Overview The RFL GARD 8000 Emulator will simulate a complete GARD Protective Relay and Communications system without the need for an actual GARD chassis. The Emulator will allow the user to pre-configure a system by selecting which RFL Modules are included in the final system, thus allowing for whole chassis configuration to be saved and loaded into an actual GARD chassis. Conversely files saved from an actual GARD chassis can be loaded into the Emulator. The Emulator will familiarize the user with the web driven capabilities of the GARD 8000 System and can be used as a teaching tool in the field. The GARD Emulator will show typical examples of GARD status situations. Note that because this is an emulator there are slight differences in menu options from an actual GARD chassis, also note that when the ‘Save’ button is clicked in configuration mode all configurations are accepted. The Emulator Software is normally loaded into the users PC through a downloaded file from the RFL website at www.rflelect.com. The following sections describe the installation of the software, its operation, and examples of web page configuration. Users should have a copy of the GARD System Instruction Manual for reference; this can also be downloaded from the RFL website.

Manual Configuration of the GARD Chassis As shown on the preceding page the ‘Chassis Configuration Status’ is the ‘Home’ page. This webpage is a pictorial representation of the front and rear of the 3U chassis. The two left columns represent the rear of the 3U chassis, and the right column represents the front of the 3U chassis. The boxes represent simulations of actual module locations. Boxes that have text in them indicate that a module is plugged into that slot. Boxes without text indicate a blank slot. The Chassis Configuration Status screen shows a simulation of a hardware configuration. When connected to a live system the following colors indicate the status of each module:

• Yellow Minor Alarm • Green Module plugged into slot – normal condition • Blue Module not configured or disabled • Red Major Alarm • Gray Empty Slot

The background color of the web page indicates the type of page you are on as follows:

• Light Green Status Page • Light Red Configuration Setting Page • Light Blue Test Page

Typically, the module web pages require information that has to be entered and boxes that have to be checked. Enter the Logic Start Bit in the ‘Start of Logic Range’ box (3 – 506). Each of the 6 Inputs can be named and enabled. ‘Module Enable’ and ‘Module Disable’ will save the settings, however in a real GARD chassis these commands also activate or deactivate the selected I/O modules. Click ‘Save’ to save the settings. Careful consideration must be given when entering logic bit settings. Improper settings will result in a unit that does not operate properly. The pull down menus will give the user a number of choices for settings in the GARD Emulator. Although different in appearance, they all have information that has to be entered and boxes that require checking. Detailed information on the web page displayed can be obtained from the ‘Help’ pull down menu as shown on the following page. It is recommended that users new to the GARD Emulator utilize this resource.

For detailed information on system user interface options please refer to the RFL GARD 8000 System Instruction Manual. This manual can be accessed from the ‘Help’ pull-down menu as shown above. Note that there is a separate instruction manual for the Distance Relay Module; both manuals have the graphics removed because of file space limitations. If you do not have access to a full GARD System Manual, one can be downloaded from the RFL website at www.rflelect.com.
