We hope to see you again!
TrIp repOrTThe Gartner IT Infrastructure & Operations Management Summit 2013 was held on 3 – 4 June at the Estrel in Berlin. This report summarizes and provides highlights from the event.
Overview2013 marked the second Gartner IT Infrastructure & Operations Management Summit with over 400 attendees from 32 countries. The theme was “Delivering More for Less in an Age of New Complexity” and to provide solid advice on achieving that goal we designed a robust agenda addressing issues around: Lowering Cost, Increasing Business Value, IT Operations Excellence, Mobile, Client Computing and Networks, and Virtualization and Cloud Computing. The subjects included current thinking on sustainability issues, sourcing practices and Gartner for Technical Professionals also advised on some deeply technical issues.
Gartner’s goal for this event was to inspire IT Infrastructure and Operations leaders to identify and work towards the optimal level of complexity for all points in their organization and infrastructure. Highlights included keynote guest speaker Jim Lawless — who inspired delegates to face their fears and dictate their own life story — and powerful end-user case studies from Tata Global Beverages, Swedbank, Société Générale Equipment Finance and many more.

Gartner Opening Keynote: Dealing with Complexity Through Design-Centered IT
Cameron haight, Gartner
The complexity that has evolved within IT over several decades will not be solved overnight. It also will not be solved by merely making things simpler. Simplicity, as we discovered, is not always operationally more simple. Rather, solving complexity will require a holistic, systems-oriented approach that incorporates solutions-based design thinking. In this context, our designs need to not be simpler per se, but to be able to absorb more complexity and thus offload some of the cognitive overload that our end users are having to increasingly cope with.
The world needs complexity because the problems we are trying to solve within IT are not always trivial, but as systems designers we should not impose this upon our customers. Finally, as systems architects, we need to make sure to incorporate the concepts of sociable design and cognitive congeniality such that our systems are increasingly able to adapt to the way people work, and not force people to adapt to the way machines work.

Gartner Closing Keynote:
Milind Govekar and Ian head, Gartner
Two days of intensive information exchange in Berlin with the opportunity to hear Gartner’s advice concluded with the final keynote. The breadth of coverage was huge, as indeed are the responsibilities of infrastructure and operations in all our client and prospect organizations.
The theme of “Delivering More for Less in an Age of New Complexity” had been addressed with Gartner’s strategic and technical thinking from some of our most respected analysts on subjects as diverse as the Top Technology Trends, Virtualization Scenarios, Sourcing Best Practices, Data Centre Sustainability, Cost Reduction and Financial Management to name but a few. It is clear that infrastructure and operations practitioners have some of the greatest challenges in the IT business. Our attendees left with a wealth of Gartner’s best and most current advice on how to stay ahead of the game and chart a roadmap for the future–withconfidence!

Guest Keynote Speaker: Data Driven performance
Mark Gallagher, formula One Industry expert
The Formula One motor racing industry has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last two decades due to the information technology revolution, helping teams to reinvent the way they do business. This has driven new systems and processes which have helped the teams to recognise that data can be mined to create not only significant improvements in performance but mitigate risk and help guarantee positive outcomes. It has led to a step-change in Formula One’s safety record, ending the fatalities which were previously a feature of this high-speed sport. The incremental process and performance improvements brought about by data analysis has also led to a culture of constant improvement, reducing pit stop times to the 2 second mark reached in 2013. Finally, F1’s recognition that data is the key business currency has allowed it to diversify into new markets, selling its data-driven know-how to new customers.
Guest Keynote Speaker: Taming Tigers
Jim Lawless, Author and CeO of Taming Tigers
These are times of enormous change in all areas of business and professional life — but the technology community is leading the change. Never has there been such an opportunity for a technology professional to impact upon a business or an industry — yet howmanywill?Theindividualdecides.Weareallwritingthestoryofourlives.Whetherwe write what it is in our heart and soul to write or whether our “Tiger” — our fears and insecurities — will dictate our story to us is the question.
Of all of the Ten Rules for Taming Tigers, I wanted to stress two to the audience in Berlin. The first was Rule 1: Act Boldly Today, Time is Limited. It forces us to confront the Tiger — andthereforetorealisethetrueblockweface(andtorecognisethatitsinternal). But,moreexcitingly, it asks us to change things today, to make today and adventure, and can move us toward the decision to commit. Second was to challenge the Rulebook — Rule 2. The tech community is challenging our Rulebook every day — but are the changing their own as fast — seizing opportunities, speaking with an authoritative voice to the Board, driving innovation?
