several combinations of longitudinal and transverse layers of an element enable the realization of various structures of multilayer panel for the purpose of optimization with regards to structural requirements and resistance.

Through cross-layering of boards, we have the possibility to unload the weight along two main axes, main characteristic of reinforced concrete construction.

These panels are already fitted in the factory with openings and spaces on which doors and windows, elevators, stairs and technical facilities will be directly mounted.

The execution times on site are reduced and project management is simplified.

Page 16: Gandelli Group Brochure 2015 [English]

13

Construction increases progressively starting from the reinforced concrete foundation on which are fixed the elements of the wall in the first place, and then the floor panels. The links between the structu-ral components are made using metal connectors of steel capable of conveying the efforts, ensuring the maintenance and simplifying installation operations on the site.

Wood is the world’s oldest building material and now it appears to be the most modern of all. Building and living in a wooden house is not only environmentally friendly, but also healthier and more pleasant. If the goal is to realize buildings with high quality standards that are maintained over time, while respecting the environment and maintaining an excellent price/quality ratio, wood is the solution corresponding to your requirements.

HIGH ENERGY PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY

BENEFITS

Project management uses executive methods that enable the use of dry laminated construction with record times, as the panel, pre-cut into finite sizes with openings and integrated systems, it is delivered directly to the construction site and assembled with simple and easy to perform connections.

With this type of structural architecture, pieces that are unique and tightly adherent

to the executive designs are produced, characterized by joints that reduce the margin of error in all executive phases.

Costs will remain on the same level of the starting price, without any unpleasant surprises throughout the construction.

Easy, quick and safe!

Page 20: Gandelli Group Brochure 2015 [English]

Our well-being depends largely on the environment surrounding us and on the materials our buildings are made of, because this is where we spend most of our time. Selecting a type of construction in wood for private spaces, public spaces, leisure and work has a positive effect on the quality of life.

Wood construction is the perfect synthesis of comfort, energy saving and environmental protection. Choosing this material becomes a way of life. It is a conscious choice and planning for a better future.

SUSTAINABILITY

18

Wood is a renewable resource. From the forest, environmental sustainability is guaranteed, because for every tree cut there is an appropriate number of trees planted according to specific reforestation policies that protect the forests.

During the treatment process of the trunk there is no remainder. All production elements are retrieved and recycled, reproducing wood in other forms.

Multilayered wooden structures, in combination with insulating materials, transform environments into real oasis of privacy and tranquility, an essential characteristic for a 360° habitat welfare.

This way, thermal and acoustic performance are such that they be classified as the best energy classes, recognized at an international level.

Wood components are durable and present an excellent balance in energy and CO2, thus providing an important contribution to climate protection. Wood has low thermal conductivity and thus provides an important thermal insulation, enabling both a reduction in thickness of the cavities and insulating layers and a reduction in the consumption of management throughout the year. In addition, wood is breathable and acts as a natural moisture regulator: it absorbs when the surroundings are moist and gives away when it is dry, thus creating an internal microclimate. It has an incredible vapour permeability, favoring the spontaneous release of odors and stale air.

The earthquake is a wave motion phenomenon involving the structure as a whole along horizontal

and vertical forces.

By simplifying and summarizing the problem, seismic forces acting on a building can be calculated

according to Newton's law: Force = Mass x Acceleration.

Buildings constructed with lightweight and flexible materials such as wood (with which planes used to

be built of) have a reduced weight and will therefore be affected by minor seismic forces.

XLam proves to be a particularly suitable material in the event of an earthquake. It is strong and rigid

thanks to its composition made of several crossed layers, enabling it to absorb and transmit to the

foundations various constraints and forces from all directions. It trembles with the land, preserving its

structural properties.

IF THE HOUSE IS MADE OF WOOD, THE EARTHQUAKE IS NOT FRIGHTENING!

Wood is notoriously a combustible material, but in case of fire the elements retain their structural and load-bearing function for very long periods.

This is because the degradation time of wood’s mechanical properties is long, unlike what happens to all the other materials when the temperature increases.

Wood has the property to develop a protective layer, a so-called carbon layer: it prevents and slows down combustion, thus opposing the spread of fire.

Contrary to what one might think, it is conceiva-ble to consider wood as preferable to other materials in the choice of structural systems.

EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE RESISTANCE

In the picture you can see how the wooden beam has maintained its structural identity while steel beams are distorted due to excessive heat.

SOFIE PROJECT

22

Test realized by National Research Council (CNR)

In 2007, a wooden house with 7 floors and 24 meters high, made entirely out of XLam, has successfully resisted a series of seismic tests.

1. Kobe earthquake: magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale2. Niigata-Chuetsu earthquake: magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale

Both tests were performed by giving the vibrating table three-dimensional movements such as those from earthquakes.

After over 10 consecutive earthquakes, no residual displacement has been reported, meaning the building has always returned to its formal state, maintaining its structure intact.

The structure has resisted unscathed.

At the experimental field for fire tests, a test took place with a real fire in a three-storey building with a structure made entirely of wood and solid cross-laminated wood panels.

The fire was started with a load twice as large than a normal load in a hotel room.

The fire affected the structure of the building marginally, and smoke as well as fire remained inside the room without spreading to other places of the building.

After 60 minutes, the fire was quickly extingui-shed using water cannons, and the building only suffered local damage that can be easily repaired.

We are now going to show you some of our accomplishments and projects that are underway. As you can see, achievable types are endless since constructive wood technology allows for freedom in archi-tectural imagination.
