David, You’ve been in the tax business for 20years. What’s the biggest mistake people makewhen filing their taxes?Poor record keeping! It is VITAL to keep good records.HavingALLW-2’s, 1099’s, receipts for all business purposes, charitable contributions, medical bills, taxes paid, vehicleexpenses for business - all of this can mean thousands ofdollars in lost refunds (or a greatly reduced bill). I preparedover 100 amended tax returns last year because peopledidn’t keep their records properly and the IRS caught them.

With all the tax software programs out today, whyshould people use a tax preparation service likeyours?NO software program can possibly know your tax situation. Each person’s tax return is different and, using a taxprogram is like buying clothes that says“one size fits all” (orworse, trying to be your own doctor!).To make mattersworse, the more complicated your tax return is, the morelikely your tax program won’t catch all the info you need tocorrectly prepare your tax return. I have seen moremistakes on“self prepared”returns than from all other taxpreparers and accountants combined. Most of the amendedtax returns I did last year were because someone tried toprepare their own return, forgot an important piece ofinformation and the IRS caught it.

As a small business owner, how can I be sure thatI’m keeping up to date on all the tax laws changes?Keeping in touch with your accountant, at least on a

quarterly basis, is STRONGLY recommended. There areHUNDREDS of tax law changes a year, any of which canmake a big difference to a small business owner.

How can I be sure that my tax preparer knowswhat they’re doing?Ask him/her about their experience and/or education. Forexample, I have been preparing taxes for 20 years now.Over those 20 years, I have preparedTHOUSANDS ofreturns during that time. I have an IRS-registered PTIN(preparer tax ID number). I take at LEAST 15 hours AYEARin continuing education and I get and review IRS updatesconstantly to stay on top of all the current tax law changes.

Many people DREAD dealing with their taxes.A lot ofpeople dont like the answers their accountant gives them. Ihave found that a lot of the problem stems from the lack ofcommunication with their accountant (and vice versa). Ifyou don’t like what your accountant says,GETA SECONDOPINION!While taxes are generally an unpleasant topic, Ithink it matters a lot if you have a good relationship withyour accountant. If you don’t have a good relationship oraren’t satisfied withyour accountant, find anew one!

t the beginning of a new year,we often considerwhat we hope it will bring, and createresolutions to help us become better versionsof ourselves. No matter how diverse ourresolutions are, at their core resides a desire to

seek and find happiness. Consider your resolutions – willreaching them lead to a happier you? Let’s focus on this:What is the secret to health and happiness? In my opinion, the secret to health and happiness doesn’t have to be anever-elusive thing that happens when we eventually becomeone with our favorite yoga pose, nor is it found in the 20thmile of a marathon. But it can be. That’s the interesting andexciting thing about embarking on a journey to find whatyou seek.Once you actually decide that you want health andhappiness, you start. That’s it. Start. Look at your resolutions– at their core, and begin. If you resolve to put better foodinto your body, to eat a more manageable amount of calories,to cut those carbs, start your new diet plan. If you want to

complete your first 5K,half marathon or marathon, or if youwant to simply give your mind and body the gift of fresh airby taking a stroll around the neighborhood, take the firststep. If you want to challenge yourself to step outside ofyour comfort zone, attend that yoga class you've beeninvited to.What I think you’ll find is the hidden secret toboth health and happiness lies in the adventure of thejourney itself. It is embedded in the pitfalls and in the wins –in the“almosts”and the“I’ve done its”. It is in the choice wemake to try. Resolve to begin.

offee is not usually thought of as a“healthdrink,”but a number of studies suggest thatit can be highly beneficial to your long termhealth.Researchers have found strongevidence that coffee reduces the risk of

several serious ailments, including diabetes, heart diseaseand cirrhosis of the liver.

Coffee contains antioxidants that help control the celldamage that can contribute to the development of thedisease. It is also a source of chlorogenic acid, which hasbeen shown in animal experiments to reduce glucoseconcentrations.

Caffeine, perhaps coffee’s most famous component, seemsto have little to do with it; studies that looked atdecaffeinated coffee alone found the same degree of riskreduction.

Larger quantities of coffee seem to be especially helpfulin diabetes prevention. In a report that combinedstatistical data from many studies, researchers found thatpeople who drank four to six cups of coffee a day had a28 percent reduced risk compared with people whodrank two or fewer. Those who drank more than six had a35 percent risk reduction.

Some studies show that cardiovascular risk also decreaseswith coffee consumption.Using data on more than27,000 women ages 55 to 69 in the IowaWomen’s HealthStudy who were followed for 15 years,Norwegianresearchers found that women who drank one to threecups a day reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by24 percent compared with those drinking no coffee at all.

So, enjoy that second cup of Joe!! It’s a “GoodThing.”

benefits since man first consumed it. The

important thing is to buy the highest quality

Rejuvenate those puffy eyesBlood and lymphatic fluids decrease while we sleep,

which leads to that unwanted puffiness in the morning. Bydoing facial massages in the morning, you can increasecirculation and flush toxins from the skin. For example, press on the top of the eye socket located

directly below your pupils and hold for a few seconds andremove. Move one fingertip-width to the right and repeat.Lastly, return to the center and move one fingertip-width tothe right and hold for another few seconds and release.Repeat on your other eye.

Consume a diet rich in antioxidantsThe best way to get a variety of antioxidants is to eat

foods that represent all colors of the rainbow. The brighterand richer the color, the more antioxidant power that foodwill have. Antioxidants defend our bodies from free radicaldamage, which slows the aging process. Think about whenyou cut an apple - it turns brown after being exposed tooxygen, but if you dip it in orange or lemon juice it stayswhite and is preserved. The vitamin C in those juicesprotects the integrity of the flesh of the apple! Imagine

what it can do for you!

Create thecoveted“Dewy Look”So many people

over use bronzer tocreate that youthfuldewiness every womanwishes for. Bronzersare great forhighlighting, contouringand creating a sun kissedlook, but they are notideal for the“dewy”appearance. Try using aprimer, such as BareMinerals BrighteningPrimer ($22). It has a pearly tint which will add a luminous, healthy glow.Additionally, it smoothes out skin complexionby combating patchy dryness, fine lines, and minimizes theappearance of larger pores. Follow with a tintedmoisturizer or a mineral foundation and a sheer, peachylip gloss.

Exfoliate your body atleast once a week

You don’t have to go buy fancy expensive body scrubsfrom the mall to achieve smooth, supple skin. Head toyour pantry and pull out the sugar or brown sugar andolive oil! Mix one cup of sugar with one-half a cup of oiluntil it is blended thoroughly. (it shouldn’t look like aslushy)When you get in the shower, allow your skinto soak in the warm water, not hot. Hot waterstrips our skin of its naturals oils which increasesdryness) to soften dead skin cells.Shut the water off and rub sugar scrub all over

your body in circular motions. Don’t scrub to

Let’s enter 2012 looking and feeling better than ever! Below are a few

health and beauty tips that have proven results. And will contribute to

hard, you can cause microscopic tearsin the skin. Turn the shower back onand rinse. When you finish, pat dryinstead of rubbing dry. The olive oilwill leave a thin film on your skinwhich will serve as a moisturizer.Massage the leftover oil into your skininstead of a lotion.

Get SERIOUS aboutan anti-aging regimenYes, it’s a good idea to start early.A good moisturizer is mostimportant. Read the label toensure it contains antioxidantssuch as vitamins C and E, antiinflammatory agents such as aloeand green tea, hyaluronic acid andceramides to boost and maintainskin hydration, and glycolic acidto trigger productions ofcollagen to plump skin cells andreduce wrinkles on the skin’ssurface. Serums are even morebeneficial due to their smallermolecular structure, thereforethey penetrate deeper andhave a higher concentration ofactive ingredients. Creamsand serums containingretinoid are the workhorsefor anti-aging. They alsoincrease collagenproduction, reducewrinkles, shrink pores, treat

acne and lighten brown spots.

Reduce StressMake sure you are getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night.Going to bed the same time each night and waking upthe same time each morning keeps our body clock ontrack. Try practicing yoga or meditation to calm down.Exercise is proven to reduce the amount of the stresscausing hormone cortisol. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise5 days a week. It is also a good idea to see your massagetherapist monthly to let her help you relieve tension.

Ditch sipping from strawsDrinking straws, over time, can cause lines and wrinkles

around the mouth just as easily as smoking does.Maintain your home skin care regimen with a facialJust as you would maintain a fabulous haircut by gettingtrims every 4-6 weeks, it is equally important to maintainthe integrity of your skin by getting a professional facialevery 4-6 weeks as well. An aesthetician will be able todeep cleanse your skin more efficiently than you can athome. If 4-6 weeks is not feasible, seasonal facials can bebeneficial as well.

Race Day Mud Run Tips:• Arrive early. There are several waves and you want to makesure your have your gear ready. Take time to stretch and find yourfriends and/or your team.

• Leave your costume at home. There are always a few crazyfolks wearing 3-piece suits and wedding dressings. Less is better:swim wear, tights, spandex is the way to go. Pulling extra weightis not the objective.

• Paparazzi. If at all possible, bring a spectator/camera person. You do not want to bring a camera with you into the mud, because once it’s muddy, the photos will be not be Facebookworthy.

• Old shoes. If you have shoes that you’re ready to toss anyway, wear them and bring an extra pair of shoes/flip flops with youfor the post party. Tie your shoes tight enough that you can’t slipthem off, but not so tight that they end up hurting.

• Bring a full change of clothes. If you do a mud run right, everything will be wet, along with dirty. You’ll be more comfortableand the person who drove you there will appreciate it.

• Bring a large towel or sheet. Preferably an old crappy oneyou can wipe the mud off. While you’re at it, bring a trash bag. It’s probably the easiest way to clean up.

• Leave the bling at home. No jewelry or watches.Did Imention it’s muddy and slippery?

• Have Fun. Your time? Really doesn’t matter. You shouldn’t beout there to run it as fast as you can.Don’t avoid the mud pits.ENJOY them. You’re there for a silly, fun, messy run. You’re goingto get filthy.Revel in it.

• A Good Attitude. Everyone will be in good spirits and there tolend a helping hand when necessary. Laugh when you slip andfall in the mud (you will) and give someone a hand if they needhelp over an obstacle (they will). You’re all trying to get throughthis together!

“We are always looking for unique

Anaerobic exercise: Strength training used to developendurance and increase size of skeletal muscles.Aerobic exercise:Any exercise that raises your heart rate.

Aerobic’s edge is calorie for calorie, cardio has a slightadvantage. You should be able to burn 10-12 calories a minuterunning or cycling.

Anaerobic’s edge (weight training) gives you a metabolic spikefor over an hour after a workout due to the recovery time ofthe muscles. For every 3 pounds of muscle you build, you’llburn an extra 120 calories a day---just resting! Maintaining themuscle takes more of your energy to sustain.

The winner between the two would have to be strengthtraining for more calories burned in a short amount of time.

So… if you can combine both together at least 3 times a weekyou are basically burning calories all the time!

30 minutes a day, 3 times a week (and you need to be walking,

or running to get the heart rate up) is sufficient for a hearthealthy, weight loss program. Any time you can cardio longer, with resistance or inclined, you are burning that much more!

10-15 minutes using weights (whether it be body musclemachines or free weights) 10-12 reps, going up slightly inweight increments by 5 to 10 lbs should efficiently challengethe muscle enough for you to burn the extra calories forweight training! (Not to mention that your muscles will beginto tone and harden…and that gives all muscle groups adifferent look!)

Arms look better in tanks, those legs look so much more tonein those bathing suits and that back looks awesome in thosesundresses and t-shirts and that core will become smaller andmore defined!

You can do this, I knowYOU can!The Plan: Get healthy...Stay healthy!

Challenged to fund and build three homes before the end ofJune of this year,Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County(Habitat-Gaston) is making the most of a bountiful bookdonation. Vince Delap, manager of Habitat-Gaston ReStore’sextensive“Book,Music and More”area, is making preparationfor a book and collectible sale to support the Habitat-Gastonbuilding program. Vince facilitated a recent donation of 40,000books, the largest single donation of product Habitat-Gastonhas ever received.

The donors,Dr. and Mrs. Fred Gachet (Shirley) ownedWonderland Books near Granite Falls,North Carolina. Foryears, it was a fixture for travelers on their way to and fromBoone, as well as local book readers and collectors. In late2010, the recession and declining health prompted theGachet’s decision to closeWonderland Books. “It was reallytoo much for us to handle (to maintain the store), but bookshave always been very important to us”said Shirley. The salecontinued into mid-2011,whenVince inquired with theGachets about making a gift of books. They asked how manyhe’d like. Vince said,“I was taken aback by the openness andkindness of the offer. I said“A few hundred?”and Shirleycountered“You can have more if you like.” That day in Augustof 2011,he and workers from Habitat-Gaston brought 2,200books back. “I was like a kid in a candy store”, recalledVince, who worked for many years with Borders Books. “The chanceto bring these titles into our store was really amazing.”

The Gachets were equally generous to other organizations.Vince kept in touch with the Gachets as the closing salepersisted. Upon hearing the concern over Fred’s health inShirley’s voice, he decided to be bold. One day,Vince said,“Shirley, you said you wish someone would make you an offerfor the whole business. I want you to feel comfortable saying‘No’, but… would you consider giving us (Habitat-Gaston) yourentire inventory?” Shirley laughed, but in a kindly way. “WellVince, let Fred and I talk about it.” Not an hour had passedwhen Shirley called back. “For you and Habitat,we’ll do it.”

Just months earlier, prior to relocation,Habitat-Gaston wouldnot have been able to make the request or accommodate the

affirmative answer. Blessed with spacious, newly renovatedfacilities,Habitat-Gaston received theWonderland Booksinventory. Their Jon B.Closson Housing Center, which hasnearly the same amount of square footage as didWonderlandBooks, will be the site of a 3-day book and collectible sale. Theevent will begin with a $5 admission“First Choice Premier”from 5 PM – 8 PM onThursday, February 16. It will continuefree and open to the public on Friday, February 17 andSaturday, February 18. Sale times will be announced closer tothose dates. Several books have sold in the ReStore since theacquisition, but the sale will still feature over 30,000 books, along with lamps, framed art and other collectibles.

Habitat-Gaston and the Habitat-Gaston ReStore are located at1840 E. Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia.Gifts of support shouldbe mailed to P.O.Box 1584,Gastonia,NC 28053. Forinformation about the Habitat-Gaston building program andsponsorship opportunities contact:
