How can such persons, who have rendered unlimited service by explaining the path of self-realization in relation to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and whose explanations are given for our enlightenment with complete conviction and Vedic evidence, be repaid except by folded palms containing water for their satisfaction? Such great personalities can be satisfied only by their own activities, which are distributed amongst human society out of their unlimited mercy.

Çacémätä’smaternal affection for

Lord Caitanya

Çacémätä prays to Viñëu that the Lord’s body shouldn’t be hurt when He falls in ecstasy during kértana. Then she requests the devotees to be able to cook for her son

during His stay at Advaita’s house.

Çacémätädesires that the Lord

stay at Jagannätha Puré

Lord Caitanya expresses His concern that people might criticize Him for staying at home after sannyäsa. Then Çacémätä suggests that the Lord stay at Puré where she would get news about Him and He could also remain

aloof as a sannyäsé.

Conversation between Lord Caitanya and Haridäsa Öhäkura

Haridäsa was concerned that he can’t see the Lord as he can’t come to Puré. The Lord reassured him that He would

petition Lord Jagannätha.

The Lordspends a few moredays with devotees

Upon Advaita’s request the Lord agrees to stay for a few more days and Advaita holds a great festival everyday with

kåñëa-kathä, saìkértana and prasäda.

LordCaitanya departs for

Puré

Though the devotees including Advaita were lamenting, the Lord was unaffected and departed to Puré without

anxiety. He did this to set an example for a devotee to be neutral towards worldly affection.

LordCaitanya

Reaches Remuëä

Gopénätha’s puñpa-cüòä falls on Lord Caitanya. The servants of Gopénätha wonder at Lord Caitanya’s beauty and ecstasy. He

begins to narrate the story of Mädhavendra Puré.

TheStory of

Mädhavendra Puré and the Deities of

Gopäla and Gopénätha

21-34: Mädhavendra Puré reaches Govardhana and anunknown cowherd boy offers him a pot of milk and doesn’t

return to take the pot back.

35-51: Çré Gopäla (the boy who gave the milk) appears inMädhavendra Puré’s dream and requests him to rescue Hisdeity lying in the jungle. Mädhavendra Puré laments for not

89-104: Knowing about Gopäla’s appearance, people fromdifferent villages arrived and performed the Annaküöa

ceremony. Big capitalists from Mathurä presented gold, silver, garments, etc. A rich kñatriya constructed a temple.

Mädhavendra Puré initiated two brähmaëas and entrusted them with the daily service of Gopäla.

Puré and the Deities of Gopäla and

Gopénätha

105-109: After two years, Gopäla instructedMädhavendra Puré in a dream to bring sandalwood, as His

temperature had not yet decreased.

110-142: Mädhavendra Puré starts towards Bengal and onthe way initiated Advaita Äcärya. He reaches Remuëä,

sees Gopénätha and desires to taste amåta-keli sweet rice so that he may offer the same to Gopäla. But considering

his desire offensive, he leaves. However, Gopénätha steals one pot of sweet rice and instructs the priest to offer it to Mädhavendra Puré, who upon receiving it

became ecstatic.

143-153: The reputation of Mädhavendra Puré reachesJagannätha Puré before him. The devotees at Puré help him

collect sandalwood and camphor and gave him the necessary release papers.

154-169: Mädhavendra Puré reaches Remuëä with thesandalwood. Gopäla, knowing His devotee’s trouble, appears in his dream and instructs him to apply the

Madhya 5. The Activities of Säkñi-gopäla 87

LordCaitanya’sArrival atKaöaka

Lord Caitanya’s party saw the Varäha temple at Yäjapura village and reached Kaöaka and saw the Säkñi-gopäla temple. Nityänanda Prabhu

narrated the pastime of Säkñi-gopäla

ThePastime ofLord Säkñi-

gopäla

10-35: Two brähmaëas from Vidyänagara went for a pilgrimage andreached Våndävana. Pleased with the service of the younger

brähmaëa, the old brähmaëa promised before the Deity of Gopäla to offer him his daughter in marriage.

36-47: Coming back to Vidyänagara, the old brähmaëa revealedabout his promise to his family members, who then disapproved this and even threatened him that they would take poison and die if the

daughter was given to the poor brähmaëa. The old brähmaëa helplessly prayed to the Lord.

48-86: The young brähmaëa came the next day and the oldbrähmaëa’s son threatened him with a stick. The young brähmaëa then put this matter before the villagers. The old brähmaëa’s son

falsely accused the young brähmaëa, who then narrated what had happened at Våndävana. Upon everyone’s approval, it was agreed

that the old brähmaëa would offer his daughter to the young brähmaëa if Gopäla came to bear witness.

87-112: The young brähmaëa then went to Våndävana and appealedto Lord Gopäla. Gopäla said that deities do not walk, but the

brähmaëa argued that if a Deity can speak, then He can walk also, since He is not a statue anyway, but directly Vrajendra-nandana. Gopälajé agreed and travelled with him. After they reached the village, Gopäla bore witness and the old brähmaëa offered his

daughter to the young brähmaëa.

113-133: After the marriage, at the request of both the brähmaëas,Gopäla stayed in Vidyänagara and a nice temple was built by the

king. Later King Puruñottama-deva of Orissa conquered Vidyänagara and took Gopäla to Kaöaka and worshipped Him with devotion along

with his queen.
