Oxygen: Crucial for life!
Concentrations above the 19-23% safe zone can result in an increased fire risk. Concentrations
below 19% can risk nausea, loss of consciousness and below 16% death.
Flammables: Anything which in the correct concentration can be ignited, e.g. Methane.
ATEX, IECEx & CSA certified so it can be used in areas where flammable gases are present.
CO: Odourless, colourless and with a similar density to air, carbon monoxide is the ‘silent killer’
Present in any process involving incomplete combustion of carbon fuel, naturally present in coal mines, and also
used in some chemical and steel production processes.
High levels can lead to breathlessness, chest pain, seizures, loss of consciousness, and eventually death.
The 4 Main Gases
H2S: Hydrogen sulphide is known for its ‘bad egg’ odour. High levels can lead to
collapse, respiratory paralysis, convulsions, loss of consciousness.
Produced during decay of organic materials, during oil extraction and pretty much anywhere
where sewage is being processed.

Other Gases the Gasman Detects:
SO2: This toxic gas is responsible for the ‘burnt matches’ smell and is a by-product of
copper extraction and volcanic activity. Used in the bleaching process in paper making
and as a preservative in breadmaking. By-product of cement manufacture.
Sulphur dioxide can irritate the respiratory system, especially during heavy physical activity which
is why it is dangerous.
NH3: Ammonia is a combination of nitrogen and hydrogen which form a colourless,
pungent gas. NH3 serves as the starting material to produce many commercially
important nitrogen compounds and can be used as a refrigerant or as a fuel.
Exposure to high concentrations of the gas can cause burning of the nose,
throat and respiratory tract and in extreme cases, can be fatal.
CO2: Carbon Dioxide is a naturally occurring colourless, tasteless, odourless gas.
It is heavier than air which causes issues in cellars where CO2 is commonly stored since it is difficult to ventilate.
Build ups of CO2 can displace oxygen which makes it an asphyxiant as well as toxic depending on its
concentration.

Other Gases the Gasman Detects:
HCN: Hydrogen cyanide is very toxic, even at very low dosages (4.5ppm / 0.00045%
volume) and has a ‘bitter almonds’ taste. HCN can be found in metal mining
processes, plastic production, PCB manufacture, ship fumigation and as a by-
product of fires involving synthetic fibres.
It prevents cells from respiring so symptoms range form dizziness to respiratory failure and
death depending on exposure time and concentration.
O3: Ozone forms naturally in the stratosphere, during thunderstorms and can be
manmade, ether way it has a blue colour and sharp smell.
If O3 is inhaled it can damage the lungs, resulting in chest pain, coughing, shortness of
breath and throat irritation.

Other Gases the Gasman Detects:
CI2: Chlorine is commonly known as a method of sterilising swimming pools and drinking water.
However, most chlorine is used in the chemical industry with typical applications including
bleaching, paper mills (bleaching pulp), disinfection, as well as within the plastics and chemical
Industry.
If chlorine gas is released into the air, people may be exposed through their skin, eyes or through
inhalation. Chlorine is toxic and if inhaled can prove fatal.
NOₓ: This is the term given to NO and NO₂ nitric-oxide and nitrogen-dioxide. Both can be
produced as a by-product of combustion processes within power stations or boilers, as well as
combustion cars and are common urban pollutants. NO2 is also a key constituent of nitrogen-
based fertilisers, while NO is also industrially produced for medical and food applications.
NO can act as an asphyxiant as it replaces oxygen in the blood and can result in loss of
consciousness. NO₂ can inflame airways and with prolonged exposure, can permanently damage
lungs.

H₂: Hydrogen gas is the building block of our universe since it the most common and simple
of all elements. It can explode with air, oxygen, halogens and strong oxidants, causing
obvious dangers. Hydrogen is widely expected to replace traditional carbon-based fuels. Gasman can detect H₂ in %LEL and 2000 parts per million (ppm) ranges, depending on
application and sensor specified.
HF: Hydrogen Fluoride is a colourless gas with a strong odour. When dissolved in water it
creates Hydrofluoric acid which is used in metal extraction, refining, glass finishing and in the
production of refrigerants, herbicides and florescent lightbulbs.
Both fluids are corrosive and can cause significant harm, irritation and burns when in contact
with skin or breathed in. Hydrogen fluoride is deadly.
F2: Fluorine gas is pale-yellow in colour and is used in the chemical industry, within nuclear
plants and has uses with military applications.
It causes irritation to any human tissue it contacts by reacting with it. It also reacts with all
other elements apart from argon, neon and helium.

PH₃: Phosphine is colourless and highly toxic, with concentrations at 50ppm proving fatal,
and far less concentrations causing fatality over an extended period.
It is used in the semiconductor/ microelectronics industry and as a fumigant against pests.
COCl₂: Phosgene is a highly toxic gas with the odour of freshly cut hay, commonly used
industrially in the production of certain plastics, dyes and acidic chlorides.
Known for its historic use as a chemical weapon it quickly irritates eyes, throat and lungs.
ClO₂: Chlorine Dioxide is a yellowish-green corrosive agent that is a common bleaching
agent used in multiple industries, and becoming more common in clean water purification.
It causes damage to any human tissue it touches as well as being flammable at higher
concentrations.
ETO: Ethylene oxide is colourless, with a small exposure limit over 8 hours of just 1 ppm.
ETO is used as a sterilant and fumigant and is also used in in the manufacture of ethylene
glycol, surfactants and other chemicals.
It can cause irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tissues as well as cancers and other long
term health defects.

Oil and GasThe oil and gas industry is a dangerous workplace, and
management of hazards a key focus. For the operator,
maintaining a high level of plant safety is a critical concern. The
most obvious and significant threat is the leakage and
combustion of explosive gas. With hazardous gases ever
present during production and processing operations, operators
are constantly faced with the risk of flammable and toxic gas
release and exposure. Gasman is ideal for detecting flammable
gases because it is easily configurable and durable.
Beverage & HOREGAThe Gasman can be specified with an IR CO2 sensor

When you work in difficult, harsh environments you need a device that isn’t
going to let you down. Its very easy to drop, bump, bang or scrape a portable
gas detector when working in tough situations. If its not up to the task it will
break, causing downtime while you arrange a replacement.
Gasman’s rubberised over-mould makes it easy to hold and grip while
protecting it from impacts and falls when dropped, making it a top choice for
workers in hostile environments.
Gasman is designed to work in harsh and hostile environments and has been
independently certified to IP65. This means that water doesn’t get in when
hosed with water and dust does not get in at all. Gasman is also approved to
work within -20⁰C to + 65⁰C

Gasman simply drops into the charger cradle to charge
Ensure the power supply is plugged in and switched on
Plug the charger connector into the rear socket on the charging cradle
Gasman fully charges in around 6 hours from flat, although you may do a
fast charge for a shorter period, which will enable quicker usage. Eg: ½ hr
charge gives 1 ½ hr usage
