Visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/off-leash-parks for more information about the requirements for using an off-leash area.

Boroondara has many great spaces where you can take your dog for a run off the leash.

They are the perfect place to soak in the summer sunshine, enjoy our beautiful parklands and get some exercise. With six off-leash areas in Gardiner Ward alone, you are sure to find one nearby. If you decide to take your dog to the park remember you can help everyone to have a good time by following some simple rules as a responsible dog owner:

§ Always carry a leash with you.

§ Keep your dog in eye sight at all times.

§ Ensure your dog responds immediately to your voice commands.

§ Remember, some people can feel threatened by dogs, even if you think yours is friendly, always keep control of your dog around other people and animals.

§ Always carry a plastic bag with you and pick up after your dog.

Play nicely in off-leash reserve

The Inclusive Clubs project will continue to be rolled out in 2018/19.

Sporting clubs for everyone

A message from your CouncillorDear Neighbour

It has been a busy year and a lot has happened in the last few months in the Gardiner Ward.

This newsletter contains a story on the public housing site at Bills Street, Hawthorn. An open morning was held in September and we are still waiting for the Victorian Government to release detailed plans for the site.

Council remains opposed to the sale of any public land to pay for public housing. We believe the site should remain as public housing. We are especially concerned at this land being sold when part of it was given by the former City of Hawthorn for housing for single women and the remainder sold for housing for the aged. We are disappointed that the generosity of the former City is being used for gain.

The University of Melbourne’s Hawthorn campus is next door to the public housing. The University has declared the land surplus to its needs and has invited tenders for the site. Council has put in a confidential bid for the site with the intention of turning the area into open space.

The land is publicly owned and it would be disappointing if it is sold to a private developer instead of remaining in public hands.

Last month I had the privilege of attending the 60th birthday celebration of the Hawthorn Community Chest. This is an amazing local community charity of residents and business people which has raised money and made a difference to hundreds of local people and families. I would like to thank and congratulate the Chest for all they have done for local families since 1958.

This Christmas I encourage you to shop locally. We are also lucky to have the Boroondara Farmers Market in Auburn Road, Hawthorn. It is a great place to stock up on your Christmas fare and speak to the producer. The Christmas Market will be on 15 December from 8am to1pm.

Finally, for those who have been studying this year, I wish you all the best with your results. To everyone, have a safe and happy festive season.

With best wishes

Coral

As part of the Municipal Wide Heritage Gap Study, the draft Hawthorn East Heritage Gap Study has identified 19 individually significant properties, eight heritage precincts and two heritage precinct extensions for inclusion in the Heritage Overlay.

In mid-2018, all residents in the Hawthorn East locality were invited to provide feedback as part of the preliminary consultation process. Council received a total of 115 submissions.

Council officers have reviewed the feedback and will present a report to the

Urban Planning Special Committee (UPSC) for consideration in the near future. Affected and adjoining property owners/occupiers and anyone who provided feedback will have the opportunity to address the UPSC in support of their feedback.

The UPSC will decide whether to adopt, commence, defer or abandon the draft study.

Update on Hawthorn East Heritage Gap Study

The Department of Health and Human Services recently sought feedback on their updated plans for the Bills Street public housing site in Hawthorn.

Local residents who attended the site walk event on 22 September continued to be very concerned and opposed to the development, especially with the scale and height of the proposed development and the sale of public land to private developers. The residents also asked for clarity in the process and further information on the architectural plan.

Council adopted an Urban Design Framework (UDF) for the site in July 2017 and will review the updated plans against our adopted UDF.

DHHS is planning to conduct further community consultation on the refined concept plan in early 2019.

To keep up-to-date with the project visit www.vhhsba.vic.gov.au/housing-and-infrastructure/bills-street-hawthorn.
