GCE CHRONICLES
From the
Principal’s Desk
Change is the only stable thing in the world. When it was
conventional to publish
only the formal annual edition and the
bi-annual student centered edition, GCE Chronicles h
as come up
with a change. This is a
special cover
on GECOFEST 12.0 (As
Never Before)
, the annual intra-college cultur
al fest of the
college.
I always strongly be
lieve in acco
unting and reporting for each
and every even
t that happens in an institution. In that reg

I‟m much proud about the Editoria
l Team which has come up
with an extra-ordinary ef
fort to throw light on the effo

in by the final year students every
year in organ

cultural eve
nt.
This edition would be a testim
ony to prove t
hat GCEians are a
lot more th
an just „Engineers‟;
to say aloud
with pride, “We
cannot be under-estim
ated anymore”; to declare
that GCEians
are good at cr

; and to exhibit th
e „lead-from-the-
front‟ attitude of a
final year stud

e institution.
I wish all success
for the 2012 passout
s that were the heart
and soul of GECOFEST 12.0 and the GCE Chronicles E
ditorial
Team for recogn
izing their efforts.
Dr. R. S. D. Wahida Banu
executed by the III Years, which pirated
the hearts of the audience, remained as one of the top
moves. If you wonder what it is like, well... it resembles the
billboard still of Jack Sparrow set atop Black Pearl in
‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie. The dance troupe
meticulously formed a big ship and its captain climbed on
the top of the huge Human Ship and ordered the slaves. The
Cruise Formation was striking and soon the audience burst
into rapturous applause. Then, the pirates split up and made
their next move. (Picture shown below)
Surprised?! It's something
much similar to the illustrious Transformers where a car
turns into a super-advanced robot. Well, it is one of the cool
dance moves, but so intricate, executed on the Grand Stage
at the final event-Western Dance. The artful transform,
comprising seven guys, was executed diligently with quick
movements, analogous to the Car-Super Robot transform
and there stood The Giant Scorpion. Now, with the cheers
louder than ever, the transformed Scorpion strode over to
make audience go wild. As a final step, the Scorpion
detonated and blew up into seven dancers who executed the
intricate and tricky transform.
The GCEians made their mark in the Eastern Dance as well.
The ebullient participants with their sublime outfits and their
contemplative use of properties like basket, handkerchief,
pot, plate, entertained the whole crowd with a culturally
traditional touch. This event comprised multiple forms of
dance like Bharatnatiyam, Karakaatam, Oyilaatam,
Mayilaatam, and Dandiya, which made it vibrant.
The third year girls with their cheerful and colourful
performance picked up the first prize. Following this, the
third year boys with their energetic performance won the 2nd place. Last but not the least, the second year girls, with their
diversified performance, bagged the third prize.
Well, this was the humorous version of the main stage event
-Adapt Tune. Here, a group of guys or girls has some space
as its dance floor to showcase their dancing abilities. The
circular space was demarcated by the crowd around, which
cheerfully enjoyed the performances staged. With buckets,
shawls, handkerchiefs and all sorts of equipment/props used
as dance items, the stars of the events sure brought up tons
of laughter and fun. The students of Civil and Mechanical
department came up with the star performances.
This innovative event was held to test the creative forte of
the participants to the complex mixture of songs- both old
and new. The event had limited entries but still drove the
crowd crazy. One could find the whole auditorium dancing
with the participants and encouraging them. All styles of
dance like hip-hop, folk, contemporary etc. were showcased
and the crowd demanded more and more. At the end, the
thrilled audience recorded exhilarated comments.
This was another creative event that brought emotional
rendition on stage. Each year had two groups of participants
and as the name suggests, they had to choose a film and
depict it through their dance and drama. The performances
left the crowd shell shocked. They were a combination of
choreography, comedy and humor. The story dance done by
third year boys for the film Sooriyavamsam transformed to
Naariyavamsam was highly entertaining, toppling down the
crowd with loads of laughter.

The music club of GCE is a cluster of composers, singers,
and instrumentalists of various enthusiastic combinations to
cheer their pals.
This instrumental ensemble provides a platform to bring to
the limelight many fabulous singers to sing along with
guitar, keyboard, drums and other instruments, so as to make
the song sound just like the original. Also many mix and
matches were compiled for the crowd to feast upon. This on
stage team showed a variety in genres, bearing in mind the
taste of the audience.
Dev Anand, Dhinesh Kumar
Benjamin Samuel, John pinto
Kanimozhi, Deepa, Dhivya, Krithika, Vaishnavi,
Vijayalakshm, Madhan, Praveen, Ashok
This event proved to be the best event to prove unique
voices and talents. The chosen song ought to enthrall the
crowd and make them dance with the melody. Even
Madonna would have to queue up for her chance, as the list
of singers was up in good number. Jeeva Vignesh 3rd year,
Mechanical who sang ‘UyireUyire’ song from Bombay, was
crowned in lime light as the best singer. An awaited moment
was when Nyoingam Konyak, a GCEian from Nagaland
climbed the stage to make the audience dumbstruck with her
mesmeric voice and faultless Tamil.
This event starts in a way to break the hypnotic silence
maintained in the Auditorium during solo singing, by the
beats of the instruments. The most played instruments are
Guitar, Drums, and the Keyboard .The bouncing beats just
thrash our minds, stir our hearts and enliven the place. This
instant makes the way for many musicians to grow under the
shade of the music club. Dinesh Kumar, final year,
Mechanical was shining in the spot light as the best
drummer for his stunning performance. Other participants
include Hamsa Rani, John Pinto. The ravishing host
performance given by Benjamin Samuel, simply stunned the

‘The aim of modern art is to represent not the outward
appearance of things, but their inward significance’. As the
saying goes, participants were expected to depict a vibrant
theme in the painting. Two people were allowed per team.
Concentration and observation are monumental for any
artist. This event was a test for these significant characters
among the budding artists. A piece of art would be shown
for 30 seconds and the participant who portrays the same(as
close to the original, as possible), is declared the winner.
‘Art on face is the index of the mind’- goes the slogan for
the FACE PAINT event.
Students painted with eloquent themes and gave a tough
competition to one another. Two teams per year were
allowed.
Brushes could be splashed anyway down on the chart. The
attractive look and design matters the most in this
contest-rather than the theme. The most creative and
captivating painting would be declared the winning art. Two
teams per team were allowed.
An endowed artist can bring out a best painting even without
a brush. A person with the flair for making a wonderful
artwork, using any material other than the painter’s brush
becomes the winner.
The number of materials used adds up points.
To revive the bygone usage of painted pots and celebrative
village moods, GECOFEST ’12 had set a platform this time.
Participants were asked to portray the given the theme on
the pots provided. The auditorium appeared to be
celebrating PONGAL again with all new painted pots during
the event.
The material sounds the same but it is not childish anymore.
Participants need to make attractive, theme based models
with the china clay provided.
Logo designing is the most crucial aspect of graphic
designing, and creating ideas for great logos are not easy.
This event was the test of ability of GCEians to become
successful graphic designers in the future.
Participants painted attractive logos for the GECOFEST’12.
The mantra of the event was- Every block of soap has a
lucrative model inside it and it is the task of the designer to
discover it. Students carve a piece of good art out of the
chunk of the soap that is provided.
Appealing models carrying good message becomes the
winning carve.
Splashes of color and paint alone don’t make art. In
GECOFEST even the array of alphabetical elements takes
up an entrancing art form. Students should rewrite the given
alphabet in the most appealing manner.
Collage is like a hall of mirrors. Every direction you look,
you see something different and visually stimulating.
Participants brought out excellent themes with mere
newspaper cuttings.
There is a lot to be gained from painted portraits. A true
portrait is always fuller and richer than simply an image on a
flat surface. GECOFEST really turned out be a hard core
artistic extravaganza. Luring portraits were submitted by the
budding techies at the end of the event.
The event turned GECOFEST more celebrative and
traditional. Rangoli is a fabulous hand drawing art of
India .It is an art of colors. It brings out the imagination and
creativity of the participants.
Mehendi adorns the hands. Innovative designs coupled with
amazing hand work made Mehendi the most enjoyable
events of GECOFEST.
Line is the most powerful device of drawing. Line is so
versatile – you can do a fine, tight, closely observed
description or simply put a line around an idea – like a
cartoonist. ‘No shades’ is the thumb rule of the event.
Cartoons are meant to be to be funny. But they are a
powerful tool in the democratic society. Students drew a
meaningful cartoon for the topic provided.
An art on the canvas cloth is more extravagant than a work
on the chart/piece of paper. Beautiful customized Indian
canvas paintings made the auditorium bear the look of an art
gallery.
From Kalams to Sachins, all the famous/favorite
personalities were brought down to the GCE in ‘hard
copies’. Eminent leaders were portrayed in the given charts
by the student.

The theme is anti-ragging. The first half goes with a normal
college life in which seniors rag their juniors from their first
day. When it gets intense, the seniors are caught by their
senior, who explains them why ragging was prohibited in
the college. When they found about a suicidal junior in the
same room they were staying, the story dramatizes. The
seniors are haunted by the ghost of the dead junior. But they
don't stop ragging. But the best part is in pre-climax, in
which all three will be haunted by the ghost and sets perfect
platform for the climax. In the climax, all three goes to
psychiatrist, who advises them not to rag. But they continue
to argue that it’s done only for interaction. The end is sure to
thrill the viewers with an unexpected twist.
Bottom Line: This ghost will haunt you for sure…

A nice message backed up by a strong story line. A magic
ring which gives you whatever one wants-quite a dream
accessory for everyone. And the story travels with the
protagonist coming across such a stone. He gets himself
some money, new sets of costumes and enjoys all of its
power.
But this doesn’t last long for there is a mystery along with
that ring. What happens next makes us realize that luck is
short-lived and temporary. Being an out of the box thinking
for a short film, the director deserves accolades. The
screenplay might have been better for it is slightly on the
slower side. Honest acting by the cast and a decent job on
the camera.
Bottom Line: Worth a watch for sure, for luck is a passing
cloud here.

The title might mislead the viewers for a comical short film
but it has a mature, social message in it. The need for water
and a world without its presence is showed in a clear way in
this film. It is commendable that the youth of today do have
concern towards the society and its various problems. The
protagonist realizes the importance of water in the latter half
of the film after he has a nightmare about a water-scarce
world. The hero’s journey from a carefree user of water to a
careful human is pictured in a great way.
Short Film
Just A Minute being its expansion is all about the dance of
the tongue in co-ordination with a sharp thought process,
followed by proper use of words and grammar. You can’t
afford to make a mistake, because it takes the mike off you
and the person pointing out your mistake gets hold of it.
This process goes on and as the right to speech gets
transferred, the JAM GOD looks upon and decides what to
do, how to do and when to do. Game goes on for as many
minutes as the GOD wishes and the player with most time of
speech gets the glory.
Even Jack Sparrow, one of the wittiest protagonists, might
find this difficult. One minute you have, to convince the
other sailors that you are the only one, worthy enough to
escape from the ship. Can’t find a reason? Well, you are just
doomed to drown along with the ship. Bon Voyage!
All the participants are aboard on an imaginary ship, which
is about to sink. But there is only one lifeboat…only one
participant can escape.
Each participant can assume the role of any personality he/
she chooses, and will have to speak on his/her ability, to
defend only he/she is the only eligible person to escape.
One of the most exciting and funniest events in
Gecofest’12… Speak with your tongue because you won’t
have enough time to seek the help of your brain. Crazy,
senseless topics which might leave you spellbound are
aboard. Expect the unexpected.
Participants will have to speak for one minute without any
preparation on the topic chosen on the spot.
Have a trip back to the olden days, the days before the
existence of language, where only actions expressed
thoughts. This can be your very personal experience of such
a situation. Prepare yourself to convince your teammates.
Make them understand your actions. Make sure your actions
do speak louder than words.
This is the ultimate endurance test. The strong people-both
physically and mentally, get to test their strengths by
hunting every nook and corner of the campus trying to find
the clues and sort them out for the treasure. 3 teams, 45
brains, 90 hands, all looking for a single treasure.
Milliseconds of thought do make a difference in this
ultimate battle of the human body.
Absolutely nothing. Do whatever it takes to find the treasure
using the clues hidden in the college campus without
damaging them.
You think you are in line with all the worldly happenings
around you? You really think you have got the aptitude to
have news at your fingertips?? Well, this will certainly test
you. It’s a test for your Alma Mater.
Unlimited entries per year write a preliminary written test
which is a multiple choice question paper. The top 8 teams
to qualify in the prelims get to enter the grand finale and a
chance to eternal glory.
Agatha Christie, James bond 007, Aalvarkadiyaan, are some
of the greatest spies in fiction. If you think you have got the
metal and wisdom to crack a case, try it out here. The
ultimate mysteries, fishy cases all laid out for you to solve.
Crack it with pin point accuracy, and you are the day’s
Sherlock Holmes.
Written event
It is much like Sherlock Holmes, with just the nature of the
questions making the difference. Many secret codes are
waiting to be unravelled.
The all time exciting conventional debate where it is the
complex are of putting strong, innovative thoughts in words
and striving to bring about a change. You either speak for,
or against the given topic with not just words but with the
fire, the fire to destroy your opponents and leave them
speechless and to search for something to say. The
command in your voice, the sense in your words should stir
hearts. A good speech has the potential to bring about the
change. This event is a platform to reveal your commanding
oratorical skills.
Battle of words. Rules of a conventional debate are
applicable.
ELA Events
Is your brain able to find out some reasons to convince your
customers to buy an umbrella with holes? Or maybe a clock
that runs backwards? Or a Translucent pair of jeans? Any
idea how to market a T. Rajendar Halloween mask? If you
had enough, this is just a trailer. Ad Zap has got a lot more
crazy stuff to be sold and a lot of funny reasons to be stated.
Let the wild side of your brain take over. Zap in your ads!
This particular event is quite serious, designed to give the
students a real-time experience on how interviews of their
future will be. The final year students become the HRs and
the students are the job-seeking candidates. Everything from
the angle of your tie to the blackness index of your shoe
should be nascent perfect. Make sure the diction in your
voice, the dignity in your walk and the vision in your eyes
state your goal undraped. Any kind of judgement is possible
in this tricky courtroom, where each and every word out of
your mouth counts and it’s bound to make a difference. Face
the endurance test.
Have you ever thought how the famous personalities handle
their spotlight in front of the press people? Especially when
they are amidst controversies!? It’s quite difficult to put
yourselves in their shoes, but that is exactly what this event
did. Get ready to be a personality for some time and face the
queries thrown at you by hungry info-seeking news
reporters. With every word you say interpreted in whatever
possible ways, be careful and choose your words wisely, for
they can send you from fame to eternal shame. Power Star
was one particular personality which got a lot of attention.
This is the intellectual battle of words through the evergreen
game of scrabbles. Make sure you and your teammates hit
the maximum points.
For those who think nonsense, this is the perfect place to
know the magnitude of your non-sensitivity. Can you throw
up the most stupid answers to equally idiotic questions? It
all depends on the craziness in your thought process. Tune
your brains to make it think as stupid and as humorous as
possible. If it does, then you are Mr. Non-Sense Unlimited!
The event will have a question paper consisting of humorous
and ridiculous questions…to which equally humorous (and
crazy) replies will have to be given by participants.
More the humour, the more is the probability of winning.
Vulgarities and obscenity will not be tolerated and will lead
to immediate disqualification.
These three events are the best places for the passionate
writers to show case their cascade of words. The first event
is where the writer is expected to conjure up a story with the
use of the given sentence. Verse-form is a typical poetry
competition where the topics will be given and the
Shakespeare in you comes into play. Essay-Writing allows
you to construct a formal, systematic and an influential
essay on the given topic.
History of ourselves, our country and the world are all
equally important, and need to be known. Many events have
changed the course of the world forever. A small
imagination of how it would be if such an event had not
occurred is what this event is about. Let your intellect take
over to analyse and comprehend a situation as a result of a
non-occurrence of a particular historical event. Speak out
the world you have imagined in the stipulated time.
One of the serious and intellectual event organised I n
Gecofest ’12. The 5 permanent countries of the UN Security
Council would be represented by 5 teams and the sixth final
team will be representing India. The delegates representing
these countries meet to discuss upon an issue of worldly
importance to decide on the further actions and pass a
resolution. With poignant analysis and sharp points in their
arguments, this event is sure to bring out the diplomat
within.
