† Welcome and Announcements

† Opening SentencesO God, you offer us healing; give us humility to see our need for it. O God, you renew our hope; lead our parched souls by streams of living water.O Christ, you raised up your friend; with your loving-kindness, raise us to new life today.

As the tower bell rings, may it call out to the city and the world that Central Presbyterian Church is worshiping God.

Please join in reading or singing those parts of the service printed in bold.

† Prayer of ConfessionGracious God, we confess that we have often closed our eyes to the love you give us so freely. We have our eyes fixed on the wrongs that we have endured in the past, the things that aren’t perfect in the present, and our anxieties about the future. Remind us of your presence with us now and help us to trust you.God of life, we confess that we have taken roads that have led us on paths of self-centeredness and even self-destruction. Forgive us for taking your gift of life for granted. Lead us back to paths that are life-giving, other-serving, and joy-filled. Amen.

(Silence for personal prayer and reflection)

Children’s Note:Being new to a place can be scary. Imagine having to go to a new school and making new friends? When a new person steps into our space, we should be really nice to them and find ways to make them feel welcomed and safe. In our Bible verses today we will hear about making a home in a new place and what is important is being friendly to everyone. You may never know they could teach you something new and fun!

Welcome VisitorsCentral is a community in which you can learn and teach, care and be cared for, love and be loved. You have a place here among this com-munity of faith. All vis-itors and newer mem-bers are invited to the Believing and Belonging class to explore what Presbyterians believe, how those beliefs in-form our life at Central, and what it means to belong in today’s world of competing interests. The next class is November 3rd and 10th at 9:45 a.m. in the Parlor. For more information, contact Deb Link, administrative assistant, at [email protected]

† Affirmation of FaithI believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

I got a crown up in-a that kingdom, Ain’t-a that good news!I got a crown up in-a that kingdom, Ain’t-a that good news!

About the stewardship banner, “Pixelated Holy Spirit”

My intention was to create a banner that would call attention to the primary purpose of Stewardship, that is, to give so that the Holy Spirit can do its work. The challenge was to come up with something dimensional to represent the Holy Spirit which is both invisible and infinite. Obviously, it would have to be abstract and symbolic. The Holy Spirit must have been working because PIXELS popped into my head. A pixel is a tiny part of a larger image. It could be done by cut-ting one inch pieces of fabric and ironing them on to a prepared grid. The method was settled, but what about the design. As it worked out, the design evolved from the random placement of pieces from dark to light. Rainbow colors were selected because they are the basic colors from which everything is made, including light. So now we have the symbolic representation of the invisible nature of the Holy Spirit, as well as the infinite nature. It is my hope that when you look at this banner, you will be reminded of the work of the Holy Spirit and what your contribution to Central Presbyterian Church could do to help in those areas where the Holy Spirit needs our help. We are grateful to John White for his help hanging the banner and to members of the Worship, Music and Arts Committee who cut and placed at least 5,000 tiny pixels. –Alberta Irwin

Night shelter volunteer information session on Sunday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. in Tull Hall

On November 1, the Central gym is transformed into one big guest room for 5 months, so that 90 neighbors experiencing homelessness will have a safe, warm place to sleep at night. For 39 years, the Central Night Shelter has inspired volunteers from across the city to serve a meal, spend a night, and offer personal hospitality for neighbors experiencing homelessness. We hope you’ll come and learn how to become part of this long-standing tradition of service. We think you’ll be glad you did. For more information, contact Wills Moore by phone (404-863-6511) or by email.
