    Getting Started

    Setting Up Your nviBefore mounting the nvi, see theImportant Safety and Product Informationguide for informationabout laws pertaining to windshield mounting.

    Mounting Your nvi1. Remove the clear plastic from the suction cup. Place the suction cup on the

    windshield.

    2. Flip the lever back toward the windshield.

    3. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm.4. Plug the vehicle power cable into the back of

    your nvi.

    5. Plug the other end of the vehicle powercable into a power outlet in your vehicle.

    Your unit should turn on automatically if it isplugged in and the vehicle is running. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    6. Fit the bottom of your nvi into the cradle.

    7. Tilt your nvi back until it snaps into place.

    8. If you are using a trafc receiver in Europe,

    connect the external antenna to the trafcreceiver and secure it to the windshield usingthe suction cups. (Trafc receivers are includedin some nvi packages. See page iv.)

    WARNING: This product contains a lithium-ion battery. To prevent damage, remove the unit from thevehicle when exiting or store it out of direct sunlight.

    Acquiring Satellites1. Go outdoors to an open area,

    away from tall buildings and trees.2. Turn on your nvi.

    Acquiring satellite signals can take afew minutes. The bars indicatesatellite strength. When at least one

    of the bars is green, your nvi hasacquired satellite signals.

    Selecting a Usage Mode

    Automobile

    Pedestrian

    Bicycle

    Your nvi offers several usage

    modes for navigation methods.Routing is calculated differentlybased on your usage mode. Forexample, in Pedestrian usage modewith cityXplorermaps loaded, your

    nvi calculates a route that uses a

    combination of public transit options,such as riding a bus or subway, and

    walking. cityXplorer maps are notincluded with your nvi. Seewww.garmin.comto purchasecityXplorer maps.

    To change your usage mode:

    1. From the Main menu, touch theusage mode icon on the upper-left corner.

    2. Select a mode, and touch OK.

    3. TouchYes, and follow the

    on-screen instructions tocongure your settings.

    Navigating Off RoadIf you are not following roadwaysas you navigate, use Off Road

    mode. Touch Tools> Settings>Navigation > Route Preference >OffRoad> OK.

    accidental screen touches.Touch Power Offto turn off yournvi. You can also turn off thenvi by holding the power buttonfor approximately three seconds.

    Resetting Your nviIf your nvi stops functioning, resetyour nvi by pressing and holdingthe Powerbutton.

    Adjusting the VolumeFrom the Main menu, touch Volume.Touch and to adjust thevolume. Touch the box next to Muteto mute all audio.

    Navigating the ScreensTo quickly return to the Mainmenu, touch and hold .

    Touch and to see morechoices. Touch and hold to scrollfaster.

    Finding YourYour DestinationThe Where To? menu providesseveral different categories for youto use when searching for addresses,cities, and other locations. The

    detailed maps loaded in your nvicontain millions of points of interest,such as restaurants, hotels, and autoservices.

    Using the Itinerary PageIn Pedestrian usage mode, theItinerary page appears after youtouch Go!.

    Select a leg of the route to viewmore detailed instructions, ortouch Start to create a route.

    Using the Route OptionsPage

    In Pedestrian usage mode, the RouteOptions page appears after you touchGo! if you have cityXplorer maps forthe current metropolitan area loadedon your nvi. See www.garmin.comto purchase cityXplorer maps.

    1. Select a route from the RouteOptions page to view the Itinerary

    page. Each route on the pageoffers a different combinationof public transit or pedestrianoptions.

    The Where To? menu providesseveral different categories you canuse to search for locations. To learnhow to perform a simple search, seepage 4.

    Finding an Address

    NOTE: Depending on the versionof the maps loaded on your nvi,the button names can changeand some steps could be ordered

    differently.

    1. Touch Where To?> Address.

    2. Change the state, the country, orthe province, if necessary.

    3. Touch Search All.

    If you know the city, touch SpellCity, enter the city/postal code,and touch Done. Select thecity/postal code in the list. (Not allmap data provides postal code

    searching.)

    4. Enter the number of the address,and touch Done.

    5. Enter the street name, and touchDone.

    6. Select the correct street in the list,if necessary.

    7. Touch the address, if necessary.

    Setting a Home LocationSet your home location for the placeyou return to most often.

    1. To set your home location, touch

    Where To?> Go Home.2. Select an option:

    Enter your address.

    Use your current location.

    Choose from a list of recently

    found locations.

    Going HomeTo navigate home after you have setyour home location, touch WhereTo?> Go Home.

    Choose from a list of recentlyfound locations.

    2. Touch Edit, enter your changes,and touch Done.

    If you delete your home location,you can reset it by following thesteps onpage 8.

    Using the Go! PageAfter you have selected a location tonavigate to, the Go! page opens.

    Edit Ratingtouch a circle togive the point of interest (POI)a rating from 1 to 5 stars.

    Report Errorthe itemwill be removed from futuresearches. Reports will be sentto Garmin when your nvi isconnected to a computer. Seepage 24.

    Edit Phone Numberusethe keyboard to change the

    phone number.

    Finding a Place bySpelling the NameUse the on-screen keyboard to spellthe name of the destination you arelooking for. You can also enter letterscontained in the name to narrow thesearch.

    1. Touch Where To?> Points ofInterest> Spell Name.

    2. Using the on-screen keyboard,enter letters of the name of yourdestination.

    3. Touch Done.

    Using the On-ScreenKeyboardWhen an on-screen keyboardappears, touch a letter or number to

    Finding Recently FoundPlacesYour nvi stores the last 50 of yourrecent nds in the Recently Foundlist. The most-recently viewed placesappear at the top of the list. TouchWhere To?> Recently Found to

    view your recently found items.

    Deleting Recently FoundPlacesTo remove all places from theRecently Found list, touch Clear> Yes. All items from the list areremoved, but this does not delete theactual place from your nvi.

    Using Favoritesvorites

    You can save places in yourFavorites so you can quickly ndthem and create routes to them.Your home location is also stored inFavorites.

    Saving Your Current LocationFrom the Map page, touch . Touch

    Save Locationto save your currentlocation.

    Saving Places You Find1. From the Go! page, touch Save.

    2. Touch OK. The place is saved inFavorites.

    3. Select a category. Your savedlocations are listed.

    Finding a Place Usingthe MapUse the Browse Map page to viewdifferent parts of the map. TouchWhere To?> Browse Map.

    Tips for Browsing the MapTouch the map, and drag to view

    different parts of the map.Touch and to zoom in andout.

    Touch any object on the map.An arrow appears, pointing at

    the object, and a box displaysinformation on the location.When the box displays Press formore, several POIs exist at thatlocation. Press to see the list of

    POIs.Touch Saveto save this location.

    Entering CoordinatesIf you know the geographic

    coordinates of your destination, youcan use your nvi to navigate to yourdestination using the latitude andlongitude coordinates. This can beespecially helpful when geocaching.

    1. Touch Where To?>Coordinates.

    2. Touch the coordinate you want toadjust.

    3. Touch Formatto select the

    correct coordinate format for thetype of map you are using.

    4. Enter the coordinates, and touchNext.

    Using Photo NavigationYou can load pictures with location

    information onto your nvi and thencreate routes to them.

    1. Go to http://connect.garmin.com/photos(not available in all areas)to download pictures with location

    information.2. Follow instructions on the Web

    site to select and load pictures.

    3. Touch Where To?> Favorites> Photos. Pictures with location

    information are listed.4. Touch a picture.

    Your route is marked with amagenta line. As you travel, yournvi guides you to your destinationwith voice prompts, arrows on themap, and directions at the top ofthe map. A checkered ag marks

    your destination. If you departfrom the original route, your nvirecalculates the route and providesnew directions.

    A speed limit icon may appear asyou travel on major roadways. Thisicon displays the current speed limitof the roadway.

    On some models, the turn indicatoralso includes Lane Assist, which tellsyou which lane you should be in toprepare for your next maneuver. Seepage ivto view a list of models thatinclude Lane Assist.

    Touch to view the next turn.

    Touch to view the turn list. Touch to zoom in and zoom

    out.

    Touch to return to the Mainmenu.

    Touch to display a differentdata eld.

    Touch to view the Where Am I?page.

    Viewing the TripComputer

    The trip computer displays yourcurrent speed and provides statisticsabout your trip. To view the tripcomputer, touch the Speedeld onthe map.

    NOTE: If you make frequentstops, leave the nvi turned on soit can accurately measure elapsedtime during the trip.

    Resetting Trip ComputerInformationFrom the map, touch the Speedeld.Touch Reset> Reset Trip Datato reset the information on the tripcomputer.

    Touch Reset> Reset Maxto resetthe maximum speed.

    Touch Reset> Reset Fuel Pricetoreset the fuel price.

    Viewing the Turn List

    When you are navigating a route,the turn list displays turn-by-turninstructions for your entire route andthe distance between turns.

    Touch the text bar on the top of themap to open the turn list. Touch aturn on the list to view the next turnfor that route. Touch Show Maptoview the entire route on the BrowseMap page.

    Viewing the Next TurnPage

    When you are navigating a route, thenext turn shows the turn on the mapand the distance and time left beforeyou reach the turn.

    To view an upcoming turn on themap, touch the turn indicator in thetop left corner of the map, or touchany turn from the turn list.

    Viewing the JunctionView Page

    On some nvi models, the JunctionView page displays a view of someupcoming junctions and in whichlane you should be driving. To viewthe Junction View page, touch the

    upper-left corner of the Map page.To access the Junction View pagefrom the Next Turn page, touchJunction View.

    In Pedestrian usage mode, your routeis displayed on a two-dimensionalmap. The , , , , , ,and icons indicate the navigation

    Touch to toggle betweenlegs of the route. The nvi

    zooms in and out on each legof your route, but it does notautomatically move to the nextleg.

    Making Hands-Free

    Phone CallsBluetooth wireless technology isavailable on some nvi models. Seepage iv.

    Bluetooth wireless technology

    establishes a wireless link betweentwo devices, such as a mobile phoneand your nvi. To determine whetheryour mobile phone with Bluetoothtechnology is compatible with the

    nvi, go to www.garmin.com/bluetooth.

    The rst time you use two devicestogether you must pair them byestablishing a relationship using

    a PIN or passkey. After the initialpairing, the two devices can

    connect automatically each time youturn them on.

    NOTE: You might have to setyour mobile phone to connect tothe nvi automatically when it isturned on.

    Pairing Your PhoneTo pair and connect, your phone andthe nvi must be turned on and bewithin 33 ft. (10 m) of each other.

    Initiate pairing from your nvi orfrom your phone. Refer to yourphone instructions.

    Pairing Using Your PhoneSettings

    1. Touch Tools> Settings>Bluetooth.

    2. Select Enabled.

    menu called Settings, Bluetooth,Connections, or Hands-free.

    4. Initiate a search for Bluetoothdevices.

    5. Select the nvi from the list ofdevices.

    6. Enter the nvi Bluetooth PIN(1234) into your phone.

    Pairing Using the nviSettings1. From the Main menu, touch Tools

    > Settings> Bluetooth> Add.

    2. Enable the Bluetooth componenton your phone, and enable FindMe/Discoverable/Visible mode.These settings might be in a

    Bluetooth, a Connections, or aHands-free menu.

    3. Touch OK on the nvi.

    4. Select your phone, and touch OK.

    5. Enter the nvi Bluetooth PIN(1234) in your phone.

    When your phone is connected toyour nvi, you are ready to make

    phone calls. Touch Phone on theMain menu to access the Phonemenu.

    When you turn on the nvi, it tries toconnect to the last phone to which it

    was connected.

    Receiving a CallWhen you get a call, the IncomingCall window opens. Touch Answer

    to answer the call. Touch Ignoretoignore the call and stop your phonefrom ringing.

    The internal microphone is in thefront of the nvi; speak normally.

    In a CallDuring a call, the In Callicon

    appears. Touch > End Calltohang up. Touch > Call Optionsfor the following options:

    Touch Tonesdisplays akeypad page so that you can use

    automated systems, such as voicemail.

    Transfer Audio To Phonethisis helpful if you want to turn offthe nvi but remain on the call,

    or if you need privacy. To switchback, touch Transfer Audio ToDevice.

    Mute Microphone.

    NOTE: Depending on the screen

    that appears on your nvi, the InCall icon could look different.

    Using Call WaitingWhen you are on a call and you

    receive a second call (call waiting),the Incoming Call window appears.Touch Answerto answer the call.The rst call is placed on hold.

    Switching Between Calls

    1. Touch > Switch To.

    2. Touch End Callto hang up. Thisdoes not disconnect the call onhold.

    Using Your Phone BookEach time your phone connects

    with the nvi, the phone book isautomatically loaded into the nvi.It can take a few minutes for thephone book to be available. Phonebook transfer is not available on allphones.

    1. Touch Phone> Phone Book.

    2. Touch the phone book entry(contact) you want to call.

    3. Touch Callto call the contact.

    Dialing a Point of Interest1. Touch Phone> Points of

    Interest.

    2. Search for the point of interestyou want to call.

    3. Touch Callor touch the phonenumber.

    Dialing a Number1. Touch Phone> Dial.

    2. Enter the number, and touch Dial.

    Viewing Your Call HistoryEach time your phone connects

    to the nvi, your call history isautomatically transferred to the nvi.It can take a few minutes to transferthis data to the nvi.

    2. Touch a category to view thosecalls. The calls are listed inchronological order. The most-recent calls are at the top of thelist.

    3. Touch an entry, and touch Dial.

    Calling HomeEnter a phone number for your homelocation so you can quickly callhome.

    Transferring Files1. Browse your computer for the le

    you want to copy.2. Highlight the le., and click Edit>

    Copy.

    3. Open the Garmin or memorycard drive/volume.

    4. Click Edit> Paste. The leappears in the list of les in thenvi memory or on the memorycard.

    5. When you are nishedtransferring les, click in your

    toolbar (system tray), or drag thevolume icon to the Trash onMac computers.

    6. Unplug your nvi from yourcomputer.

    Deleting Files1. Connect the nvi to your

    computer, and open the nvi ormemory card drive/volume.

    2. Highlight the le you want todelete.

    3. Press the Deletekey on the

    computer keyboard.CAUTION: If you do not knowthe purpose of a le, do notdeleteit. Your nvi memory containsimportant system les that shouldnot be deleted.

    Use the picture viewer to viewpictures that you have stored in yournvi or on a memory card.

    Touch the map and drag toview different parts of themap.

    Updating Conversion RatesYou can update the currency

    conversion rates manually so thatyou are always using the mostcurrent rates.

    1. Touch Tools> Unit Converter>Conversion.

    2. Select Currency, and touch OK.3. Touch the currency buttons and

    select the currencies you want toupdate.

    4. Touch Update.

    5. Touch the boxes next to thecurrencies to enter new rates.

    6. Touch Saveto save the newrates. Touch Restoreto use theoriginal rates.

    Using ecoRoute

    Touch Tools> ecoRoute.

    The ecoRoute feature calculatesyour vehicle fuel economy, carbonfootprint, and the fuel price ofnavigating to a destination, andoffers tools for improving fuel

    efciency.

    The data provided by the ecoRoutefeature are estimates only. Thedata is not actually read from yourvehicle. To receive more-accurate

    fuel reports for your specic vehicleand driving habits, calibrate the fueleconomy.

    The rst time you access theecoRoute features you will be asked

    to enter fuel and mileage informationabout your vehicle.

    Viewing the Fuel ReportIf you have entered your vehicle

    prole and the current fuel price,your nvi calculates the averagefuel economy for your vehicle, yourcarbon footprint, and the cost of thefuel consumed.

    The fuel consumption data isbased on estimates for speed andacceleration for an average vehicle.

    Touch Tools> ecoRoute> FuelReport.

    TIP: To ensure fuel data is alwaysrecorded, keep your nvi turnedon while driving.

    Calibrating the Fuel EconomyCalibrate the fuel economy to receive

    more-accurate fuel reports for yourspecic vehicle and driving habits.Calibrate when you ll up your fueltank.

    1. Calculate your miles per gallon or

    liters per 100 kilometers.2. Touch Tools> ecoRoute> Fuel

    Report> Calibrate.

    3. Touch and to enter theresult from step 1.

    4. Touch OK.

    Viewing the Mileage Report

    Mileage reports provide the distance,the time, the average fuel economy,and the fuel cost of navigating to adestination.

    A mileage report is created for

    every route that you drive. If youstop a route on your nvi, a mileagereport is created for the distance youtraveled.

    1. Touch Tools> ecoRoute>Mileage Report.

    2. Select a report.You can view up to 20 mileagereports on your nvi. You can alsoaccess mileage reports in the Reportsfolder on your nvi drive/volume.

    Viewing OffersIf your nvi package includes a

    trafc receiver, you will receivelocation-relevant offers and coupons.Ad-based trafc information is onlyavailable in North America.

    The trafc receiver must be

    connected to external power and youmust be in a coverage area to receivead-based trafc information. Whenan offer appears on the screen, touchthe offer to search for the nearest

    location related to that offer. If theoffer includes a coupon icon, touchthe coupon icon on the Go! page toreceive a coupon code. Write downthis code and present it when youarrive at the location.

    CAUTION: Do not attempt towrite down the coupon codeswhile driving.

    To view a list of the offers you havereceived, touch Tools > Offers.

    To disable offers, you must disabletrafc. Touch Tools > Settings >Trafc, and clear the Enable Trafccheck box.

    Trafc in Your AreaWhen you are receiving trafc

    information, a trafc iconappearsin the upper-left corner of the Mappage. The trafc icon changes colorto indicate the severity of trafcconditions on your route or the roadyou are currently travelling.

    Green Low severityTrafc isowingnormally.

    YellowMediumseverity

    Trafc isslightlycongested.

    Red High severity

    Trafc isheavily

    congestedor stopped.

    Trafc on Your RouteWhen calculating your route, the

    nvi examines the current trafc andautomatically optimizes the routefor the shortest time. If a severetrafc delay occurs on your routewhile you are navigating, the nviautomatically recalculates the route.You might still be routed throughtrafc if no better alternative routesexist.

    Changing the NavigationSettings

    Touch Tools > Settings >Navigation.

    Route Preferenceselect apreference for calculating your route:

    Faster Timeto calculate routesthat are faster to drive but can belonger in distance.

    Shorter Distanceto calculateroutes that are shorter in distance

    but can take more time to drive.Off Roadto calculate point-to-point routes (without roads).

    Less Fuel to calculate routesthat could use less fuel than other

    routes. The route calculation isbased on road speeds and vehicleacceleration data for a givenroute.

    Avoidancesselect the road typesyou want to avoid on your routes.

    Transit Typesselect which modeof public transit you would like

    your nvi to avoid when calculatingroutes. Available when cityXplorermaps are loaded. Seepage 6.

    Caring for Your nviYour nvi contains sensitiveelectronic components that can bepermanently damaged if exposedto excessive shock or vibration. To

    minimize the risk of damage to yournvi, avoid dropping your unit andoperating it in high-shock and high-vibration environments.

    Cleaning the Unit

    The nvi is constructed of high-quality materials and does notrequire user maintenance other thancleaning. Clean the outer casingof the unit (not the touchscreen)

    using a cloth dampened with a milddetergent solution, and then wipeit dry. Avoid chemical cleaners andsolvents that can damage plasticcomponents.

    Cleaning the TouchscreenClean the touchscreen with a soft,clean, lint-free cloth. Use water,isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglasscleaner, if needed. Apply the liquidto the cloth, and then gently wipe thetouchscreen.

    Protecting Your nviDo not store the nvi whereprolonged exposure to extremetemperatures can occur, becauseit can cause permanent damage.

    Do not expose the nvi to water.Contact with water can cause thisunit to malfunction.
