PORTS IN INDIAIndia has not been able to emerge as forerunner in International Trade despite :

Strategic location in Indian Ocean

Extensive Coast line of over 7000 Kms

Strong maritime tradition

Mineral rich hinterland

Major ports are not efficient due to draft restrictions, low mechanization / technology orientation & labor unrest, resulting in inefficiencies like :

Smaller parcel size

Pre-berthing delays

Conventional handling of cargo resulting in cargo loss

High turn around times

Up gradation, expansion & development of new ports is vital to handleUp gradation, expansion & development of new ports is vital to handle growing cargo volumes and strengthen India’s position in world trade

CARGO HANDLING AT INDIAN PORTS : CONSTRAINTS

Limited dedicated cargo handling capacity

Inadequate drafts resulting in smaller parcel sizes

Some constraints limiting efficiency at ports

→Congestion at Ports

Pre berthing delays→Pre-berthing delays

→Conventional handling of cargo resulting in higher cargo losses

Infrastructural constraints and operational inefficiencies at Indian Ports result in higher cost of handling, cargo loss,

increased turnaround time and penal demurrage charges adding up to cost of imported / exported cargo

GANGAVARAM PORT : STRATEGIC ADVANTAGESGangavaram Port provides a sustainable and optimum solution to Importers and Exporters in the region resulting in the following advantages and savings :

Reduced ocean freight owing to larger parcel sizes at deep draft berths (19.5 m depth, which is theDeepest in India) and improves FOB realization for export cargoDeepest in India) and improves FOB realization for export cargo

Ocean freight savings by shifting completely to gearless vessels

No draft restrictions, all cargo loaded / unloaded at one berth in single operation, resulting in fasterturnaround of vesselsturnaround of vessels

Minimal pre-berthing delays and savings on demurrage charges.

High load and discharge rates for bulk and break bulk cargoes.g g g

Advanced material handling system resulting in efficient operations and minimum cargo handlinglosses

Vast storage areaVast storage area

Smooth and fast evacuation of cargo from port using world class Port Railway Terminal.

Gangavaram port has redefined port operational standards in India. It is the only port in India capable of handling super capesize ships carrying Coal and Iron Ore of even 200,000

DWT. The Cargo loading and unloading systems are among the best in Asia and have revolutionized the manner cargo is handled at Indian Ports
