Email received 14 Feb Bit of a random question – I’m wondering how you would feel about being nominated to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, which happens in the summer? Volunteers from organisations all over the UK are invited. This is to recognise and say thanks for their great work. Having met you and heard a bit about your training website, and your dedication to customers on the Isle of Wight (and beyond!) I thought it would be great to recognise your hard work with a knees up with The Queen (not actually sure if she will be there). 17 April I thought that you should know that the postman delivered a very posh envelope yesterday. Yes, my invitation to the Buckingham Palace garden party on 21 May. Thank you for nominating me, a country boy in the big city, will I cope ? It will be a two day trip as my last boat back is at 21:05 but it will be an experience I bet.

Over the course of each year, The Queen welcomes over 30,000 guests to spend a relaxed summer afternoon in the beautiful gardens of Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. At each Garden Party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed! Garden Parties are an important way for The Queen to speak to a broad range of people from all walks of life, all of whom have made a positive impact in their community.

We walked through Green Park and arrived at the palace at around 3 PM. There were lots of well dressed folk about all dress up and going to the Garden Party.


Once we had our documents checked we walked into the courtyard then through the palace to behold the palace garden

With an estimated 8,000 people there. The weather was good so let’s enjoy it !

Time to mingle.

The royal party; Her Majesty the Queen, Andrew, Edward, Sophie, William & Kate appeared on the Terrace the band played the National Anthem. The crowd, as one, did the new royal salute, all hands went up with phones attached to grab the first picture. I thought it funny.

The Queen top left, the crowd, perhaps ten deep at times.


The gentlemen with the umbrella used it to suggest that, “you are a little too close, step back".
