A murder docket and inquest have been opened, and an investigation is under way. Cases such as this are a big prob- lem in the Helderberg, says Hilda Lourens of NGO Ukhukanya, which provides support for victims of domestic violence. She says the organisation, which works with men, women and children, received 18 reports of domestic violence last month. It dealt with another 40 in January and February. “These are only those that are re- ported to us. If I had to guess, I’d say this is merely a tenth of what is re- ported in our area,” says Lourens. And it’s not just women and chil- dren – almost half the cases person- nel dealt with over the last month involved the abuse of men. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna of the Strand Social Crimes Unit esti- mates that over 40 protection orders were served in March. These aren’t issued in every case of domestic vio- lence, so there could be more, he says. Fifty incidents of domestic vio- lence were reported in Gordon’s Bay in March, according to the Gor- don’s Bay police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Nico Beukes. He says nine of these were criminal cases. “There has been an increase this year,” says Beukes, who men- tions another 30 incidents reported since January. “But it’s because people are becoming more aware and reporting the incidents.” Lourens says these are not the only areas with a high incidence of domestic violence, with Macassar and Lwandle in particular being problem areas. Constable Mthokosisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle po- lice, confirms the high rate of do- mestic violence, but declines to di- vulge the number of reports the sta- tion has received owing to a national lockdown on the publica- tion of crime statistics more than once a year. The official statistics do not include a category for domes- tic violence; these cases are grouped under assault or murder. Lourens says abuse is not only physical – Ukhukanya often deals with cases of emotional abuse. Emo- tional abuse can trigger a response of physical abuse, she adds. Gama clarifies that domestic abuse involves mistreatment or controlling behaviour by one part- ner towards another in a relation- ship, which could be between cou- ples, ex-partners, family members or a house mate, among others. Reinette Evans, director of Rape Crisis Helderberg, says domestic abuse is often related to substance abuse. Lourens adds that abuse has be- come a cultural mind-set, and chil- dren are often affected by domestic violence. Children who grow up in an abusive home often perpetuate the cycle because they know noth- ing else. It is here that education and awareness come in. Evans says do- mestic abuse can be prevented with education, and “helping mothers to teach their sons to respect women and vice versa. Often the boys just copy what their father does.” She adds that women need to know their rights, and the fact that they can get an interdict against their husband or partner. Gama stresses that cases should be repor- ted to the police, who can help ob- tain a protection order. However, “the protection order is only the start – it simply sets the boundaries in the relationship”, says Lourens. She adds that the biggest chal- lenge in fighting domestic abuse is people who drop charges, or apply for a protection order and take no further action. Gama says women often withdraw the charges because the perpetrator is a breadwinner, or with the excuse that the incident was a misunderstanding. To find out more, or to report do- mestic violence, visit your local po- lice station or call 10111, or contact Ukhukanya on 021 850 0061. Erijahville-mans werk saamNICOLE MCCAIN

Local rugby clubs leap into battleThe 2012 club rugby season in the WesternProvince kicked off on Saturday, much to thedelight of the players and fans who have beenanxiously awaiting its start.

Club rugby in Western Province is huge, with a total of 157 club matches played thispast Saturday.

Among the local clubs in action this pastweekend were Helderberg, who played Good-wood in their first Super League B clash ofthe season and came away with a convincing46–6 win and 5 points.

Helderberg lost their Super League A sta-tus last year, and needed to get out of theblocks in a hurry to move back to SuperLeague A status next year.

Goodwood has moved up to Super LeagueB from the Premier A, and will find the goingtough.

Other Super League B matches last week-end included: Bellville vs Hand & Hearts;Brackenfell vs Pniel/Villagers; Collegians vsPrimrose; and NNK vs Kuils River.

For results on these and all other WP clubrugby matches go to wpclubrugby.co.za.

One of the favourite teams in PremierLeague A is St Georges, who kicked off theirseason with a match against Paarl. They nar-rowly lost 35–31.

Elsies River played Hamlets; KraaifonteintookonLanga;andScottsdenebattledRangers.

Sir Lowrians kicked off their PremierLeague B season with a crushing 66–13 winover Milnerton, scoring 10 tries and earning5 points in the process.

They should win this league comfortablythis season and get promoted to the Premierleague A in 2013.

Strand United and Macassar are two otherlocal clubs playing in this league. StrandUnited played Van der Stel and won 20–15,while Macassar played Silvertree and alsowon their game, with 22–16.

Othermatches in this leaguewere:Stellen-bosch Coronations vs Eerste River; and La-gunya vs Franschhoek.

InDivision1,StrandplayedNorthernsandbeat them 27–13 ,while Raithby lost 9–3 toMannenberg.

Masiphulelo 24–23 in their Division 3 match.ReadDistrictMail for full reports andmore

photos of some of these matches.Herman Abrahams, the deputy CEO of the

Western Province Rugby Football Union, says he’s pleased to report that the season’sregistration process was conducted withspeed, and a minimum of bumps and bruises;hethanksall theclubsthatrespondedintime.

“At the last WP Union meeting, four clubswereacceptedas fullmembersof theWPClubRugby family,” he goes on to say. “They areSimondium, Pêrel United, Young Brothersand Imiqhayi. With these four clubs joiningthe WP Club Rugby family, our total numberof clubs has increased to 90.”

Two clubs, Simonsberg Region and theSunday League, were also accepted as associ-ated members of the WP Union. “In total, 10rural teams form part of the Simonsberg Re-gion, whilst the Sunday League consists of22 teams. To all of these clubs – welcome tothe family.

“The WP Union will lend a hand to theseclubs concerning aspects like coaching, refe-rees and applications to the Lotto Board.”

Abrahams adds that, with the petrol pricebeing sky-high, travel expenses have becomea huge factor for clubs – so it’s fantastic newsthat the WP Union, with the cooperation ofGolden Arrow Bus Services and the NationalLotteries Board, will help a huge number ofclubs with their travel expenses.

“All the clubs from Premier League A andB, as well as Divisions 1 to 4, will share inthis project’s benefits,” he says.

Abrahams goes on to say that last year anumber of workshops were held to teachclubs how to maximise their use of social me-dia. “As a tool to communicate with theirmembers, supporters and the public, the so-cialmediaareveryimportant. Iamsuretherewill be a lot of tweets and Facebook items go-ing around this year.

“Don’t forget to add the hashtag #wpclu-brugby into your Saturday tweets so that wecan all follow the full club rugby actionstream as you tweet.

“Club rugby followers are also invited towatch the programme on club rugby everyWednesday at 21:00 on Cape Town TV.”
