HANDY HINTGLAND PACKINGWhen using Gland Packing products, the use of specifi c fi llers, such as grease, graphite grease, tallow and other specifi ed materials serve two major functions:

• The grease provides lubrication at the shaft or packing interface

• The fi ller can act as a sealant to prevent leakage occurring though the interstices (narrow gaps) of the packing itself

See Chapter 17 for a full range of lubrication products.

GREENER WORKPLACEPIPE LAGGING FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCYPipes that are uninsulated may gain or lose heat, which increases the amount of energy required for the industrial system to work. Insulating system pipes to reduce heat transfer presents a cost reduction and an energy effi ciency opportunity. Pipes can be easily insulated using pipe lagging. Depending on the heat loss or gain occurring through the system pipes, the lagging may pay itself off in a short period of time.

SAFETY TIPGASKETSSteam duty is perhaps the most common and one of the most arduous gasket applications. It is diffi cult in part because steam is a powerful hydrolyser (able to decompose materials when reacting with water) capable of changing the nature of many polymers and fi bres.

An increase in pressure of saturated steam results in a corresponding increase in temperature. Gaskets under increased stress, that is higher internal pressure, in general require a reduced operation temperature.

Many materials harden in steam leading, in some cases, to embrittlement. This is especially applicable to asbestos-free calendered materials.

Low Temperature ConsiderationsThese conditions need to be met before determining suitability of materials at low temperatures:

• Gasket is completely dry when installed

• Flange is assembled at ambient temperature

• Flange and bolt materials are suitable for low temperature use

For safety reasons, a gasket should never be re-used.

PRODUCT INSIGHTWHAT IS A SPIRAL WOUND GASKET?Spiral Wound Gaskets (SWGs) are made of a preformed metallic V-shaped strip and a soft fi ller material wound together under pressure with an outer guide disc (carbon/mild steel).

The winding is manufactured in the form of a spiral with fi ller material (graphite) between the windings. The fi ller material fi lls the irregularities of the fl anges. The external guide ring has the function of centering the gasket in the fl anges and gives the sealing elements additional resistance against line pressure and excessive bolt torque.

Spiral Wound Gaskets are made for applications with high temperature variations (thermal cycling), and/or pressure variations, and/or fl ange rotation problems etc., and where gaskets with adequate residual stress (stress retention) and fl exibility are needed.

This style of SWG is a very economical way to seal your pipe work connections.

HANDY HINTBOLTED JOINTSBolted joints can work loose for several complex reasons, but a key cause is side sliding of the nut or bolt head relative to the joint. Bolted surfaces can slide sideways as a result of thermal expansion, vibration, impact or bending of the assembly, resulting in relative motion occurring in the threads. Pre-loaded bolts or nuts rotate loose, as soon as a relative motion between the male and female threads takes place. This motion generates a torque which is suffi cient to overcome the friction grip under the nut or bolt head bearing surface and negate the bolt preload which then rotates the screw loose.

PRODUCT INSIGHTEPOXIESEpoxies provide excellent bonding to a wide variety of substrates and exhibit superior heat and chemical resistance among common adhesives. They will cure at room temperature and can be rapidly cured at higher temperatures, but those epoxies cured with heat will be more heat-resistant and chemical-resistant than those cured at room temperature. General use epoxies have limited durability in elevated temperature environments.
