A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The View From My Chair

Dear Friends,

We have just started the New

Year, and already we are off to a

busy start here at Garden Center

Services. I hope your holidays were

peaceful, and that you were able

to have significant, quality time

with those you are close to. With

some of the unsettling events of

the day, it is so apparent that those

moments we spend expressing and

receiving love are the only true gifts

we require. May the coming

year be filled with many

opportunities for all of

us, especially our consumers, to

experience these gifts.

As you can see, we have kicked

off 2013 with a fresh design for

the Leaflet. Over the past several

months we have worked hard

to develop a new look for our

marketing materials so that we can

put our best foot forward as we

work to share our story with others.

Each element of the new design was

carefully selected to represent the

important work we do. The image

of the tree speaks to our mission

and the amazing growth that takes

place each day here at the agency.

The leaves on the tree and the

vivid modern colors represent each

exceptional consumer, staff, family

member, and friend that is a part of

the Garden Center community.

We are anxious to use our new

design to share our story with

others. If you know of any

individuals or organizations that

may want to learn more about

Garden Center Services, please

forward their information to me and

I will be happy to contact them.

Finally, if you are looking to chase

away the dark days of winter, come

join us on Sunday, January 27th

from 12pm to 4pm at Andersonville

Kitchen and Bath (5038 N. Clark

Street, Chicago) for an Art Exhibit

& Sale benefitting Garden Center.

We will also be hosting our First

Friday event at the Garden Gallery

on Friday, February 1st from 7pm to

9pm. Please join us and enjoy the

beautiful works of art created by

our talented artists.

Nick’s Starry Night

confidential paper shredding

Nicholas (Nick) Harris has attended Garden Center since June

2008. When GCS began the art program in 2009, Nick joined

and never locked back. Nick paints Monday through Friday,

producing amazing artwork that draws attention at every

exhibit. In addition to the Garden Gallery, Nick’s works have

been displayed in several local Starbucks, The Caterpillar

Gallery at Lewis University, and the RR Donnelley building.

Nick’s work will also be featured in an Art Exhibit and Sale

at Andersonville Kitchen & Bath Showroom in Chicago on

January 27th from 12pm to 4pm. In addition, this March,

Nick’s take on van Gogh’s Starry Night, will be featured in

an exhibit of Garden Gallery artist’s work at the Chicago

Flower and Garden Expo at Navy Pier. His work, along with three

other Garden Center artist’s pieces, will be interpreted into flower arrangements by

experts from the American Institute of Floral Designers.

GCS RECYCLING and Confidential Document Shredding collects unwanted cell

phones, laptops, inkjets, toner cartridges and digital cameras from the community

to recycle. We earn money for each approved item we collect. Our recycling team

prepares and packages the items and then ships them to our partner, Think Recycle. As

our recycling credit grows, we receive a check

for our efforts. In addition, GCS Recycling also

performs confidential document shredding at

our Burbank location. Please think of GCS

Recycling for your home and business recycling

and confidential document shredding needs.

Items for recycle can be dropped off at the Burbank or Kedzie day program locations’ recycle boxes.

If you would like to learn more about how you can place a recycling box at your place of business or about our shredding services, contact Anne McFerron at [email protected]

Babeth (Beth) joined the Garden Center family in November 2009. She started as a volunteer teaching

art classes in our day program. As a result of the transformation she saw in the lives of her students,

Beth wanted to become more involved in our programs. She soon came on as an employee and the art

program, as well as the individuals involved in it, continued to flourish. Last year, Beth and Garden Center

opened Garden Gallery & Studio in Tinley Park. Now Beth’s art

students have a comfortable place to create and sell their works.

Beth is a visual artist who works in all mediums with a

specialization in charcoals. She has completed several

commissions for portraits and taught art classes through the

Village of Crestwood. Before finding Garden Center, Beth

volunteered for ten years in the Nathan Hale Grammar School

art program after their arts funding was cut. In 2011, Beth

won the Best New Artist award in the Tinley Park Benches on

the Avenue contest. This June, Beth’s works will be

featured in a solo show at Garden Gallery & Studio.

In July 2009, Garden Center Services started

our first community-based day program. The

group, who named themselves The Community

Crusaders, contribute to their communities

through volunteering in reoccurring projects

including delivering Meals on Wheels, baking

for Ronald McDonald House families, caring for

pets waiting for adoption at the Barker Shop,

sanitizing toys at the Children’s Museum

of Oak Lawn, assisting with

events at Smith

Village Retirement

C o m m u n i t y ,

cleaning stables

at Hanson

Farms, assisting

at Deborah’s

P l a c e

h o m e l e s s

s h e l t e r ,

distributing food at

the Food Circle food pantry and

many more projects for other great charities.

As a result of the popularity of the program, last

year GCS added a second community-based

program. This group, aptly named The Switcheroo

Crew because participants rotate depending on the

activity scheduled, has also begun participating in

the many community projects taken on by The

Community Crusaders. The groups have a great

time while not only making a difference in the

lives of others, but also showing the community

what amazing talents they have to offer.
