Matt will update us on the status of ITEC

(International Turbine Engine Co) a part-

nership between Honeywell and Taiwan da-

ting to the 1980’s. This program developed

the F125, our first afterburning turbofan

used in the AIDC (Taiwan) developed IDF

(Indigenous Defense Fighter). The non-

afterburning version, F124, currently pow-

ers the Aero Vodochody L-159 Alca and the

Alenia Aermacchi M-346 advanced light jet

fighters/ trainers.

Highlights of April Meeting

President Ed Taschner welcomed mem-bers and guests to the meeting on Septem-ber 2. Dennis Mauer led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ed’s first announcement was the new name for our newsletter “Cliff Notes” in honor of our founder Cliff Garrett. Pat Hurley was the winning submitter and he gave his prize to the Scholarship Fund. John and Marge Konves, grandparents of David Konves, a former scholarship recipient, were in the audience. It was also announced that $100 of our monthly $200 charitable contribution will be given to the Scholarship Fund.

Ed then introduced G. G. George, Presi-dent Encanto Citizens Assn, who has been contracted to write the history of the Arizo-na State Fair. It turns out that when Garrett first located in the Valley, the site was on what is now the Fairgrounds. The reloca-tion from California was to move Garrett out of the range of Japanese aircraft during WWII. Kevin Dittmar presented the EGTS (elec-tric ground taxi system) in lieu of Barney Heath who was traveling. This program is a partnership with Safran, manufacturer of wheels and brakes for Airbus. Short haul airline routes consume about 6% of total fuel on the ground. This system, using the APU as the energy source for taxi, poten-tially can save up to 4% of that total fuel.

This system was demonstrated at the Paris Airshow to rave reviews. 30 pilots for 18 airlines have tested this system with posi-tive feedback.

The system includes: pilot interface unit; electric motor control unit; power converter (270 v dc to the wheels); EGTS control unit; 1 wheel actuator per main gear. Total weight is < 400kg (~ 70 kg of cables) with a max weight of 117 kg for each wheel unit.

In addition to fuel savings, there are addition-al benefits to both the airlines and airlines in-cluding:

reduction in pushback costs (up to $1500 per pushback at some airports)

improved departure performance – no waiting for available tug

carbon credit (emissions reductions) FOD reduction Up to 50% ground noise reductions

System specifications are: 70 kva ~ 20 kt taxi speed fwd and reverse ~ 60:1 gear ratio in wheel unit ~ 20,000 Nm torque Slope range -1.5 % to +2%

This month’s charitable donation went to the Habitat for Humanity. 50/50 winners were Dick Dippold and Gary Kains. Club guide-lines dictate that we support local charities exclusively.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Thanks in part to GRC members Frank Holman and Bob Davenport, the scholarship

program is taking flight and the Scholarship Foundation’s fund has started to grow

substantially. I’m confident we’ll be able to make more awards and increase those

awards to be more significant to those students who have earned them. Please … keep

those contributions coming so we can help our kids (grandkids, mostly) to a brighter

and better future.

Put Wednesday, October 7, on your calendar to join us at the Scottsdale Senior Center.

Matt Thraen will talk to us about the International Turbine Engine Company (a joint

engine development and production venture between Honeywell and the Aerospace In-

dustrial Development Center in Taiwan) and the many hats he wears as President of

ITEC, Director of International Technical Sales and Board Director for the Light Heli-

copter Turbine Engine Company, an engine development and production partnership

between Honeywell and Rolls Royce. Matt’s an ASU grad and has served his entire pro-

fessional career within Garrett/AlliedSignal/Honeywell. Matt’s one of the solid guys in

this world. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet and hear him.

And, finally … We will be sending out our updated club rosters mid-November. This

will be the new normal because we decided to assimilate any late changes rather than

continue to publish addendums. Further, we will no longer print extras for pick up at

our Members’ Meetings. We arrived at this decision because we ended up with count-

less extra copies last year. I believe this will help make us more efficient while still

serving you, our Members.

HRSC & GRC Scholarship Program

Welcome back. The Scholarship Committee was hard at work this summer and we would

like to share our news: Six remarkable students received awards this year, totaling $6200.

The recipients are: Hailey Davenport (UofA), Rachael Davey (UofA), Jonathan Dwyer (ASU),

Danielle Martinez (ASU) , Virginia Sherbeck (ASU), and Christina Keigher Wachter (NAU).

Each month a profile of our award winners will appear in the Bridge. Look for all of the arti-

cles about these amazing students in upcoming issues.

Our scholarship program has met all IRS criteria to be a charitable, non-profit organization.

The Honeywell Retiree Club Scholarship Program is now “The Honeywell Retiree Clubs

Scholarship Foundation”. It is a recognized 501(c)3 charity. This means that members (or

anyone) may now make tax deductible donations to the Foundation in support of our

scholarship program. Honeywell International, The Honeywell Retiree’s Social Club of Ari-

zona, and The Garrett Retiree’s Club have sponsored this program for several years. Now,

we hope that our membership will also help us increase our working funds to expand this

program.

The Scholarship Foundation has its own Board of Directors. The GRC members of this Board

are Frank Holman and Bob Davenport. Specific process and bylaws are being developed

by our Scholarship Foundation Board and will be posted to the HRSC & GRC web sites as

soon as they are published.

For anyone wanting to make a donation, please contact any of the Board members, be-

(NAU), and University of Arizona (U of A) to ensure that our application process is available to students.

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.

Dog Did Not Eat My Homework.

The American West, 150 Years Ago

photographer, for Lt. George Montague Wheeler's U.S. Geograph-

ical Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian. Photo taken in

Timothy O'Sullivan's darkroom wagon, pulled by four mules, entered the frame

at the right side of the photograph, reached the center of the image, and

turned around, heading back out of the frame. Footprints lead from the wagon

toward the camera, revealing the photographer's path. Photo taken in 1867, in

In 1867, O'Sullivan traveled to Virginia City, Nevada to document the activities at

the Savage and the Gould and Curry mines on the Comstock Lode, the richest silver

deposit in America. Working nine hundred feet underground, lit by an improvised

flash -- a burning magnesium wire, O'Sullivan photographed the miners in tunnels,

shafts, and lifts.

In the 1860s and 70s, photographer Timothy O'Sullivan created some of the best-

known images in American History. After covering the U.S. Civil War, (many of his

photos appear in this earlier series), O'Sullivan joined a number of expeditions orga-

nized by the federal government to help document the new frontiers in the American

West. The teams were composed of soldiers, scientists, artists, and photographers,

and tasked with discovering the best ways to take advantage of the region's untapped

natural resources. O'Sullivan brought an amazing eye and work ethic, composing pho-

tographs that evoked the vastness of the West. He also documented the Native Ameri-

can population as well as the pioneers who were already altering the landscape.

Above all, O'Sullivan captured -- for the first time on film -- the natural beauty of the

American West in a way that would later influence Ansel Adams and thousands more

photographers to come.
