DEL IGHTS FOR YOUR F IVE SENSES

Shopping for fi ne clothing and

    accessories should be about more

than simply making a purchase. At

    Garmany, weve created an atmo-

sphere that is all about making you

feel great. We make it our mission

to appealquite literallyto all fi ve

    of your senses. For example:

The fi rst thing you notice when you walk in the door is the entic-

ing smell of our favorite cologne,

    Laurentino.

Next you hear music. We think life should have a great soundtrack, so our personal selections are always playing for you throughout the store. The tunes are upbeat and ener-

geticit sounds like a party and makes you want to join in.

You will also notice that your sense of sight is tantalized everywhere you look. We treat ev-ery corner of our store as though it were a window display, with drama, color, style and verve.

Plus, we always have a seasonal exhibit of notable art from a local gallery. We can modestly

say that you wont see merchandise displayed to better effect at any other store, anywhere.

Perhaps youre craving a taste of something delicious to drink? Let us offer you an espresso or cappuccino, a glass of champagne, a Scotch on the rocks or a mineral wa-

terits all on hand to refresh and delight you as you shop or just relax.

And then theres the sense of touchthe marvelous feeling you get as you slip on a cashmere jacket or a silk dress or a superfi ne wool suit.

These are all essential parts of what we call the Garmany Experiencealong with free

shoe shines, free parking, a movie theater for the kids, gift wrapping and much more.

And fi nally, there are two aspects of which we are especially proud:

Our staff is helpful, personable, highly knowledgeable about the ins and outs of dressing well and expert in the brands we carry. Youll receive exactly the amount of attention youre

looking for. You can browse by yourself or in the company of a sales associate. If youre in

a hurry, you can shop by appointment; well even pre-select looks for you and have them

    waiting when you arrive.

The garments you choose will be altered by skilled master tailors for a truly customized fi t.In short, our pledge is to make you look terrifi c as well as feel good.

We wish you a spring of joy and renewal, and we look forward to seeing you soon in

    our Red Bank store.

ART at GarmanyGarmany has a long-held tradition of stocking our store with wearable pieces of art, but three years ago, we intro-duced more conventional art to our offerings. This spring, windows and store displays will feature the oil paintings of local artist Joyce Anastasia Urbanski.

Through May 31, her Portraits series will provide an extra layer of aesthetic pleasure to the Garmany shop-ping experience. The series features large-scale works that capture women in moments of quiet contemplation. She depicts her subjects and the bits of nature around them with loose brush strokes and bright, vibrant colors that mimic the palettes and textures of some of the best spring and summer looks.

Fan FareEvery spring brings the long-awaited start of

the MLB season, but opening day also brings

a less welcome phenomenon: bleachers filled

with fans sporting their lucky, grungy, over-

    sized jerseys and t-shirts.

Red Jacket clothing designs for that

    all-too-rare breed: the fashion-conscious

sports enthusiast. Vintage logos on their

screen-printed t-shirts recall the best parts of

eras past. The all-cotton garments are heav-

ily pre-washed, giving them a softness and

durabilitymeaning theyll last through years of

post-season play, even if your team doesnt.

Etro A-Go-GoIts a family affair at Etro, where Veronica Etro

whips up the womens line and her brother, Kean, is in charge of the mens. Both designers draw heavily on the companys expertise in fabrics (Etro got its start

in the Sixties as a textile house) when putting together their luxe separates and

colorful sportswear. For spring/summer, Kean offers up

witty-yet-wearable jackets and pants done in dapper plaids and blue-and-gray stripes, with a hot-colored tropical prints option for those who want it. The womens collection is right on-trend with a blush-hued palette, but it still features Etro signatures like lounge-y silk separates and bohemian dresses.

Of course, it wouldnt be Etro without at least a few exotic prints, and this sea-sons no different. Theres a silk that looks like the wings of a monarch butterfl y, a swirling, turquoise-accent paisley and an oversized fl oral with salmon-pink blos-soms. Even within this kaleidoscope of color, the fi nished lookfor men as well as womenis still classic and effortlessly cool.

Vivek Nagrani has no doubt given more thought to mens underwear than most of its wearers ever have. He made his name as the creator of V.K. Negrani mens hosiery, woven of the fi nest cotton by small fac-tories, in bold, striking designsand, by all accounts, addictive to men whove tried them. Now check out his thinking-outside-the-brief new styles of mens underwear: Theres the Woody, a hyper-constructed boxer brief that works well with trim-fi tted trousers. Its made of Peruvian Pima with lycra, as is the Johnson, an easy-fi t trunq that offers medium support. Last and, in a way, least, is the Willy, a tailored trim-fi t model of 100% Peruvian Pima for the man who enjoys total freedom, according to Nagrani. Next time youre in the store, stop by the accessories department to consider an underwear upgrade.

    WHAT LIES BENEATH

Trunk shows are a vestige of the early days of apparel re-tailing, when manufacturers representatives would visit stores with trunks full of the latest fashions, and store owners would choose the items that best suited their customers. Nowadays, we go straight to designers show-rooms in Milan, Naples, New York and elsewhere to se-lect merchandise for each season. But the trunk show lives ongiving you the opportunity to see and purchase items from a designers entire line. Here are some of the trunk shows coming up at Garmany.

SANTANDREAS uncommon threadsThe Santandrea brand is the result of a happy union between the venerated Trabaldo Togna textile mill and Sartoria Saintandrews, a fi rm noted for the skill of its 165 tailors. Trabaldo Togna textile chief Luca Tabaldo Togna bought the smaller fi rm three years ago and rechris-tened it Santandrea.

Now customers of select establish-ments can experience top-of-the line menswear produced under Trabaldo Tognas supervision and made with its exclusive fi ne and super-fi ne fabrics (even the most avid fashion afi cionados say theyve never felt anything like them). These are clothes created byand forpeople for whom fi ne clothing is a pas-sion. It is a great thing to take the time to look after your style and your wardrobe, which are important to our well-being, says Luca Trabaldo Togna.

At Garmany, customers can have either ready-to-wear or made-to-measure items. The delights of made-to-measure are, of course, manifold: choosing among fabrics and design details, having a piece created to fi t you with maximum comfort and style. With Santandrea, theres an unexpected pleasure as well: Unlike with most brands, there is no additional charge for a made-to-measure or custom order.

Craving Crab Perfection?Theres an appetizer for thatIts been called the worlds best crab cake: the pretzel-crusted version offered by chef/artist/entrepreneur David Burke at Fromagerie in Rumson. Served with poppy-seed honey and pineapple coleslaw, the dish beautifully combines spicy, salty, sour and sweet fl avors, with a bit of crunch to boot. And of course, it looks beautifulafter all, Mr. Burke is a man who knows quite a bit about presentation. Here, exclusively for GARMANY readers, he shares the brilliantly simple recipe for the ultimate crab cake.

DAVID BURKES PRETZEL-CRUSTED CRAB CAKE Ingredients:

Heat the oil in a small saut pan over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and saut the vegetables for about four minutes, or until they are soft and translucent. Re-move them from the heat and drain off and discard the excess oil. Set aside.

Combine the butter and mayonnaise in a large mixing bowl. Using a hand-held elec-tric mixer or a wooden spoon, beat until the mixture is well blended and very smooth. Fold in the crabmeat, chives, lemon zest, Old Bay and cayenne along with the reserved onions and celery. Cover and refrigerate the crab cake mixture for 15 minutes to chill slightly.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.Remove the crab cake mixture from the refrigerator. Line one row of Pretz (about six

pretzels) closely together and top with about cup of crab mixture. Line the top with the same amount of pretzels (creating a raft). Dip the open sides of the crab cake in egg white and then the rice pearls to coat the sides. Place the pretzel-coated cakes on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes, or until the cakes are fi rm.

Heat the clarifi ed butter in a large saut pan over medium heat until it begins to smoke. In batches, using additional butter as needed, fry the crab cakes for about 3 min-utes per side, or until they are golden brown. Place them on paper towels to drain.

Place the crab cakes on a serving platter.

1 tbsp. peanut oil cup fi nely diced onion cup fi nely diced celery 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup mayonnaise 2 lbs. lump crabmeat, picked clean of all shell and cartilage 3 tbsp. minced fresh chives

1 tbsp. freshly grated lemon zest 2 tsp. Old Bay seasoning Pinch of cayenne pepper 1 box Pretz pretzel sticks (can be purchased in Japanese gourmet stores) 2 egg whites cup rice pearls Approx. 1 cup clarifi ed butter

The Crme de la ClosetAs houses and wardrobes grow, so do the options for organizing

closets. The latest innovation in clothing storage is the Virtuoso

line from California Closets, available for now only in select mar-ketsMonmouth County, fortunately, among them.

Whats different? Well, Virtuoso is a horizontal closet design concept, with a minimum of vertical lines to break your view as you gaze at the contents of your walk-in. Its made from your choice of a line of materials from Italy called Lago, which comes in a range of colors and is certifi ed as green in Europe.

And why not have a beautiful and low-chemical closet? After all, you spend time in there every day, Eric Nili, manager of California Closets in Cranbury, points out. People spend seri-ous time and money on their wardrobes. They dont want them housed in some bare-bones closet the builder put up. A well-organized closet has other benefi ts as well. Some people fi nd items of clothing they havent seen in years and are so happy to have them back, Nili reports. Others say, Thanks for giving me more room. Now I can go shopping! For more information on closet options, call California Closets at 1-800-229-2567.

Exploring The Feminine FACTORFans of the Philosphy di Alberta Ferretti line include hot young Hollywood types like Ali Larter, Emmy Rossum and January Jones. They, like so many women, show off to best ad-vantage in the type of gauzy, fl oat-y, intricately detailed cocktail dress for which Philosophy is best known. The romantic and fun spring collection is highlighted by whimsical prints of eyes, butterfl ies and lips.

Its been called the type of clothing a woman wears when she wants to feel like a goddess. Ferretti herself refuses to typecast the line, saying enig-matically that the name Philosophy indicates only something that cannot be imposed. Decide for yourself when you visit the Philosophy selection in Garmanys womens department.

Incotex, maker of luxurious mens trousers, is an Italy-based line thats focused squarely on the American market. To start, the customer in the U.S. has a different body than the one in Europe or Asiagenerally bigger and taller. We had to completely change the trouser pattern to make it comfortable for our U.S. customer, says Emilio Paschetto, director of sales for North America for Incotex parent company Slowear. Even the fabrics

we use are differentsofter and lighter. Those fabrics include pin corduroys, exclusive lightweight wools and ice gabardine.

For all their focus on materials and fi t, Incotex pants dont neglect style. We try to be brave and not be boring with cotton, so we offer fancy colors like pink, light green, French blue, violet and burgundy, Paschetto says. Often its the brightest colors that sell the best, because this is what our customers wantthey already have lots of our trousers in stone and khaki.

And whos buying these light, bright and super-comfortable pants? Our starting client is maybe around 28, moving up in the world, says Paschetto. Or our customer could be 65, with a healthy life, very active. All our customers tend to be cultured and well-trav-eled. Whatever the age, Paschetto maintains, once hes buying us, he doesnt go back to other lines. Try the spring line for yourself and

look for the new Incotex shop at Garmany.

GLOBE-TROTTING GOURMETSummer is the season for fi ery Southwestern fare and premium tequila, both specialties of The Copper Canyon restaurant at 51 First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands. Our tequila tasting events really get rolling this time of year, says chef and owner Michael Krikorian. Each month, agave fi ends converge on the restaurant to work their way through six to 10 pairings, such as a sparkling silver tequila with a salty, crunchy taquito, or a smooth Aejo with notes of cognac accompanied by something sweet.

Krikorian, who loves to inject tastes of other cultures into his traditional Tex-Mex plates (think brie topped with a tomato salsa and served with tortillas) is also branching out with a new sister restaurant this summer. It has the same small-plates concept, but were featuring globally eclectic cuisine, he says of the spot, located a stones throw from the Copper Canyon. Many of the dishes take their inspiration from foods sold by street vendors in other countries around the world. Whether youre in the mood for a tequila fi esta or the taste of a new culture, Chef Krikorian has got you covered.

Bodacious BLUItalian fashion house Blumarine is for women who

want to put a sparkle in their stepliterally, as

sequins make their way into nearly every

    collection. For spring/summer, the embel-

lishments appear on the necklines of

breezy tie-dye dresses that would look

right at home at a yacht party in the

Mediterranean (no surprise, as the line was

founded by designer Anna Molinari on the

    island of Capri).

    Molinari knows her customers will

always be the life of the party, so she prepares

them this season with fl irty dresses in

sherbet shades of lemon, tangerine and icy

pink. She also offers separates with safari

touches, like a camoufl age cropped cardi

and khaki cargos with a golden sheen.

Over at Blugirl, the juniors line, there

are plenty more party pieces, including

a pink cocktail dress in the brands

signature leopard print and a mini-

skirt covered in blooming red poppies.

Suffi ce it to say, the woman lucky enough

to slip into these confections is no wallfl ower.

The Art of the Bow TieOnce the domain of the geek and the oldster, the bow tie is backon the runway, in the offi ce and on the street. Garmany carries an extensive selection from top makers. Remem-ber: The key to bow-tie cool is to tie it yourself. You can do it! Heres how:

    1. Slide the tie under your collar. Allow one end of the tie to hang about two inches lower than the other end.

    2. Bring the longer end across the shorter end.

3, Pass the longer end under the shorter end and upward, forming the fi rst part of the knot. Pull tight to the shirt collar.

    4. Form the front loop of the bow by doubling up the shorter, hanging end and placing it across the collar points.

    5. Hold the front loop between your index fi nger and thumb. Drop the long end down over the front loop.

    6. Pass the hanging end under the front loop. Use your index fi nger to bend the end in the middle (at the widest part), and poke your fi nger through the open part of the knot. Now you have formed the back loop of the bow.

    7. Gently pull the bow at both folded ends to tighten the knot. Hint: This is exactly the same knot most people use to tie a shoelace.

    8. Adjust to taste. Smooth bow or dimpled? Loose or tight? You dont want to be too precise; perfectly imperfect is the look youre going for.

    Elements of MENS STYLE

... in which JOHNELL GARMANY saves us from embarrassing ourselves

Whats the best-looking thing a man can wear?

A suit, hands-down. It highlights any mans best physical assets

    and camoufl ages imperfections.

People like to say the suit hasnt changed in 100 years, but

thats a massive exaggeration. If I put on a suit from just

10 years ago, I look like a dweeb. Whats changed

    recently?

The cut has changed a lot. Todays suit jacket has natural

shoulders with little padding, a narrower shoulder, high

arm holes, a higher button stance, more suppression

at the waist and a shorter jacket length than a suit from

a few years ago. Pants have a slimmer leg and

tend to be worn shorter. This lookthe so-called

modern suithas a more dynamic silhouette

that makes any man look slimmer.

So that explains why my older suits look

so, well, old. What are the style trends in

    warm-weather suits and sportcoats?

Lighter construction, for one. Half-lined and

even unlined jackets are being produced by

top makers for the hot months. Lightweight

    natural fabricslinen, cotton and silkare

big this season. Patch pockets are popular on

sportcoats and even suit jackets. There have

even been sightings of younger men wearing

double-breasted suitsnot the boxy 1930s style,

but a contemporary, fi tted Italian cut.

    How about casual clotheswhats in?

Colorful, patterned button-front shirts are huge. These

party shirts are highly versatile: They can be worn

with shorts, jeans, a sportcoat or even a suit. Graphic

t-shirts are big; dark blue jeans with

    minimal distressing; chunky, funky belts;

    sneakers with style interest, especially

    retro designs; aviator sunglasses. Spring

    outerwear piecesespecially vestsare

very popular. Theyre worn for cool,

    not for warmth.

Speaking of warmth, whats up with all the sweaters I see

paired with warm-weather sportcoats and suits in the new

collections? Wouldnt a sweater make a guy too warm?

Well, you wouldnt wear a sweater on a hot summer day. But on a

spring day or a cool summer night, a lightweight sweater wont make

you boil over. Visually, it has the effect of making a suit or sportcoat

    more casual.

Whats going on with rolled-up trousers?

Youre talking not about cuffed bottoms, but pants worn with the bot-

tom rolled up. It works with a casual look and only with slim-legged

    pants.

And the idea is to show your ankles?

A little bit, yes. The two trends in ankle wear now are colorful

socks, like the ones we carry from makers such as Paul Smith

and V.K. Nagrani, and to go sock-less.

You mentioned colorful party shirts. So let me ask

youto tuck or not to tuck?

Tucking is back. The untucked shirt has had almost a decade

of glory, and the pendulum has defi nitely swung. My father,

Larry, is cheering; he never cared for the untucked look.

I fi nd my shirts come untucked on their own and bunch

around my middle. Under a suit jacket, it looks like Im

    carrying extra pounds. Any remedy?

Thats an easy one: Buy custom shirts. Trimmer guys, in par-

ticular, benefi t from a custom fi t. Not only will you eliminate

excess fabric, but the shirt also will stay perfectly tucked.

    Are pocket squares still in?

Totally. And they give you so many options, from the Mad Men

look of a straight-fold, pure white cotton handkerchief to a brightly

colored, patterned silk square, which can substitute for

a necktie to dress up a sportcoat. This season, the

    more colorful, the better.

Is it OK to wear a linen pocket square with a

tuxedo? It seems less formal than silk.

True, linen is less formal, but it is absolutely

correct with a tuxedo. The same goes for cot-

ton. A linen pocket square is also functional.

You could, for example, prove that chivalry isnt

dead by offering your linen hank to a tearful

woman. You couldnt do that with silk.

    I like to wear a wrinkle-free suit with a

sharp crease in the pants. Is it OK to dry-

clean my favorite suit once a week?

No. Dont confuse pressing with dry-cleaning.

A suit needs dry-cleaning only three or four times a

seasonits hard on the fabric, and done too often,

will reduce the life of a suit. But you can press a suit

before every wearing, if you like. Find a dry-cleaner

that offers pressing only. Alternatively, you can buy a

home trousers press or simply touch up the suit with

a hot iron. If the fabric is fi ne, such as a wool gabardine, protect it by using a

pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.

    THE LOOK FORSPRING & SUMMER

School SpiritKnee socks, preppy stripes and

    academic blazers turned spring

    2010 runways into pep rallies.

    Ralph Laurens classic crested

    blazer, penny-loafers from Robert Zur

and Tory Burchs perforated leather skirt

    are seemingly school-inspired sepa-

ratesat least, the schooldays we wish

wed had. Schoolgirl chic uniforms are

turning up in soft grays and neutral

    tones; strategically placed pleats

and folds give garments shape and

    movement. Never mind Septem-

    berdesigners find these playful

    looks right for any season.

Peek-A-BooThis season, designers incorporate cutouts, high slits, mesh and lace to give fl irtatious, sexy peeks of skin.

Long slit skirts and dresses in sheer, fl owing fabrics provide a not-so-subtle hint of leg, while corsets and slips

are turning underwear-as-outerwear into a trend. A Schumacher silk mini-dress with a deep v-neck and arful draping

shows off the fi gure without showing it all. Roberto Cavalli and Ports 1961 models fl ounced down the runway wear-

ing sheer, nude-colored evening dresses, while other designers chose even more suggestive looksplacing bras

over blouses. Unleash your summer sultriness with a fl irty outfi t that only hints at what lies beneath.

Tribal DreamsTribal worlds engage the creativity of de-

    signers, bringing ancient civilizations and

their environments to life in fresh styles

and printsoften inspired by batik or

ikatfor spring. Look to Etro and

Blugirl for bold tribal and ethnic

prints, and Blumarine for classic camou-

flage. Escada shows a sexy zebra-print in

a blouse or dress, while Moschino Cheap

and Chic offers animal prints re-imagined

in turquoise and gray. Tribal and animal

prints have also inspired all kinds of ac-

cessories from head to toe this season,

such as a Magaschoni leopard-print scarf.

MetallicWhether embellishing heels, woven into an

evening gown or tied to a handbag,

a little glitter always does a girl good.

Designers are calling for you to punch

up your wardrobe this season with some shim-

mer and shine. Robert Grahams scoop-neck

tank has rivet details around the neckline, for

instance, and Schumacher is showing a so-

phisticated gold sequin bodice dress. You can

also tap into the trend in a garment with just a

dusting of sequins, or wear metallic acces-

sories. Add some gleaming color with a sexy

    Ports 1961 shimmering pink mini-dress or a

blue sequined one-shoulder dress by Blugirl.

    Womens FASHION

    Show Sheer Confi dence

Sheer fabrics are cool for spring

and summer, in both senses of

the word. Yes, theyre sexy, but in

an elegant way, and they provide

    flattering and feminine draping.

    Airy gauzes and flowing chiffons

add no bulk to a look, even when

a piece has ruffles, like Escadas

    multicolor sheer short-sleeve print

shirt with a ruffle neck. Sheer is

    everywhere this season, in jacket

    sleeves, pretty printed scarves,

    cutout panels in evening dresses

and more. Check out Etros gor-

    geous sheer paisley blouse and

    scarves or Blumarines sheer

    floral-print tunic. You may

choose to wear a lacy bra

    or tube top underneath.

    You also have the option

of a camisole in a color

    thats close to your skin

tone or to the color of the

    top.

No color enhances a tanned complexion better

than white. This classic neutral color is a spring/

summer staple, of course, but this season, design-

ers sent models down the runway dressed purely

in white. A Badgley Mischka pants suit, a ruffled

white frock from Collette Dinnigan or a Roberto

Cavalli evening gown give you this seasons

achromatic look. Try creating a stylish outfit

    by layering white separates a

    you like, add a pop

    of color with a bright

    handbag from Raf or

    Mulberry.

Neutral-toned shoes are a must this

season, from cage shoes to perfo-

    rated-effect sandals. They go with

everything you own, plus they help

    make your legs look wonderfully

    long. Platform pumps, like those

    from Tory Burch, are especially

    hot, as are patent leather

    peep-toe pumps from Stuart

    Weitzman. Choose a nude

    shade thats a close match

    to your skin tone,

    and wear your new

    shoes barelegged

Established in 1996, the James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery was founded upon and remains loyal to its vision: to represent fine art for arts sake and to curate gallery collections and thoughtfully present art with an artists eye and understanding. Gallery owner James Yarosh draws upon his knowledge developed as an artist and published interior design devotee, in addition to his industry experience and variety of solid relationships with international artists developed since 1985, to offer complete fine art services for residential and corporate projects. He provides at-location consultations to give clients guidance with framing, placing, and displaying original fine art.

James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery has received critical acclaim on a national level for presenting Russian fine art collections and recognizing significant art movements early on, as well as for representing original works created by New York City and New Jersey regional artists. James provides collectors, interior designers, and trade clients with fine art selections appropriate to a multitude of tastes and interests. In addition, James exhibits the solo public art installations at Garmany in Red Bank, New Jersey and a custom and decorative line of art available through the Frame of Mind Gallery in Holmdel, New Jersey. He also presides as a judge for the annual Bayonet Farm Art and Music Festivals plein air competitions in Holmdel, New Jersey; in 2009, he shared the role with his invited guest, Peter Trippi, editor of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine. Yarosh participates in various charity designer show houses, including Kips Bay, New York and Cape May, Twin Maples,

and Stately Homes by the Sea, New Jersey, leading to publication in New York Spaces magazine and multiple design features in Design NJ magazine, amongst others.

James has proudly achieved In Circle status for the gallery, with bronze level contributions for supporting the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center. To satisfy his passion for art and to extend his art education and experience, James travels extensively throughout Europe on a regular basis, studying art in well-known museums. James has also recently appeared on HGTV and was featured in the winter, 2008 national edition of the Art and Antiques Collectors Sourcebook in an eight page article titled Imperial Eye, written about Yaroshs fine art collection and his involvement with notable Soviet-era and Russian art personally collected as well as offered to his clients through his New Jersey gallery.

All of the above services and presentations illustrate the essential benefits of recognizing and incorporating fine art in the home as part of the everyday living experience.

James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery, located at 55 East Main Street in Holmdel, is open Saturday, 12 to 4 p.m. and by appointment weekdays and evenings. For further information, please contact James at732.993.5ART or 732.993.5278 or visit the gallerys website at www.jamesyarosh.com, where guests are welcome to register for e-card gallery show announcements, inquire about appointments to visit the gallery, and schedule in-home consultations.

  • So, the brand is Robert Graham, but

    youre Robert Stock?

People call me Mr. Graham all the timeIm used it!

I founded the company in 2001 with an English textile

designer whose fi rst name was Graham, so thats

    where the name comes from.

Tell us how you got your start in fashion.

My father was my inspiration. He owned a gas station,

so he would work all day and come home with dirty

clothes, hands covered in oil. But he would go into

his room, wash up, change and emerge this different

person. I was amazed by the transformative power of

clothing. He had all his shirts custom-made at a shop

on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, and I loved

    looking at those shirts and

    studying the patterns.

    Youve been designing

    for more than 40

    years and helped

    launch the Chaps

    line with Ralph

    Lauren. Why did you

    start your own line?

    I saw a real need.

    Most companies

    have a generic shirt

    pattern, and then

    maybe theyll make

it different by having it in a stripe or a check. But no

one was taking it to the next level.

So what takes a Robert Graham shirt to

    the next level?

We design all of our own fabricsevery pattern,

every colorway, every trim. Basically, all the ingredi-

ents are exclusive to us from the start. Then we add

in little extras our customers love to discover, like em-

broidery inside the neckband or trim under the cuff.

Weve taken the shirt and made it into an art form.

What types of customers are drawn to your

    designs?

Theyre individuals. They like feeling comfortable in

what they wear, and our clothes fi t well. Also, our

customers know we never do the

same thing twice, so when they

come back next season there will

    be something new.

You also have a womens line

    and recently expanded into

    dress shirts, ties and acces-

    sories. Was that in response

    to customer requests?

    Yes. We consider Robert Graham

to be more of a lifestyle than a

brand. It made sense to expand

but we wouldnt have done it if

we didnt think we could bring

    something new to the market.

The fi rst thing our customers do

when they see one of our pieces

is study it closely to fi nd the little

points of differentiation. Its like a

treasure hunt; they go looking for

    that golden nugget that makes

the piece special. So we bring that to the new

categories, too. If its a hat, its going to be silk

instead of just cotton, and maybe it has three or

four silks pieced together, not just one.

Is it part of the treasure hunt to

    embroider your credo, Knowledge

    Wisdom Truth, somewhere on each

    of your garments?

We came up with that in beginning

because its how we try to live

our lives. And the saying means

    something different to everyone,

just like each of our designs

    is unique and makes each

    person happy for a different

reason. I like to say we

    dont sell clothing; we sell

    happiness. You put on our

clothes and you get a good

    feeling. Theres nothing better!

came out just after he made it

A rare villainous role for him,

    it helped cement his sophisti-

    cated, sexy image.

Ask the women in your life about Sean Connery, and odds are

theyll confirm that they find him irresistible. The man who

uttered the unforgettable line, The name is Bond James

Bond (in 1962s Dr. No) was voted Sexiest Man of the Century

by People magazine in 1999. Recently, at age 79, the actor

scored 90 percent in Woman Magnetism in an online poll.

Whats Sean Connerys secret? At least to some degree,

he is proof that clothes do make the man, and that urbanity

can be acquired. A foul-mouthed ex-milkman and Mr. Universe

finalist from Edinburgh, Connery was an unlikely choice for

    the role of Bond. Producer

    Harry Saltzman claimed he

    chose Connery for the role

    after watching him walk

    down the street. But not

    only did Ian Fleming him-

    self have doubtshe called

    Connery a Glaswegian

    truck driverso did Dr.

    No director Terence Young,

    who schooled Connery in

    the ways of the well-bred.

    Young reputedly made Con-

nery wear a suit around the

    clockeven to bedto get

    used to the feel.

And get used to it he

    did. Connery exuded style

    whether sipping a martini

    or facing imminent death

    by laser beam. He looks

utterly at ease in the sleek

    gray suit (narrow notched

    lapels, angled slit pock-

ets) he wore in Dr. No, the

    seven-stripe glen plaid he

donned in From Russia with Love, the three-piece (complete

with lapelled waistcoat) made famous in Goldfinger. So com-

fortable has he become with fashion that this spring, for the

eighth year in a row, he hosts the Dressed to Kilt New York

fashion show, created to highlight Scottish designers. And

Louis Vuitton chose him as a style icon for the brands ongoing

    Core Values campaign.

In the end, its not just what Connery wears, but the way

he wears it that makes him the emblem of innate cool. Here is

a man with presence. From his 007 days to The Hunt for Red

    October, in roles ranging

    from Indiana Jones father

    to a reclusive professor (in

    Finding Forrester), he strikes

    the perfect balance of sua-

    vity and swagger, charm and

    confidence. His shoulders

    stay squared, his arms are

    held slightly away from his

    body, his stance is relaxed.

    And as Bond, he exempli-

fies the dark triad of traits

    study-proven to get the girl:

    narcissism, a penchant for

    thrill-seeking and an easy

    comfort with deceit.

    Assuming that in real

    life, ConnerySir Sean since

    2000is no more egotistical

    or deceitful than your aver-

age bloke, how then can we

    sum up his enduring appeal?

    Venerable film critic Pauline

Kael seems to have nailed it:

    Women want to meet him,

and men want to be him.

    SEAN CONNERY

Connery is proof that clothes do make the man, and that urbanity can be acquired.

    GET YOUR IRISH UP

    | BY M A R K D O W D E N

Beautifully balanced and complex beyond reason, Redbreast is proof that the best Irish

whiskey is among the best whiskey anywhere

ALTHOUGH THE IRISH ARE SAID to have invented whiskey,

their product gets little attention in a world of connoisseur-

ship that revolves around Scotch. Its a pityand surely

bound to changebecause Irish whiskey is enjoying a

renaissance. Forget any preconceptions about Irish be-

ing best used to fl avor coffee. Thats a fi ne use for

Jameson, but it would be a waste to mix Red-

breast, Green Spot or Black Bush with any-

    thing other than soft water.

    The commercial history of Irish

whiskey follows a curious arc. In

the late 19th and early 20th centu-

ries, Irish outsold Scotch around the

globe. Then the industry was hit by

    the double-whammy of Prohibition in

    the United States and independence

from the United Kingdom. The break

from the U.K. meant that the far-

fl ung Empire market for Irish whiskey

dried up completely and swung over

    to Scotch. Irish production crashed

    and never recovered.

By the 1960s, only three distill-

eries remained in Ireland. They were

    Jameson, Powers and Cork Distill-

ers, which banded for survival into

the Irish Distillers Group. In 1972,

    Bushmills in Northern Ireland joined

the IDG. The members bought into

the strategy of making a product as

unlike Scotch as possible, and so

all Irish whiskey for a time was un-

    peated, triple-distilled (Scotch is dis-

Redbreast is a pure pot still spirit, the most traditional style of Irish whiskey. Its

distinctive flavor profile is reminiscent of the best Speyside Scotch.

tilled twice), smooth and, many Scotch lovers

    would say, bland by comparison.

The IDG closed its three historic distilleries

and in 1975 opened the New Midleton Distillery

in County Cork. Thus there came to be a single

licensed distillery, albeit a massive one, in all of

the republic, plus Old Bushmills in the North.

Today the Midleton facility is owned by Pernod

Ricard (yes, the French control most Irish whis-

key), while Old Bushmills is owned by the other

global beverage giant, Diageo. A third player,

    Cooley Distillery, opened in 1987independent

and Irish-owned, by God! In addition to its plant

in County Louth, Cooley recently reopened the

Old Kilbeggan distillery, which had been shut-

tered for more than half a century.

This brings the number of Irish distilleries

to only four todaycompare that to 90 in Scot-

landbut these four are producing an impres-

sive range of whiskey styles. The three main

categories are malt, single grain and pure pot

still, the latter a unique Irish style made from

a mash of malted and unmalted barley. Most

Irish brands are blends, and some combine

two or all three of these styles. Heres an over-

    view of the brandscape:

    Midleton Distillery produces Jameson and

Jamesons premium reserve range (of which

there are currently six expressions), Powers

and Midleton Very Rare, which is vintage-dat-

ed. These brands are all blends of pot still and

grain spirit. Also made at Midleton are Paddy

and Tullamore Dew, which add malt whiskey to

    REDBREAST 12-YEAR-OLD IRISH WHISKEY

    COLOR | Deep amber

NOSE | Spice cake, nuts, sherry, cream soda, meadow fl owers and grass, honey, cherries,

    linseed oil, rye-like overtones.

PALATE | Silky mouthfeel, with tastes of ginger cake and treacle sponge, malt, butter, maple

syrup, a hint of cinnamon. Its simultaneously redolent of a Vermont breakfast and a sticky

English dessert. Sweet but not cloying.

FINISH | Oily, spicy and long, with honey, sherry and licorice.

    PRICE | $50

These pot stills at the sprawling Midleton Distillery

produce brands ranging from Jameson to Redbreast.

The old water wheel (right), which dates to 1825

and once provided the power for all distillery opera-

tions, is still turning today. The map below shows the

four extant distilleries in all of Ireland.

the blend, and two pure pot still whiskies, Redbreast 12-year-

    old and Green Spot.

    Old Bushmills produces triple-distilled malts

under the Bushmills brand (including Black

Bush, which is blended with Midleton

grain whiskey and has a sherried fi nish)

    and post-1994 vintages of Knappogue

    Castle single malt.

    The leading brand from Cooley,

    which specializes in reviving old

styles and marks, is Connemara, a

peated single malt that seems un-

Gaelic but in truth harks back to the

golden age of Irish whiskey. Cooley

    also makes the superb Tyrconnell

    unpeated single malt; Kilbeggan,

a blend; and Greenore, the only

    Irish single grain whiskey.

    Not long ago, I uncorked

a bottle of Redbreast, the pure

    pot still spirit frequently cited

as Irelands best. Pure pot still

as a style has a characteristically

    oily mouthfeel and a distinctive

fl avor profi le. Theres no mistaking

    Redbreast for an American whiskey,

although it is plenty sweet. You might well

peg it for a Speyside Scotch, given the fruit and fl oral notes.

Displaying tremendous complexity on the nose and palate, this whiskey

requires some quiet time (in my case, by the fi reside during a snowstorm)

for one to plumb the developing aromas and tastes.

There is ripe fruit on the nose, some sherry and vanilla, and a resin-

ous, linseed-like tang. I also found a pleasing note of rye spice, although

no rye is used in the mash. Redbreast is positively fat on the tongue. Roll

it around the mouth, and all kinds of fl avors

come welling upmalt, ginger, toffee, even

cinnamon. The fi nish is long and oily,

    with a faint licorice tail.

All of this mouth drama comes

as an exceptional value. If you

    drink much single-malt Scotch,

you may have noticed that prices

have shot skyward in the past

two years, fi nancial crisis be

    damned. Redbreast 12-year-old,

by comparison, is a great deal at

about $50 per bottle. (I should add

that the same is true of some of the

    best bourbons.)

Does it get any better? Well,

    yes: Redbreast 15-year-old is com-

    ing. This older expression, which

was only released once, in very

limited quantities, in Europe, will be

available in the United States this fall.

Meantime, fi nd yourself a bottle

of the 12-year-old and raise a glass to

County Corks pure pot still perfectionists.

As they say over there, Up Cork!

Its not necessarily what you know, but who

Know that you have the luxury to be dis-

Bigger and better options will appear. The

valid, but solid gold. The way you mold

know that the potential is limitlessas long

as you dont let the pressure get to you.
