About Tanjung Piai

Tanjung Piai is also known as “The Southernmost Tip of Mainland Asia”. Tanjung Piai is named after this fern locally

known as „Paku Piai‟. It is a type of fern that can live in salineconditions. Tanjung Piai is also home to many species of

mangrove plants and species of animals

According to Wetlands International, Johor holds 28.7% of

mangrove forest in Peninsular Malaysia and 4.7% of total

mangrove forest cover in Malaysia. Tanjung Piai covers 526

hectares of Mangroves and another 400 hectares of inter tidal

mudflats. Mudflats are soft and muddy soil.

It forms the only mangrove corridor that connects Pulau Kukup

and the Sungai Pulai wetlands. The mudflats however are

extensive, namely at the southern-most tip of Tanjung Piai. Five

species of large water birds and 7 species of shorebirds were seen

to be feeding on these mudflats. The mangroves of Tanjung Piai

have been conserved in the past for the protection of theshoreline, as the immediate hinterlands are all cultivated

farmlands.

Peer-to-Peer Education 2011

“Peer -to-Peer Education” is a programme where students from various

secondary schools in Johor area get the chance to share and discuss

environmental issues with our international trainees from different

countries. This programme aims to educate the students about the crisis

our environment is facing and what they could do to save it.

Save The Environment, People! (STEP) has successfully organised

workshops in various schools and educated more than 1000 students.

Besides that, STEP has also formed Green Agent Teams in each school to

execute GREEN environment projects such as recycling activities.

The workshop on 16th of April at

SMK Taman Tun Aminah! The

discussion session in the workshop

allowed the students to ask and fully

understand the knowledge they had

 just gained

At 29th of April, we went to

SMK Taman Desa Tebrau for

our workshop! We received a

small souvenir there and just

look at how happy the

international interns were!
