YARD WASTE COLLECTION (For Dutton, Iona, Iona Station and Wallacetown only)Please DO:• Place yard waste at the curb by 7:00am - note
crews will only make one pass on each street• Use compostable paper bags• We accept: plant trimmings, brush, leaves,
pumpkins, grass clippings• Brush (sticks and twigs) must be less than 10cm
in diameter and 1m in length - tie bundles with twine
• Maximum weight per bag is 20kg (44lbs)
Please DO NOT:• Use plastic bags (compostable included)• We do not accept: kitchen scrap, sod, rocks,
dirt/soil, large branches, tree stumps, railway ties, painted or treated wood, fl ower pots/trays, animal waste
Compost is no longer accepted at the Dutton Dunwich Landfi ll Site. The following are tips for how you can compost at home:- Follow the Backyard Composting Guide by FreeGarden Earth
http://enviroworld.ca/earth_pdf/GuideToBackyardCompostingJan10b2011_EMAIL.pdf- Start your pile: you can purchase a commercial composter, build one (using anything from chicken wire to pallets), or simply have an open pile.- Place your compost pile in a partially shaded, easy to reach spot in your yard.- Mix equal amounts of “greens” (fruit and vegetable scraps, fresh grass, egg shells) and “browns” (straw, dried leaves, wood shavings, shredded paper) into the pile. Each time you add “greens” you should add “browns”. It’s a good idea to keep a pile or bag of dried leaves handy for this purpose.- Omit certain food scraps that are not recommended for your backyard composter: meat, bones, dairy products, fats. These items take longer to break down and may attract animals.- Moisten the pile. It should be moist but not dripping wet; turn it every week or two through the spring, summer, and fall.- Dig your “black gold” into your vegetable and fl ower gardens, or spread it on your lawn and around trees and shrubs. When it’s fi nished, you’ll know. It will be dark, rich and earthy smelling.

MYTHS ABOUT COMPOSTING AT HOMEMyth 1: It’s too complicated.Fact: Making compost is an easy and natural process. Organic materials want to break down into compost. (Consider how leaves on the forest fl oor decompose, releasing nutrients back to the trees.)
Myth 2: You have to follow a recipe.Fact: Although complex compost recipes exist, you can easily create high-quality compost by layering a variety of moist ingredients (like kitchen scraps) and dry ingredients (like leaves).
Myth 3: It takes too long.Fact: While an open pile that never gets turned might take several seasons to decompose, with an effi cient tumbling composter you can have nutrient-rich fi nished compost in as little as six weeks!
Myth 4: Compost attracts rodents.Fact: Using an enclosed composter is one sure-fi re way to deter vermin. Stick to vegetable scraps and yard waste; placing meat or dairy products in your compost pile will attract rodents, as well as dogs and cats.
Myth 5: Compost smells bad.Fact: Compost has an odor only when it’s too wet or there’s too much nitrogen. The simple techniques outlined in the backyard composting guide on page 10 will keep your compost pile “cooking” properly and prevent odors.
Myth 6: Collecting kitchen scraps is messy.Fact: Place an attractive compost crock on your counter as a convenient way to collect scraps. Biodegradable liners that you can toss right into your compost bin make clean-up a breeze.
Myth 7: It takes a lot of space.Fact: Small-space bins, can take up as little as four square feet!
Myth 8: You must have a place outdoors to set up a bin.Fact: Worm composting, also called vermicomposting, is one way to compost indoors. If worms aren’t your cup of tea, there are electric composters that automatically heat and aerate scraps for effi cient indoor composting.

REASONS YOUR GARBAGE/BLUE BOX WAS LEFT AT THE CURBCheck your garbage and recycling for the ORANGE non-compliance sticker to fi nd out one of the following
reasons why...Recycling• blue box exceeds the 20kg (44lb)
limit• unacceptable materials for
collection were in your blue box, including styrofoam, oil or antifreeze containers, plastic bags, bubble wrap, toys, ceramics, paper towels
• blue boxes are not sorted into separate bins for paper and for containers
• cardboard must be broken down to 2’x2’
Garbage• garbage bags exceed the 20kg (44lb)
limit• unacceptable material for collection,
including hazardous waste, medical waste and bulky items
• garbage loosely placed in garbage can and not in bags
• furniture of any kind is not accepted• broken glass and sharp objects must
be placed in a container/box - not in garbage bags
• garbage bag exceeds the 2 bag limit and does not have a bag tag
Recycling cardboard can be a little tricky - there’s a reason why you should break down, fl atten and tie cardboard into bundles.• Oversized cardboard can’t be collected because it doesn’t fi t into the collection
vehicle’s side bucket. Also boxes that are not broken down cost more money to collect as they take up unnecessary space in the truck
• Recycling trucks don’t compact materials like garbage trucks because materials have to be sorted to make them ready for end markets
• By fl attening and bundling your boxes before they go into the truck, we get more materials into the truck to help control costs and recycle more materials

WHAT CAN I DO WITH ALL THE LEAVES IN MY YARD?
1) Bag them up and put them out on the designated Yard Waste Collection Day (Dutton, Wallacetown, Iona, Iona Station only) - In 2020 the designated dates for this collection are May 25th & November 9th
2) Compost the leaves in your yard - Leaves are a “brown” component to your compost pile (layer with “greens”, see page 10). You can also bag up dry leaves for future use in your compost pile.
3) Mow fall leaves and leave them on the lawn - mowing your leaves chops them up into small pieces that can be left on the lawn. This adds nutrients back into the soil and helps reduce weeds. You should mow regularly so there isn’t a lot of debris sitting on the lawn at one time. You may need to mow over the leaves a few time to get them really chopped up.
4) Chop the leaves up and use them as mulch in your fl ower beds - this reduces weeds, increases moisture retention, adds nutrients as the leaves decompose.
5) Rake leaves into your empty vegetable garden - rake whole leaves into your vegetable garden and leave them there to compost over the season. In the spring, mix them in with your soil. The leaves will help retain moisture in the soil and add nutrients.
Bonus: What do I do about pine needles?Pine needles take longer to decompose than most leaves. You can add them to the compost pile, mix them in with other materials as they are prone to create clumps that don’t allow moisture in and thus don’t decompose. You can also use them as mulch in your existing plant beds. As pine
needles decompose they make the soil more acidic, this is good for plants such as blueberries or azaleas.

KEEP THE HOLIDAYS GREEN!Help create less waste by using these tips:• When shopping use a reusable bag and/or put
purchases in a bag you’re already carrying;• Choose no-to-low packaging gifts, such as

tea towels as wrap for gifts;• Recycle greeting cards by cutting out the images
to make gift tags;• Use brown, or packaging paper and creatively
decorate with drawings or stamps (this paper CAN go in the blue box)
Tree-cycle!From December 26th to January 6th bring your real tree down to the Dutton Dunwich Public Works Garage at 136 Currie Road and leave it near the wood chip pile for it to be recycled into wood chips that can be used around the municipality.
