Gross Motor Mathematics Lesson plans are based on literature that is considered to be best practice at the early childhood level. Each plan has links or activities that can be seen through the internet. All Books are on-line and can be viewed by students. Teachers are currently filming 2 lessons from the plan a week, and they are meeting with students to conduct team learning with their students in small groups. The teacher creates a schedule for the families, and they choose the date and time that they would like to meet through Microsoft Teams. Teachers and Para's are collaborating once a week to determine how lessons will be presented. Paraprofessionals are videoing themselves twice a week to conduct one of the activities from the lesson plan or reading the story. Plans are posted online and parents have notified the district if they do not have computers and/or internet access. District has provided both as needed. Majority of parents are sending pictures and or videos daily to teachers to show student work. Social Workers/PIRT are communicating with families on a weekly basis and assisting parents with dealing with challenging behaviors and means to keep students motivated and engaged. Daily surveys through forms are posted to ensure parents are able to access the lesson plans, to answer any additional questions or concerns that need to be addressed with the classroom teacher or administration, and a daily question as to whether or not the family needs to be contacted by the school social worker each day. SPECIAL EDUCATION K-12 All lessons and activities planned during Remote Learning Days will provide the appropriate modifications for students in accordance with an IEP. Live lessons / recorded video lessons are provided at a minimum of three times per week by all teachers. Co-Teachers provide small group lessons for students with IEP;s and any other students require support. Self-contained teachers provide a minimum of three live/video recorded lessons per week in all content areas. SC and Co-Teachers are providing notes, tutorials, charts, graphs, and other appropriate visuals to support instruction. Autism Teachers meet with students live daily and also doing whole group lessons and small group lessons. MD Teachers are meeting live with students 3 times per week and meeting with students individually when needed. . Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy and Counseling are being provided , however, services are provided by approximately one half of the services outlined in the IEP due to the remote learning schedule. IEP meetings are going on consistently through Teams meetings, including our teachers, Child Study team, and

parents, to be compliant with state and federal mandates and continue to develop and modify student IEP’s as

needed.

All annual review meetings are being held via Microsoft Teams with all teaching staff, case manager, related service providers and parents. ELL K-12 To meet the needs of English Language Learners, every effort is made to provide equity during Remote Learning.

Lesson plans are created for ESL/High Intensity/Spanish Bilingual programs. Lessons are delivered via Microsoft

Teams. Assignments were modified according to student's proficiency level. ELLs are given access to devices

through district’s 1-1 initiative. The district made provisions for ELL families who do not have Internet access.

Teachers are using educational software that is specific to the needs of ELL students: BrainPOP ELL, National

Geographic, ESL at Home, Flip grid app to facilitate video discussions, IXL, Read Works, Newsela.

To build stronger connections with ELL families, we used multiple means of communication: Talking Points app,

which translates messages in different languages; utilized district and community members who speak a foreign

language to place phone calls and/or email in a language that parents understand; teacher-created websites with

step-by-step directions on how to access Remote Learning materials. District Remote Learning materials were

translated into Albanian, Polish, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

ESL and Bilingual teachers deliver online ESL, High Intensity, Spanish Bilingual Math, and Spanish Bilingual ELA lessons via Teams. They must reach the families of ELL students, making sure that the students are safe, explaining step-by-step how to navigate teacher’s/school’s website, complete and submit assignments, access technology. With the understanding that it takes ELLs much longer to complete assignments that the native speakers, teachers provided appropriate accommodations: allowing extra time, using simplified format, grading on content, not grammar & spelling, providing flexibility in turning in completed work.

Differentiation of instruction: lessons are student driven, they address all learning styles and multiple intelligences, and allow students to use their specific learning style or skills to meet the common goal of becoming English proficient.

Modification of assignments to reflect student’s proficiency levels:

Example, student at the beginning level of proficiency will listen to the article and read along, draw character details. Students on the intermediate level of proficiency will write a sentence for each paragraph. More advanced student will create an outline or a power point.

Teachers use virtual opportunities to connect curriculum and concepts to students’ personal and cultural experiences, encourage ELLs to submit assignments in multiple languages, use translation tools to provide positive feedback and emotional support to students in these trying times.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

• K-5 Attendance is determined by daily participation in completion of assignments • 6-12 Attendance is determined by daily student check-in with teachers and completion of assignments • Attendance issues will be factored in on an individual basis regarding promotion, retention, graduation in collaboration with school admin., teachers, counselors, nurse and case workers. • Staff members are working with families that struggle with remote learning attendance by offering counseling and resources. • Attendance Officers are notified of students who have not participated in the last 3 days. • School Resource Officers will make wellness checks on students who have not participated after one week by visiting the home to verify residency and alert school officials of any problems.

Transportation South Bergen Jointure contracts all transportation for out of district students and they have already reached out to the bus companies to cease bussing. Related Service Providers -Provides are reaching out to the families on their caseloads based on the related service requirements outlined in the IEP to support the families during this time. Speech Therapists, Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists are providing packets to the families to work on some services at home and they are being emailed to the parents. -Compensatory services will be scheduled with all related service providers upon our return to school. Possibly the last week of June after the completion of school. Out of District Schools -The Out of District Schools that serve some of the more severe Garfield Students have remote learning plans that they have emailed or mailed to the district to support the students that they serve. -The case managers are in communication with the out of district schools as they have IEP meetings that will be held and are being held and are following up to ensure that the remote learning plans that they have implemented are working for the children. -Case Managers also asked to have out of district schools send summary of their remote learning plan to the Director. TECHNOLOGY Students in grades 4-12 received laptops as part of the one to one initiative that began in the 2019-2020 school year. Chromebooks were distributed to families of students in grades K-3 to prepare for online lessons beginning on April 21, 2020. The Garfield School District is prepared to provide technical assistance and resolve any technical concerns including issues with district laptops, passwords, etc. Accommodations will be made in order to avoid any disruptions to the remote learning process. Parents and students should contact the technology Director at [email protected] and/or call 973-340-5010, ext. 2232 . The technology helpdesk link located on the district is another way to contact the tech department. All issues will be addressed as quickly as possible. The department also continues to provide professional development for staff , students, and families in regards to using the Teams platform as well as developing computer skills. INTERNET ACCESS Teachers checked with all students to identify families that did not have internet access.
