Highlights of January Meeting
Mark Steele welcomed members and guests on Feb 3. Frank Holman let the Pledge of Allegiance. Mark made the fol-lowing announcement:
Spring Roundup date has changed to April 20.
Our featured speaker, Ryan Reeves, who previously presented an outstanding history of the Goodyear Airport, traveled to Eng-land to research aviation history for a book titled “A Winged Pilgrimage”. He notes that, even though aviation history is barely 100 years old, many key historical sites no longer exist, and in the US, there are not many young people active in the support and preservation of this history.
Not so in England, where aviation history is actively preserved and the WWII role of US airmen is revered throughout the country. Highlights of his trip included:
USS Intrepid Museum in New York City that still displays the WWII kill board and has a recreation of a kamikaze raid from 1944.
In England, he visited the Cardington Air-ship Sheds which have been rebuilt and preserved to display the history of lighter-than-air aviation.
Next stop was Old Warden where WWI flight-worthy aircraft are displayed and flown. Housed there is a Blackburn Mono-plane, the oldest airworthy plane in the world.
He then visited the RAF Museum, London
where, on display, is the RAF command ta-ble from the Battle of Britain. Also housed at the museum is a memorial to the Ameri-cans of the 8
th Air Force.
Next stop, RAF Duxford, preserved as it was during WWII, even to tape on the windows. The first operational squadron of Spitfires was based at Duxford and the 1939 vintage control tower is still active. There is also a museum dedicated to US Airmen in Britain.
He visited the Cambridge American Ceme-tary and then traveled to the airfields of East Anglia: RAF Finmere; RAF Framingham, home of the 390
th Bomb Group; and finally,
Thorpe Abbots, home to the 100th Bomb Group also known as “The Bloody Hun-dredth”. No combat unit sustained such heavy losses as the Group's original flight crews; only four of the original thirty-eight co-pilots completed their combat tour of twenty-five missions. The history of the 100
th Bomb Group is the basis for the novel
and movie “12:00 High”.
In the box below are references to the sites Ryan visited. I recommend that those of you who are history buffs but without computers visit your local library and use their comput-ers to read the fascinating histories actively preserved in England. Or better yet, travel to England and visit them in person.
Ryan’s final comment is that history needs to be accessible to youngsters or it won’t be remembered. He was continually astounded by the number of British youngsters that were more familiar with the role of American aviation in WWI and WWI than he was.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
We Need You!!
Let's talk leadership. Your club officers and board directors are all volunteers. We are
always looking for additional volunteers to help lead in many ways. Every two years,
we replace our President & Vice President per our club rules. From time to time, we
have need of new leaders to help the club's operations. We are again seeking help
from you, our members. I would like each of you to consider volunteering to help with
the following club needs:
Vice President - VP recruits and schedules the speakers for each club Members'
Meeting. Sets up the audio/visuals for each meeting. Normally moves to Presi-
dent after two years. Mark Steele will be moving to President next year and we
will need to fill his shoes as VP.
Editor - Stu Mitnik has been our Editor for countless years and recently volun-
teered to be our member chair who maintains the database of all our members,
past & present. We are now looking for a volunteer to replace Stu as editor of
the Cliff Notes.
Secretary - we have been chronically weak in this area and have not had anyone
available to document actions taken by your Board.
On the bright side, we have been successful in bringing on new directors to the Board
and will be presenting them to you in April.
Please think about how you want your club to move forward and how you might help.
We DO need the help!
See you at our March meeting.

Editor’s Corner
We continue to monitor newsletters sent via email that are not being received. We will at-tempt to contact you by phone or other means to ensure that we have the correct email ad-dress on file. If we are unable to obtain a correct email address, we will send your copy of the newsletter via USPS.
The Board has reviewed the response to this year’s dues notices and although working well, we have decided to further improve the process. Beginning in August 2016, dues notices will be sent in a letter separate from Cliff Notes. This letter, sent to both winter and summer addresses, will include dues owed and an opportunity to contribute to the Scholarship Program, although dues and scholarship contributions will need to be sep-arate checks. We will ask you to mail the entire letter back to us with requested infor-mation updates and roster requests. We thank you for your support of our process improvements.
Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.
The history of Honeywell or an old edition of the Newsletter can be found on the GRC webpage http://www.garrettretireesaz.com/

Volunteer Opportunity
AzSEF (Arizona Science and Engineering Fair) and Intel ISEF (International Science and Engi-neering Fair) will BOTH be held at the Phoenix Convention Center this year, and I'd like your help again with Display and Safety. The AzSEF will award spots in the upcoming 2015 Intel ISEF to be held, inPhoenix in May. The AzSEF will run from April 6th to April 8th (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). Student/Project Sign-in is from 8am to 6:30pm on Wednesday (6th), (D&S will run from 8am-8pm) and from 8am-2pm on Thursday (7th). The Fair includes grade school and high school divisions but our focus will be mostly on the high school students that will be competing for spots in the Intel ISEF competition. Last year, there were 1100 students and 900 total projects. The work will include following a checklist to verify that the display meets the documented restrictions for display, dimensions and safety concerns. There will be training and experienced people in D&S to help answer questions should you run across something you are not sure of. The Intel ISEF will be held May 8-13th (D&S begins work on the 7th with training) for students in grades 9-12 who have qualified via their state, regional or country science and engineering fair. Over $4 million in prizes are awarded to these high school innovators from over 75 different coun-tries and territories (this is NOT the same as the science fairs we had as kids!). Would you please consider helping with Display and Safety inspections during one or both of the-se fairs? Please add your name to the list of interested volunteers by emailing Tom Marshall [email protected] and indicate which fair (or both) you are interested in. We’ve had a lot of fun working with these really bright kids last year and I'm sure this year will be even better. It is exciting to see what they come up with. In some cases, it is downright amazing.

MEET VIRGINIA SHERBECK
A SCHOLARSHIP WINNER FROM ASU
put in my best effort, even if the task at hand seemed impossible. Another obstacle in
my education was signing up to be an information technology specialist in the Army Na-
tional Guard during my freshman year at ASU. Although it put my education on hold
several times over my six years in the Guard, the lessons I learned in the Army and dur-
ing my deployment to Afghanistan are invaluable.
When I’m not studying disease processes or how to best care for sick or injured pa-
tients, I like to be active. I enjoy indoor rock climbing and rollerblading. I also like
watching movies, particularly Marvel superhero movies.
I would like to thank the Honeywell retirees’ Club for selecting me to receive a scholar-
ship. This scholarship, in addition to the Post 9/11 GI Bill, has helped cover a lot of the
tuition and fees associated with attending the Arizona State University nursing program.
Virginia is the dependent of Honeywell Retiree Clubs member Laura Lindberg.
As a recent graduate of Arizona State Universi-
ty’s post-baccalaureate nursing program I look
forward to the many opportunities available to
me in the nursing field. After I pass the NCLEX
(National Council Licensure Examination) I hope
to get a job at one of the valley hospitals and
maybe in the future return to school to become
a doctor of nursing practice. I chose nursing
for my second degree because there are so
many different career paths available to those
with a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), the
opportunities are almost limitless.
I have faced many obstacles in pursuing my
education. Being dyslexic made reading and
writing very difficult for me. I learned to always
