ROSIE’S

RAFFLE Rosie Gipson

NAME BADGE DRAWING Cindy Welchko could have won $90 in the name badge drawing; however, she was not present to win because she and her husband live back East. FYI - Lucky Cindy’s name badge was also drawn in October 2014 for $40 and also in May, 2014 for $40 and, of course, not present to win. What are the odds of this happen-ing!!! Next month's drawing will be $100.

50-50 DRAWING Raul Rodriquez won the 50/50 raffle prize of $85, while the Club received $85. However, Raul has won twice in the name badge drawing – Aug 2013 he won $10 and then Feb 2013 he won $30. Congratulations!

Thank you, Rosie

Skydome Construction Update

Over the past several weeks geotechnical firm Hayward Baker has been drilling micropiles in the Skydome. As of Monday, March 2 they have completed 13 micropiles. The extremely cold weather (despite being inside) has slowed progress somewhat. Drilling was originally planned to be completed by late March and the team is still hoping to hit that date. The complete restoration process is still on target to be finished by early July.

Check out Project Manager Zach Massey of Scott, Murphy, Daniel Construction's update online. If you are planning a visit to the Museum in the next couple of months you can still observe the work being done through their Plexiglass viewing window. Additionally, they have 6 of the "Great 8" Corvettes on display in the Exhibit Hall through May 10.

Our Car Show April 18, 2014 is coming along very well. Registrations exceed last year’s Show. Our 50th Anniversary will be celebrated at our Car Show with the tee shirt shown below. Each pre-registered entrant will receive a shirt. And all volunteers signing up to work our Show will receive one. (Please let Linda ([email protected]) know your size if you haven’t already. We have your size if you noted it on the Volunteer sign-up sheet at the last meeting. Sizes are S, M L, XL, and XXL.)

Also, our 50th will be noted at the Show by “50 for our 50th”. 50 trophies will be awarded. You can sponsor a trophy for $25 which will then have your name/dedication on the plaque as the sponsor. If you, your neighbor, or business wishes to sponsor a

trophy please let Chuck Hammer know by the March 18 cut-off.

Santiago Chavez has volunteered to coordinate chairs, tables and pop-ups. If you can loan the Car Show any tables or pop-ups, please let him know. Chairs will come from ours at WIN.

Linda Tully has been distributing raffle coupons. If you need more please contact her. Our raffle is a highlight of our Show. Prizes from sponsors and club members draw interest from all Car Show participants. It not only raises funds for our charity but gives the Car Show participants another focus in anticipation of award.

Please bring your raffle/silent auction donation to the April 2 General meeting.

The registration form and Show flyer are on our web site, www.thevetteset.com. Please encourage friends, neighbors, associates, etc. to come and celebrate our 50th Anniversary and 40th Car Show with us.

NCCC NEWS - WAIVER,

WAIVER! WHO'S GOT THE WAIVER?

With The Vette Set car show coming up next month, I'd like to remind all TVS members that it is most important that everyone sign the NCCC liability wavier either at the April General Business Meeting or at the car show itself. Whether you act as a volunteer or "good will ambassador/spectator" PLEASE sign the wavier. All car show participants must sign the wavier also.

PLEASE sign the wavier using the name that the NCCC knows you by. Do not use a formal legal name if you used a nickname to register with the NCCC. It is most difficult to determine if someone truly attended the show if there is a name mix-up.

"NCCC Business Manager Jack Wilson said the insurance FAQ has been updated with a minor change on the main NCCC web site at http://www.corvettesnccc.org He reminded everybody that non NCCC members are NOT covered by the insurance even if they are a member of an NCCC club and are attending an NCCC sanctioned event. He said some clubs are questioning the need for NCCC’s insurance since they don’t host racing events. Jack said they have very few claims related to racing events. Almost all of them happen at car shows. Drive and dine events are covered while the club is driving as a group, which is a situation we can all relate to." Thanks to Cliff Harris, Region Membership Director, for the preceding.

Ficquettes turning into the museum parking lot

RONALD REAGAN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY/MUSEUM THURSDAY FEB 12, 2015

If reelected, I promise a Corvette in every garage

Carl Cewinski organized a run to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. This visit was a treat for club members because it featured “Amazing Automobiles: The Ultimate Car Exhibit.” These cars are on loan from the Petersen Automotive Museum’s collection while the Petersen Museum is being refurbished before it reopens in December 2015. Most of these cars come from The Petersen vault and are not seen by regular museum goers.

As tradition dictates, we met at the Krispy Kreme Donut parking lot where, once again, former club president, Carl, addressed the group in a presidential manner and laid out the plan for the day.

After we purchased our tickets, we entered the museum and were greeted by a portrait of President Reagan and Steve McQueen’s Jaguar XJSS (SS for Super Sport). This car was affectionately called the “Green Rat” by Steve and was the brainchild of Briggs Cunningham. We took a group portrait and then headed off through the museum. Also joining our group was Pat’s brother-in-law, Bob, from Santa Paula and Pat’s golfing buddy, Matt, from Torrance.

A Presidential Visit by The Vette Set

On February 12th, a group of Vette Setters and guests made a mid-week run to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley . The visit was to see President Reagan artifacts and a special exhibit of "Amazing Automobiles: The Ultimate Car Exhibit“.

The cars were on loan from the Petersen Automotive Museum and were separated into themed galleries for Hollywood , Heads of State and Historic Cars.

In the Hollywood Gallery, cars used in television and movies, as well as owned by celebrities, were on display including:

· 1956 XKSS owned by Steve McQueen (one of only sixteen built, due to a Jaguar factory fire)

· 1971 DeTomaso Pantera owned by Elvis Presley (which still has the three bullet holes from when he shot the car....it had continuing starting problems.)

· Batmobile driven by Michael Keaton in “Batman” (1989) and “Batman Returns” (1991)

· 1946 George Barris custom Ford used by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in “Grease” (1978)

· 1966 Ford Thunderbird driven by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in “Thelma and Louise” (1991)

· 2001 custom Honda Roadster driven by Devon Aoki in “2 Fast, 2 Furious” (2003)

·

In the Heads of State Gallery, rare, iconic and classic cars are on display including:

· Pope John Paul II’s 1998 Cadillac Papal Parade Phaeton

· 1942 Lincoln Limousine (ordered the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor and used by Presidents Roosevelt and Truman)

· 1938 Packard Super 8 Parade Phaeton used by Juan and Evita Peron, President and First Lady of Argentina

In the Historic Cars Gallery, rare, iconic and historic cars were displayed, including:

· 1981 Gold-Plated DeLorean DMC-12

· 1952 Ferrari 212/215 Inter Spyder

· 1913 Mercer Raceabout owned by Phil Hill, only US Formula One Champion (1961)

· 1939 Bugatti 57C Atalante

After viewing the cars we ate lunch in the Reagan Country Cafe located on the museum grounds. Seeing these unique automobiles was worth fighting commuter traffic on the 405 freeway.

Before heading for the car collection, we touched base with some of the iconic presidential exhibits that we had seen on previous visits. Of particular interest was the oval office which was created at the library. Reagan said the ceiling was too low, the room was modified to make it accurate by lowering the floor. A podium with teleprompters was fan as well as Air Force One exhibit.

In the Heads of State Gallery, rare, iconic and classic cars are on display including: Pope John Paul II’s ‘98 Cadillac Popemobile; Roosevelt and Truman’s ‘42 Lincoln limo; Juan and Evita Peron’s ‘38 Packard Super 8 Parade Phaeton. These cars were displayed in the Air Force One area. Included in the group was Khrushchev's ‘62 Chaika that looked like a ‘56 or ‘57 Packard (apparently Russian copies were not limited to aircraft). Also on display was Saddam Hussein's Mercedes-Benz 600 that had numerous dings on the doors indicating a cramped palace garage or someone in his administration had an anger management problem.

Before leaving we looked over the Simi Valley, green from recent rains, remembered the Berlin Wall and said goodbye to Ronald. To optimize his outing, Sharon and Pat went home via Topanga Canyon and PCH but paid the piper with coastal rush hour traffic. After viewing the cars we ate lunch in the Reagan Country Cafe located on the museum grounds. Seeing these unique automobiles was worth fighting commuter traffic on the 405 freeway.

ANNUAL SWEETHEART RALLY SATURDAY FEB 14, 2015

The Start This year the rally entailed a cruise through LA’s West Side beach communities. Since there was no rain, we met in the Kaiser Hospital parking lot in Culver City at 10 AM. The weather was very warm and before the start, everyone was happy and light hearted. This was about to change.

Venice: Cool architecture and rides over the canals

The Journey Things heated up heated up in many cars with the first right turn. Later, marriages were further tested by trying to find the “do not enter _____ only” signs and the “what should you do with your sweetheart” clue.

Lunch and Awards at Tully’s

Post Rally Observation Possibly, like us, there were others that missed the (minuscule, see picture) 'Do not enter ______ only. (2 yellow signs)' clue in Venice. This picture confirms that such signs do exist, I no longer doubt the Rally committee. I'm afraid some cars from our club ended in the "Canals Neighborhood Watch 'HOT' list“ from driving endlessly through the neighborhood trying to find these signs. It has been a couple of weeks since that fateful day; personally I no longer fear the possibility of a knock on my door or the doors of our club members from the Venice police department. Raul J. Rodriguez

BOWERS MUSEUM CHINA’S LOST CIVILIZATION SANTA ANA, CA TUESDAY FEB 24, 2015

China’s Lost Civilization Four couples (Tullys, Weimers, Hammers, & Cowleys) met at Krispy Kreme before traveling to Santa Ana to have lunch at Polly’s Pies, followed by a visit to the Bower Museum. The featured exhibit was ‘China’s Lost Civilization: The Mystery of Sanxingdui.’ “During the summer of 1986, construction workers accidentally uncovered an astounding cache of more than 200 ancient jades, weapons, burned animal bones, over 60 elephant tusks, monumental bronzes, and a life-sized statue of a nobleman at Sanxingdui, about 24 miles outside of the Sichuan Province capitol of Chengdu. Most of the contents had been intentionally destroyed and deposited in two large pits. This chance discovery has become one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century and has forced scholars to rewrite early Chinese history. The objects date to about 1200 BC, a time when it was thought that the cradle of Chinese civilization existed 745 miles to the northeast on the Yellow River in China’s Central Plain region.”

Linda found a scarf in the gift shop. Being an anthropology

major, she was excited about the exhibit but it finished second to her new scarf.

Art of the Pacific Islands After seeing the exhibit from China, we were exiting the museum when Rob saw an ongoing exhibit called Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands. I don’t know if Rob’s curiosity came from wanting to learn about other cultures or from fond memories of seeing native tribes in old National Geo- graphic Magazines. Which ever it was, it turned out to be a very interesting exhibit. The artifacts are from “three cultural regions of Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. Particular focus is placed on New Guinea, land of the headhunter, and the rich artistic traditions infused into daily and ritual life.” One item was a human tooth necklace made from 203 human incisor and canine teeth sourced from 60 to 100 individuals. (I hope each person woke up with a quarter under his pillow for each donated tooth. It’s too bad club president, Jerry Clement, a retired dentist, wasn’t on this trip to appreciate the necklace. Marcie later confided that he would have appreciated it because he is definitely an “incisor man.”)
