Music Offerings at FUMC

The summer of 2019 has been a great season for us at First United Meth-odist Church. I know many of you have enjoyed vacations with your Families as we have with ours, and we have experienced beautiful and meaningful worship services in both our combined 8:45/9:00 service, and the 11:00 service all summer long. We are very grateful to all those who

have shared their gifts in music with us this season in all of our worship services. We are excited about a new season of music making and worship in Wilson. We have

been hard at work planning and preparing rehearsals, concerts, services, and other events for the 2019-2020 season, and we hope that you will find a place to be part of the wonderful music here, whether it’s as a participant in one of our groups or as a member of an audience or con-gregation.

Our concert series, Music at First, will begin with a concert by our friends, The Carolina Brass on August 30th at 7:00 p.m. We know how fantastic these exceptional performers are through their work with us on Scout Sunday each year, and we are thrilled to present this full concert performance. November brings the Eastern Youth Orchestra to us on the 17th at 3:00 p.m. This will be a very big event for our church and for the series featuring three orchestras of various ages of young players from the Greenville area, choirs, and some young instrumentalists from the Wilson area. We finish the calendar year of concerts with our own First United Methodist Chancel Choir and the annual Christmas cantata on December 20 at 7:30 p.m. and December 22 at the 11:00 service. Brochures with the full schedule for the year are available. We hope that you can come and enjoy these wonderful events with your family and friends.

Our choirs will also begin their regular rehearsals this fall. We are happy to once again offer choir experiences for adults who like to sing and play handbells as well as choral and performing opportunities for children and youth. Our Chancel Choir will begin rehearsals on August 28th at 7:15, and begin singing again for worship on September 8th. Our adult handbell choir, the Carillon Ringers, will begin their work together in rehearsals on September 4th at 6:15 in the music suite. The children’ choir and our new youth performance group (singing, handbells, drama) will begin on September 8th. The youth will meet at 4:30 in the music suite, and will be involved with all three services on a regular basis, presenting dramatic readings of scripture, offering solos and ensemble singing, playing handbells and handchimes, and taking part in other artistic and creative ways. Our children’s choir will meet for their rehearsals in the Blackburn building from 5:15 to 6:30, and will work on songs that they will sing for worship services throughout the season, and on a fun original musical for the Christmas season that they will present on December 15th.

We ask that you please prayerfully consider participating in one of these groups this year. No audition is required for any of our choirs, just show up to a rehearsal, and we will find a place for you to be included. All are welcome.

Thank you and God bless, Joel Gay

We will offer Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University this Fall on Sundays starting September 15 for 9 weeks from 5:15-7:15 p.m. Childcare will be provided. Financial Peace University teaches you how to manage money the right way! You will learn about saving, budgeting, paying off debt, investing, giving, and so much more. If Interested, please contact Krystal Baker at [email protected]. The 28th annual Volunteers in Mission (VIM) Barbecue Sale is scheduled for Friday, September 13. In the past, many have generously helped underwrite the expenses of the barbecue by purchasing a “pig” for $100. Unfortu-nately, the 2018 barbecue had to be cancelled due to Hurri-cane Florence, and plans to hold it in the spring met with scheduling difficulties. However, many of you who were 2018 “pig” purchasers allowed us to keep the donation for the 2019 barbecue. If you are not already a 2018 (now 2019) “pig” purchaser and would like to be one, or pur-chase additional 2019 “pigs,” please call or send an email to Bea Newton 399-9561 [email protected] or Ben Batts, 294-7447 [email protected] and indicate how many “pigs” you wish to pledge. You will be mailed an invoice/tax receipt later this month with an envelope for payment. If this is your first time, please also give your full name(s), address and phone number. Thanks for your generous support! Walk Thru the Bible - The Old Testament is coming on October 20th. For more information, to register and watch a video about how you can learn the Old Testament in one day, visit the church website.

OUR RESPONSE

Sending Forth CHRIST BE ALL AROUND ME Praise Band

Greeters for August 25th: Alyssa and Nick Fassnacht, Teresa and Jack Payne

We thank the Praise Band for their ministry this morning.

From the Pastor:

Some of you may remember participating in Disciple Bible Study here at FUMC. DISCIPLE started in 1986 in response to the growing aware-ness of how isolated and lonely people were becoming and how ignorant they were of the Bible. Bishop Richard Wilke and his wife, Julia, took on the task of writing a curriculum to meet this need. Today, over 3 million people around the world have studied DISCIPLE. Many graduates have given their hearts to Jesus. A good number of men and women have gone to seminary and entered the ministry.

Twenty years ago, someone recognized

that the lives of prison inmates could be restored; thus, Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries of NC was formed. The vision is about “Making disciples through Bible study to bring God’s grace to a hurting world.” To date, over 10,000 inmates, both men and women, have participated in DBOM.

This morning, congregations throughout

the NC Annual Conference and the Western NC Annual Conference will receive a special offering to support this ministry.

The Reverend Dr. Mark Hicks, the Director

of DBOM writes, “Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries (DBOM) stands at an exciting threshold! In addition to our long-standing work in North Carolina, DBOM is currently operating in Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, Louisiana, and Texas. DBOM continues to expand her work in these states and is launching a new initiative in Indiana! All of this is due to the support of faithful Christians like you. There is no end to what God is doing as more and more Christians reach out in love to the prisoner!”

Looking back at how many lives have been

transformed, Bishop Wilke says simply, “It has been a good thing!” Join me today in supporting this important work through your special offering.

Pastor Bob

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our

Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

PRESENTING OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “All My Life” Ralph Carmichael (Please sign and pass the attendance pad) All my life, through the good and bad of life, whether I should gain or lose, still I choose to live my life every moment, all for Thee, walking, oh, so close to Thee. While I’m learning every day, come what may, to trust in Thee. Take away the doubt that hides Thy perfect will. Give me faith, instead, and with Thy
