Gas/Electrical Ovens Repair and Maintenance Tips

Most, if not all, of the cooking in the house is done with the gas or electric oven. This is why it is so important to have a fully-functioning cooking range and oven.

Fortunately for you, maintaining an efficient oven isn’t really that hard and in fact because the setup is so simple you can repair most of the problems yourself.

The Oven Doesn’t Work but Has Power

This may be because of a broken fuse. If that is the case, you have to look for the location of the blown fuse to replace it. Try looking at the fuse or circuit breaker assembly of the range or oven which can be in a separate location. This may be under the cooktop. You can try to lift the range top to find the fuse assembly. Sometimes lifting the elements, removing the drip pans, or checking the sides of the cabinets can give you the location.

Also check out inside the oven where the fuse assembly could be located at the back. Once the broken fuse has been found, all you have to do is unscrew it and replace it with a new one.

Make sure that you replace it with one of the same type and rating. A gas and oven range with a circuit breaker could have the breaker at the control panel. You will need to push the reset button.

The Range Doesn’t Receive Power

This problem could be caused by a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. You should also check the fusing system. If there is anything broken, do some replacements and see if there is still no power. If that solves the power and the gas range still isn’t working, it could be because of burnt elements.

The Heating Element Has Burnt Out

It may sound scary, but doing this appliance repair is actually really easy as long as you know what you’re doing. The first thing to do is let the element cool down. You will have to remove it, so repairs should be done when the element isn’t heated up.

To remove the element in most ranges, you have to first find the heating element and the terminal block that connects it to the element well at the side. Lift the element and proceed with the removal of the metal drip pan located below. You will find two screws holding the terminal block in place. There could also be a push-fit instead of screws. Remove the screw or the push-type element and pull the element out.

Before replacing the element, make sure that it is the problem first. Get a volt-ohm-milliammeter or VOM and test the element using an RX1 scale. To do this, one of the electrical leads should be disconnected from the element. Clip one end of the VOM probe into each element terminal, and then look at the readings. If the reading is between 40 and 125 ohms, then the element is working properly.

The Heating Element Doesn’t Heat Up

This can be a problem with a burnt out heating element, and if that is the case, the steps on doing that particular oven repair should be followed. However, if you are not sure if the heating element is working and if you don’t have a VOM to use to test for faulty elements, you can use the working element and the malfunctioning element and put them in different terminals.

You will end up with the working element in the terminal block of the faulty element, and the faulty element will be on the working terminal block. Make sure that their edges don’t overlap.

Switch on the range and see if the working element heats. If it does, then the faulty element is indeed faulty and needs replacement.

However, if the working element doesn’t heat up, it could be the terminal block having problems. This may also be due to a faulty switch controlling the element.

If you want to do the oven repair yourself, be careful that you don’t forget to switch off the power to the gas or electric oven before doing anything. If the power is supplied through a different source, make sure to locate that and turn it off. If you have a gas range, turn off the gas in order to prevent leakage and potential problems.
