The history of Apaches from Mari Ann, the ori-ginal owner, and a welcome introduction of the new owners!

In 1997 I made a personal decision to move to Puerto Vallarta. I took a year leave of absence from my position in Social Services and decided that Puerto Vallarta needed a Martini Bar, at that time there were none. After looking at over 20 storefronts, I decided on a location on Olas Altas. It was small but had potential. A design was sket-ched out on a napkin; bonuses were negotiated with the workers as an incentive to complete the workwithin two weeks. The project was finished in 2 weeks….much to everyone’s surprise!

However, the liquor license was denied. In those days, you were allowed a 10 minute sitting with the Mayor or Vice Mayor. After a conversation with the Vice Mayor, explaining my dilemma, She issued me a license. The name Apaches was cho-sen because I felt like a “warrior” after jumping through all the hoops. I also have a tremendous amount of respect for the Indigenous people. Not to mention, it begins with an “A”, which puts you

at the top of the list!

I met Endra 2 years later at table number “5” and we have been together for 17 years. Endra as the bartender has made a great deal of people happy over the years. Of course Apaches would not be the great place it is without our wonderful staff, Freddie, Chuy, Felipe, Alejandra, Julieta and most recently Ricardo. Also, Apaches owes its success to Andre, owner of Apaches Bistro. Andre’s culinary skills and de-lights have added a great deal to Apaches success. However, most important is his friendship, and the best neighbour anyone could ask for.

Endra & I would like to all of the people who have supported Apa-ches over the years and hopefully will continue to support the new 24

owners, Geoff and Ricardo. They are wonderful guys and will continue to keep the spirit of Apaches alive. Thank you for all the wonderful years of friendship.

A note from Ricardo and Geoff the New Owners:

It was in 1999 when I fell in love with Puerto Vallarta, my first time here as a tourist enjo-ying all the things tourists do. In the years that followed, my passion for this city grew to the point of creating a dream to live here one day, one we all have aspired to at one time

or the other.

In 2013, while on holiday, I met my current partner Ricardo. The deal was sealed. I went home to Winnipeg that winter, making the decision to leave my job as a Psychiatric Social Worker and make Vallarta my new home. Over countless trips, like many, I developed great friendships with Mari Ann & Endra and since then, Apaches became our home away from home. Great times spent there over the years and many lasting friendships were made.

Like everything, things change and Mari Ann informed me of their intention to move back to Canada. With that, the deci-sion was made that Ricardo & I would carry the torch for them upon their departure. It is truly a gift that we were given to have this exciting opportunity and we embraced it with open arms. We look forward to carrying on the spirit of Apaches, a place where new friends meet and old friends gather. We will miss the girls terribly and wish them nothing but happiness and suc-cess in the years to come. We are already looking forward to seeing them during their future vacations back to our lovely Va-llarta. We thank you both for this great opportunity. We will make you both very proud!! Ricardo & I would also like to thank ever-yone for their support, our great

staff, Freddie & Alejandra and our super neighbours over at Apaches Bistro, Andre, Chuy, Julieta & Felipe. We could not do this without you. To all our loyal customers, old and new, we remain committed to providing you with great service and a place you will conti-nue to call your “home”. Again, we thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you all back at Apaches very soon.

VALLARTA PRIDE 2016 ATRAE A GRAN CONTINGENTE DE PRENSA

More than a twenty international jour-nalists and representatives from such well-known companies as The Advocate, Travel and Leisure, OutTv, Conde Nast, BoysMx, Alaska Airlines and Bent TV, from as far away as Melbourne Australia and Quebec Canada, attended the press trip for Vallarta Pride 2016

The Bar Hop press trip on May 26, 2016 organized by Tim Wilson, owner of Gay Bar Hopping and GayPV Magazine in-cluded a full schedule of the best of the gay scene in Puerto Vallarta. According to Gustavo Rivas-Solis, director of Latitudes International, the city’s public relations firm, this press junket was “the largest ever to visit Puerto Vallarta for any event.” Villa Savana an extraordinary 15 room luxury villa provided delicious welcome hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as a kick-off to the evening organized like a Gay Bar Hop tour. Following a photo-op at The Pulpito Drag Derby, members of the press were feted by Fusion Gourmet before hop-ping to several bars including---Blondies PV, Reinas, Wet Dreams, La Noche and

CC Slaughter’s. The tour also included a visit to La Alhambra, the official pride opening party, one of Puerto Vallarta’s newest upscale bars.

The Saturday Pride Press Conference at Almar Resort May 28, 2016 included the Pride Organizing Committee, para-de Grand Marshalls Myriam Montema-yor and Idan Matalon, Supermana and officials from Alaska Airlines for the first time. Alaska Airlines was the major spon-sor for Vallarta Pride 2016, marched in the parade and presented the winners of the 2 Alaska Airlines raffle ticket winners.

“Gay Puerto Vallarta put her best foot forward,” said Wilson. “I know from fee-dback the press we sponsored had a fun filled, positive image of our city and will bolster our position with the gay market, a most important tourism niche not only for Puerto Vallarta but for Mexico.”

Our all volun-teer group comprises citizens of Mexico, the United States and Canada, who all collaborate in a process that takes a ho-meless dog from the streets of Mexico, to a foster home in Puerto Vallarta for recovery and spay/neuter, to a Guardian Angel volunteer who trans-ports the MexPup from Puerto Vallarta’s airport to an airport in Canada or the US, to a Mex-Pup foster home, and finally to the (no-longer-homeless) MexPup’s new forever family. LAS ANIMAS (L.A.D.R.A) Las Animas Dog Rescue Association (LADRA – which also means “bark” in Spanish) was formed by Brischa and Ted Borchgrevink in 2012 to provide care, shelter and rehabilitation to dogs rescued in PV area and to match them with adoptive families. Las Animas ope-rates with the aid of donations, volunteers and friend organizations.They are always in need of funds, leashes, dog toys, cra-tes, and dog beds, towels and blankets. The price includes a boxed lunch with choice of sandwich and a doggie bag for your buddy. It’s worth seeing even if you do not have a dog. This is a great way to meet other animal lovers. All monies raised are donated to PEACE Animals. They conduct high volume, mobile, spay and neuter clinics for companion animals in Jalisco and Nayarit. This pro-gram is grass roots and reaches out to those that cannot afford to go to the vet and the service is free. They typically set up the clinic in colonias at homes, bu-sinesses or government buildings. The clinics run three and a half days and the vets have sterilized over 140 animals in that time frame. FIRST GAY COUPLE MARRIED IN VALLARTA CELEBRATES AT

CASA CUPULAChristian and An-gel were happily surprised they were to be wed by Puerto Vallar-ta Mayor Arturo Davalos, among the first same sex couples married in Puerto Vallar-ta! The happy couple’s wedding ceremony can be seen here.

All of us at Casa Cupula are especially proud because Christian worked here about seven years ago, as our Sys-tems Manager. Around that time that he met Angel, and they have been together since.

Both were surprised when they were the first couple married (shortly fo-llowed in the ceremony by two wo-men), and that the Mayor himself was to preside. Their ceremony, a civil ceremony here in Mexico, was also on local television and featured on the Mayor’s Facebook page.

Gay weddings have been in the works in Mexico since last June, when the Mexican Supreme Court declared unconstitutional laws that blocked same sex marriage. Since then it’s been step by legal step, in-c l u d i n g changing the law in our state of Jalis-co, until fina-lly the proper forms were available to carry out the m a r r i a g e s here in Puerto Vallarta last week.

Christian and Angel joined Casa Cupula guests at our Friday Night Warmup Party on April 22, where they were congratulated by guests and staff, and joined in a first dance for everyone. They haven’t had time to organize a formal event, as Christian is headed to the

US for a new job this week without Angel who will be joining him as soon as possible. That demons-trates a very important reason why marriage equality is so important, practically speaking.

Upon hearing this news, we were delighted to offer a brief but ro-mantic Honeymoon package as our gift to the happy couple in our

Sayuri Suite. It was quickly decorated by our romance-loving staff with rose petals, candles, swan towels and more flowers as part of our

WHY PACO MY MINI PIG AND NOT AT DOG OR CAT?

FFirst I want to say that it has been an adventure since I the decision to have a mini pig to be my companion and friend. After analyzing all pros and cons, I told my boss about the idea and his first reaction was A MINI PIG! Rea-lly? After the shock, he told me that I should get informed and learn everything there is to

know about mini pigs, which I had already before speaking to him. Mini pigs are the smallest pigs, they are very smart, extremely clean, hypoallergenic, don’t smell and they never eat and pee or poo in the same place.

I can honestly say that they are smarter than dogs and cats, which

I love, but the intelli-gence of mini pigs has surprised me. Paco Adobo has already learned some tricks. I have to confess that I also learn something new about Paco Ado-bo day after day. He is very social, I take him every day tothe office and he just sits there with me during my floor time, he goes to

showings and he is my companion in my Open Houses on Fridays.

The farm recommended to walk him at least 3 times a week and to bathe him every 10 days with warm water, they also told me to be extra careful during the first 5 months with the changes of temperature. Mini Pigs special diet consists of zucchini, baby formula, special pig food, water and electrolytes, red apples and cucumbers.
