2 I am likely to send my child to the PS -K program and less likely to keep them atGarrison for the older years becuase of the lack of options for a middle and highschool.

Dec 14, 2012 8:47 AM

3 because it was announced that it was closing. Dec 14, 2012 7:48 AM

4 I don't really understand this question so will just explain. I was prospectiveparent at Garrison for PS-3 and quite intrigued by what I heard about the school. But I crossed it off my list of schools to consider in the lottery after the closingwas announced. If plans were changed and Garrison were to stay open, I wouldconsider it again. But I'm OOB so it's probably unlikely I would get in.

6 Note that "test scores" and "Cardozo" are reasons NOT to enroll, but the PTAand location are reasons TO enroll.

Page 3, Q1. If Garrison offered a language program?

1 Our son has been speaking Spanish and English most of his life, and we wouldlike to maintain that. We may choose a bilingual school over Garrison, if Garrisondoes not offer Spanish and other options are available that do.

Dec 16, 2012 7:44 PM

2 If we sought out charter school options for our son it would probably be to enrollin a bilingual program. It would be great to have that in our local school.

Dec 15, 2012 12:36 PM

3 Unless Garrison is one of the best school of the country Dec 14, 2012 7:34 PM

4 I like the idea of a language program but, the location of Garrison is really thereason I would like to send my child.

Dec 14, 2012 9:22 AM

5 My older child has language opportunities after school at his public school. Dec 14, 2012 8:49 AM

6 Language is great and would be a small plus. However, the overall quality of theeducation is more important to me.

Dec 14, 2012 7:27 AM

7 Would have to be very well thought out and executed well. Dec 14, 2012 3:19 AM

8 My toddlers have a Spanish speaking caregiver and my husband speaks

Spanish.

Dec 13, 2012 8:07 PM

9 Important in these days to speak multiple language. it is more inclusive andencourages development of another area of the child's brain.

Page 3, Q3. If Garrison offered an integrated arts program?

1 Arts are crucial for child develoment. Dec 16, 2012 7:06 PM

2 Y Dec 15, 2012 9:05 PM

3 Because arts programs improve imagination and are important in childrendevelopment.

Dec 14, 2012 7:34 PM

4 I believe arts is essential particularly at the younger ages Dec 14, 2012 1:04 PM

5 Fillmore is a better program than Garrison could have on its own. Dec 14, 2012 8:49 AM

6 Again, probably a small plus for me. Dec 14, 2012 7:27 AM

7 I understand that presently the children take a bus once a week to an artscenter. I think there is value and enrichment in the act of going to a differentcampus for a "special" activity like this. So an arts program at the school wouldbe great, but its value would be offset, in my mind, by losing the weekly "fieldtrip" experience.

Dec 14, 2012 7:21 AM

8 I don't think there is enough emphasis on art in many schools and it gives kids a

more well rounded education.

Dec 13, 2012 8:07 PM

9 My husband and I are musicians and believe in molding creative minds! Dec 12, 2012 12:38 PM

10 Would be nice, not a priority for me. (What REALLY matters isschool/educational quality overall.)

Page 3, Q5. If Garrison offered another integrated program?

1 Same answer Dec 14, 2012 7:27 AM

2 I'm not sure how an "integrated program" would differ from how I expect thecurrent curriculum to incorporate Science/Technology, Social Sciences,Environment/Sustainability, and Global education.

Dec 14, 2012 7:21 AM

3 I would like my kids to have a heavier exposure to science. Dec 13, 2012 8:07 PM

4 More ways to reach each child to help them develop and learn Dec 12, 2012 4:20 PM

5 In general, more options mean more opportunities for my child. Dec 12, 2012 11:46 AM

Page 3, Q7. If Garrison had programming for the community as a whole?

1 Garrison sits in the middle of a thriving community. I would be proud to send mychild to a school that sees itself as a center of that community.

Dec 16, 2012 7:44 PM

2 Garrison can connect more deeply to the area aound it, which is growing at arapid pace and moving in a very positive direction.

Dec 16, 2012 7:06 PM

3 I think this would enhance the integration of the school with the neighborhoodand increase the community's commitment to making Garrison a vibrant, centralelement of the neighborhood.

Dec 14, 2012 7:21 AM

4 So the community could become more envolved and have ways to interact andsupport the school

Dec 12, 2012 4:20 PM

5 Community and schools should go hand in hand! Dec 12, 2012 12:38 PM

Page 4, Q1. If Chancellor commits to fully modernize Garrison by end of 2014?

1 Garrison is in terrible shape. Full modernization would be a demonstration ofcommitment and seriousness on the part of DCPS.

Dec 16, 2012 7:46 PM

2 A modernized school would be nice but wouldn't change how I feel aboutGarrison

Dec 15, 2012 12:38 PM

3 Because the school looks like a prison with air conditioning devices sticking outof windows. In 2012, I expect the architecture to be more transparent, with moresunlight and colors, and more environmentally friendly.

Dec 14, 2012 7:41 PM

4 Garrison is on the right track and has the potential to be a desirable school ifChancellor Henderson commits to keeping the school open and the facilities arerenovated.

Dec 14, 2012 11:02 AM

5 Timing would be ideal. New stuff is always nice. Dec 14, 2012 7:22 AM

6 Their commitment would give me faith in our choice to send our kids there, knowing that they won't face the instability of closure/transfer.

Dec 14, 2012 6:48 AM

7 I want my child to be able to go to a school that can have great indoor and

outdoor facilities.

Page 4, Q2. If Garrison were to be consolidated with Seaton at Seaton's location?

1 Seaton is too far and does not have community involvement Dec 17, 2012 8:34 AM

2 Seaton's scores are terrible, and I am not aware of a strong principal there. Ifthat school leader does reach out to Garrison families, that would help.

Dec 16, 2012 7:46 PM

3 Garrison should be building on its strengths at its current location. Dec 16, 2012 7:07 PM

4 Too far away. Overcrowding and lower academic achievement. Dec 15, 2012 9:06 PM

5 Too far away, concerned with community involvement and proximity Dec 15, 2012 8:12 PM

6 So much progress has been made at Garrison and so many people have put alot of work into improving the school. Also Seaton has poorer academicperformance and is further from our home.

Dec 15, 2012 12:38 PM

7 No, I would not send my children to a school that is further away, with lesscommunity involvement, for worse test score. Who would?

Dec 14, 2012 7:41 PM

8 Location, state of schools facility Dec 14, 2012 1:42 PM

9 I will not send my child to Seaton. In the alternative, we are exploring publiccharter school options, private school and moving.

Dec 14, 2012 11:02 AM

10 Overcrowding Dec 14, 2012 10:42 AM

11 It is farther away and my experience with Garrison has been so great. I am amember of the loagn circle community association and they have been soinvolved with Garrison. That is really where I want my child to go. The teachersand principal seem so committed to its success and the new library is a greatstart.

Dec 14, 2012 9:22 AM

12 Seaton is not an acceptable choice for our family. Dec 14, 2012 7:28 AM

13 We live a block away from Garrison. It's location is a major reason why we find itattractive.

Dec 14, 2012 7:22 AM

14 Part of the appeal is giving our children the neighborhood-based education theydeserve, in the strong community in which we live.

Dec 14, 2012 6:48 AM

15 We would likely try to lottery in to another school with better programs. Dec 13, 2012 8:08 PM

16 too far, Seaton has no parental involvement, closing Garrison would be a sign tome that DCPS does not care about parents who are trying to turn a schoolaround. Why would I send my kids to a school system that feels that way????

Dec 13, 2012 11:27 AM

17 Too far for students. Dec 12, 2012 5:43 PM

18 No point there not doing better than Garrison. And I have to drive there it's notwalkable.

Dec 12, 2012 4:24 PM

19 Walk is too long. Test scores are lower. Dec 12, 2012 11:46 AM

20 It would eliminate the convenience of Garrison, and the intimate link betweenGarrison and our community, both of which are the reasons we have been

considering Garrison at all. It would simultaneously raise concerns about safety(especially in getting there), overcrowding, and probably having to move schoolsagain in a few years, which I think would be very hard on the little ones.

Page 5, Q1. If Shaw Middle School were relocated at Cardozo High School?

1 I'm a lot more troubled about the empty building at Shaw right now. it is wastedspace in a beautiful neighborhood.

Dec 16, 2012 7:48 PM

2 Unlikely to keep kids in school in after elementaryp Dec 15, 2012 9:08 PM

3 Location, quality of environment Dec 14, 2012 1:43 PM

4 With a 2 1/2 year old daughter, I really haven't considered middle and highschool scenarios.

Dec 14, 2012 7:24 AM

5 Not informed on this matter. Dec 14, 2012 6:50 AM

6 I think 6th graders are too young to be with older kids unless the class size isreally small like at a small private school.

Dec 13, 2012 8:09 PM

7 I will not send my kids to shaw middle school or cardozo regardless. Dec 13, 2012 11:28 AM

8 Its a landmark for a high school Dec 12, 2012 5:44 PM

9 I would have to see what it was like. My oldest is in 2nd grade, I don't know whatit will be like. Though I don't really want my 6 or 7th Grader at a school with 12thgraders. It's kind of the like moving the 6th graders from the lower grades only toput them with the 12th graders that does not make sense.

Dec 12, 2012 4:33 PM

10 I see pros and cons here... Dec 12, 2012 11:46 AM

Page 5, Q2. If the middle and high schools that Garrison feeds into were stronger?

1 I currently see public and charter elementary school options in thisneighborhood, but no secondary schools that are strong enough. In their currentstates, our son would not go to Shaw or Cardozo.

Dec 16, 2012 7:48 PM

2 It would be nice to not have to put my child's education in the hands of thelottery.

Dec 13, 2012 8:09 PM

3 Better middle and high schools will keep parents of high-performing kids atGarrison for longer, making it a better school in higher grade levels.

Dec 13, 2012 11:28 AM

4 more supportive Dec 12, 2012 5:44 PM

5 So my kids have the best school they can within our neighborhood. Dec 12, 2012 4:33 PM

6 I would have checked "a lot more likely" except that there are several years forimprovement to occur before this is a real issue for me.

Dec 12, 2012 11:46 AM

7 At this point we assume that we'll have to go private by grade 7 anyway. Thismakes private elementary seem more necessary (to ensureadmissions/enrollment for middle and high school).

Page 7, Q2. If the scenarios you ranked as your top four become a reality, will you enroll/keep your child atGarrison/contribute your time and resources to Garrison?

1 As long as Spanish is offered in the language program. Dec 16, 2012 7:51 PM

2 Contribute resources, absolutely. Child is at another school now, not sure if Iwould move him under any improvements. Absolutely know we would use thefacilities and do anything we could to strengthen.

Dec 15, 2012 8:17 PM

3 Absolutely! Dec 15, 2012 12:45 PM

4 Maybe Dec 14, 2012 7:09 PM

5 Scenario ranking above not working. Dec 14, 2012 11:05 AM

6 I can't answer this question since I'm OOB, but if that happened it would be astrong contender for our lottery application.

Dec 14, 2012 7:31 AM

7 Probably Dec 14, 2012 7:27 AM

8 The ranking system didn't work for me but yes, if what did really matterhappened I'd consider it.

Dec 14, 2012 3:23 AM

9 Middle and high school are most important. Dec 13, 2012 7:50 PM

10 Very likely! Dec 12, 2012 12:39 PM

Page 7, Q3. If you decide no to enroll/keep your child at Garrison, what will you do?

1 If a lottery to a better schools is not available, sadly we plan to move. Dec 14, 2012 8:53 AM

the best option our children deserve.

Page 8, Q6. Are you likely to enroll your child in a DC Public School?

1 Quality of education Dec 14, 2012 1:45 PM

2 depends on lottery Dec 14, 2012 12:22 PM

3 I believe in public education and believe that all children should have aneighborhood school.

Dec 14, 2012 12:09 PM

4 Because my background is in education and I believe in public education. But, Iwant the school my child goes to to be supported by the community and have astrong principal with excellent teachers which I believe Garrison has.

5 We believe in the institution of public education. Dec 14, 2012 9:08 AM

6 my other child attends a DC public school through the lottery Dec 14, 2012 8:54 AM

7 Strong believer in public education Dec 14, 2012 7:32 AM

8 A lot depends on whether Garrison stays open and whether our daughter isaccepted to the preschool program.

Dec 14, 2012 7:28 AM

9 We can't afford private, we love DC and have put a lot into our community. Dec 14, 2012 6:56 AM

10 Too soon to tell. Would like to but not convinced its viable yet. Dec 14, 2012 3:11 AM

11 My son already goes to a DC public school Dec 13, 2012 8:12 PM

12 only if Garrison stays open and does not merge with Seaton Dec 13, 2012 11:30 AM

13 Because I would like to support the improvement of DCPS. Hoping they will thesupport our kids by giving there schools the tools they need to help the students

Dec 12, 2012 4:56 PM

14 I believe in public education. Dec 12, 2012 11:51 AM
