OPTIONS EXPLAINED

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

In Years 10 and 11, students have an element of choice which allows them to personalise their Key Stage 4 Curriculum. There are a number of subjects which are mandatory for every student: these are

English Literature and English Language, Maths, Science, PE and RS/PSHE.

The remainder of each student’s timetable is composed of two choices from the English Baccalaureate

groups and three option subjects.

Students will achieve a minimum of eight GCSEs or equivalent qualifications.

Recent Policy Change by the Department for Education (DfE)

The new policy is that school performance will be measured on the average GCSE point score for students across a wide range of eight subjects. This is known as the Progress 8 measure. Progress 8

will benefit students as they now have a broad platform upon which to build their Post-16 choices.

Progress 8 means that students will follow the new curriculum model:

The two core subjects of English and Mathematics

At least three subjects from the Sciences, Geography, History and Modern Foreign Languages

Up to three GCSEs or BTECs in other academic subjects

All students will take Science, either Combined, BTEC or Triple. To be eligible for Triple Science,

A small number of identified students will be guided towards a more vocational route of qualifications

that best suits their needs. These include BTEC Science, ASDAN courses and College.

GCSE Combined Science provides a foundation in Science and prepares students for further study of Science. For students opting to take Triple Science, all the units of

Science is a qualification that all employers use as a benchmark of success.

electricians, teaching and working with animals.

GCSE SCIENCE - OPTIONS

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE:

TRIPLE SCIENCE

The course is taught as three separate Sciences; Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students who choose this option will study all three. Biology GCSE Biology helps students get a good understanding of the world of living things, from how a basic cell works to the complexities of an ecosystem. Chemistry GCSE Chemistry gives students an insight into the chemical processes, reactions and transformations that impact on our daily lives, from the products we use, the buildings we live in and the food we eat. Physics GCSE Physics encourages students to gain knowledge and practical experience about the underlying principles of how things work – from electrical circuits via X-ray machines to fairground rides. EDEXCEL HISTORY

Why History?

History gives you a knowledge of local, national and international societies which enhances

your understanding and appreciation of both the past and contemporary world.

History develops the skill of selecting, evaluating, organising and presenting information through a variety of mediums. These are not just literacy skills but are essential work and life

skills.

One of the attractions of History is that it allows a person to be flexible and does not narrow

future career choices.

British Depth Study :Early Elizabethan England, 1558-88

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE: The GCSE course in Geography aims to give students a knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live and an awareness of the issues and challenges that face the modern world. The specification is topical and provides students with a knowledge and understanding of the social and economic influences that will affect their lives today

and in the future.

The units studied are the following:

Unit 1: Living with the Physical Environment

COURSE OUTLINE:

This course concentrates on the food preparation and service aspect of the hospitality and catering industry.

Through practical lessons you will study food preparation, cooking and presentation.


This course can be studied as a single award in GCSE Catering or a double award in GCSE Catering and Hospitality. Year 10 – Theory and practical based cooking skills. Alongside these skills catering will consist of a controlled assessment (20%). Hospitality will consist of a controlled assessment (60%). Year 11 – Theory and practical based cooking skills. Catering will consist of a controlled assessment (40%) and a written exam (40%) in the summer. Hospitality will consist of a written exam in the summer (60%). The student will have to purchase any ingredients used, financial support can be offered to support families on a restricted income.

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE:

In Graphics you will be taught the basic principles of line, form and colour and their application in designing, the use of drawing equipment, set squares, drawing boards, compasses etc. You will use a range of techniques and ICT including CAD ( 2D Design and SolidWorks) to generate and develop, model and communicate design proposals. You will also learn to match materials and components with tools, equipment and processes and use these safely in both two and three dimensional work.


Year 10 – You will undertake 4 different design and make projects as well as other theory and practical tasks. Homework will be related to the projects the students are involved in or specifically to do with the exam syllabus.

Year 11 – The controlled assessment element is a major project, forming 60% of the overall grade. The students will be given 40 hours to complete a comprehensive design folder and product. The student will have to purchase any materials used, and work will be submitted for assessment. Students will take a written exam forming 40% of the overall grade.

COURSE OUTLINE:

You will learn to design and make products with creativity and originality to meet the needs of clients and consumers.

You will be able to select and use tools and a range of materials and processes to produce quality products.

You will learn to consider the conflicting demands in designing and the solutions to technical problems in the design and manufacture process.

You will learn to use tools and equipment safely and to work accurately and confidently.

You will be encouraged to learn about technological advances and use CAD/CAM in your work and to consider environmental and sustainability issues.

GCSE D&T - TEXTILES

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE:

Students will learn a range of skills including sewing, surface decoration and manipulation of fabrics. This will lead to a major design and make task in year 11.

In year 10 students will be given opportunities to explore and experiment with a wide range of fabrics and techniques via different focused practical projects.


In Year 10 students will be assessed through three different design and make projects. Homework will be related to the projects that students are involved in or specifically to the exam syllabus.

In year 11 the students are assessed on their production of a major project which consists of design work and manufacture and is worth 60% of the total mark. The other 40% of the mark is arrived at through the final exam.

Students will have to purchase materials used in their year 11 project.


This course will enable the student to carry on and study Textiles at A level and at degree level. GCSE Textiles will also give the student a firm foundation to study for an apprenticeship or study fashion at a further education college.


At least 25% of all jobs in the country are linked to the Textile industry. Britain leads the world in many areas of fashion and textile design and manufacture.

Jobs could include textile designer, fashion designer, retail fashion buyer, manufacturing textiles, weaving, printing, working with smart materials, garment and clothing manufacturing. Large parts of the chemical industry rely on fiber and yarn production.

GCSE RELIGIOUS STUDIES

COURSE INFORMATION This course maintains and promotes the social, moral, spiritual and cultural aspects of education, whilst encouraging students to consider this side within themselves. This course will enable students to question ideas about the origins of humanity and the world. It will enable students to analyse the nature of God and question the practice of belief. All of this will ensure students are able to make their own minds up about the

relevance of Religion within the world and most importantly within their own lives.

AQA Religious Studies A 8062:

You must take assessments in the following two components:

Component 1: The study of religions - beliefs, teachings and practices in Christianity and Islam. For example - worship, festivals, pilgrimage and beliefs

about God; what impact do these beliefs have on a believer’s life?

Component 2: Thematic studies - The existence of God and revelation, peace and

conflict, crime and punishment and human rights/social justice.


Fully assessed by examination in June 2018. You will sit two examinations each lasting

1hr 45mins.

In today’s society people are expected to know about world issues and be able to make sense of the world around them. GCSE Religious Studies will enable students to make critical links between concepts and explain these coherently to those around them; being able to communicate effectively is a key skill required for nearly EVERY job. A wide range of professions including: teaching, nursing, social work, police, journalism and law. The skills taught are investigative and analytical and you will be

GCSE ART & DESIGN - FINE ART

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE:

The GCSE course aims to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to Art and Design. Students will demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary Art and Design practice

and be able to produce Artwork that embraces a range of ideas and techniques.

The course aims are to develop:

creative and imaginative ability and the practical skills for engaging with and for

communicating and expressing original ideas, feelings and meanings in art, craft and design

investigative, analytical, experimental and interpretative capabilities, aesthetic understanding

and critical and enquiring minds, with increasing independence

cultural knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design and of the media and

technologies used in different times, contexts and societies

personal attributes including self-confidence, resilience, perseverance, self-discipline and

commitment.


This is an exciting and rewarding course. 60% of the overall mark is based on your coursework, which includes all the work you complete from the beginning of year 10 until the end of year 11. The other 40% of marks is gained from an externally set assessment, which will be completed in the spring term of year 11. During the assessment you will be given an externally set assignment, you will have 20 hours to complete research, development and experimental ideas during lesson

time before completing a final piece in controlled examination conditions for a further 10 hours.

You will need to ensure you come to each class with the correct equipment, and that you are prepared to work independently at home. All work is part of your controlled assessment, but

regular homework will be set to support your lesson based work.


Yes, after successfully completing the GCSE you can move onto an A Level course in Art and

The GCSE Art course will provide skills for a career in all Art and Design disciplines, such as

COURSE OUTLINE:

At GCSE, Media students have the opportunity to study a range of theories and concepts that are integrated into the practical work. It is an academically challenging, creative and dynamic course that informs young people about our contemporary, media-rich society. Key concepts are Media language, Institutions, Audience and Representation explored across all three platforms: print, broadcast and e-media.

GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE:

The traditional route for those students wishing to further their sporting studies. The course is split roughly 60:40 between practical and theory aspects of sport.

Students will study anatomy and physiology, sports injuries and their prevention and sports nutrition.

Studying this course will enable you to become increasingly physically competent through being actively engaged in a range of physical activities, and becoming increasingly effective in your performance in different types of physical activity and roles such as player/participant, leader and official. You will develop your ability to engage independently and successfully in different types of physical activity, and develop and maintain your involvement in physical activity as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.


There is a final practical exam with an external moderator, one piece of externally moderated coursework, an analysis of performance oral exam and a final theory exam.

GCSE MUSIC

COURSE INFORMATION

GCSE music will provide a contemporary, accessible and creative education in Music with an

integrated approach to the three main elements – performing, composing and appraising.

GCSE music will enable learners to explore performance and composition with a focus on their own instrument and offer opportunity to explore new instrumental skills. Through the various genres, styles and eras contained in our Areas of Study they will explore musical context, musical language, and

performance and composition skills.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Areas of Study 1 - My Music-Students focus on their chosen instrument and develop performance and composition skills. They are required to perform one solo and one ensemble piece of their choice.

Students can sing for their performance work.

Area of Study 2 - The Concerto through time- Students look at the development of the concerto from 1650-1910. The focus will be on instruments, the development of the orchestra, and the relationship

between the soloist and the orchestra.

Area of Study 3 - Rhythms of the world. Students study the traditional rhythmic roots from four geographical regions of the world. India and Punjab/Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East/Africa/

Central and South America.

Area of Study 4 - Film Music- Students study a range of music for films including music that has been composed specifically for a film. Music from the Western Classical tradition that has been used within a

film. Music that has been composed as a soundtrack for a video game.

Area of Study 5 - Pop music- Students study a range of pop music from the 1950’s to the present day.

Throughout the course students develop their performance and composition skills and are able to

access new state of the art I-macs where they can develop their music sequencing and ICT skills.

COURSE INFORMATION This course is designed to inspire and enthuse learners to consider a career in the performing arts sector. It will give learners the opportunity to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the Performing Arts. You will develop your skills in a range of contexts, and explore the possibilities of

You will take a total of 4 units to complete this qualification. The number of units taken is will equate

to 120 Guided learning hours over the duration of the course.

COURSE OUTLINE:

There are four units in the BTEC:

Unit 1: Principles of Science

Unit 2: Chemistry and Our Earth

Unit 1 is externally assessed through a one hour examination. It represents a maximum of 25% of the overall assessment.

The BTEC still continues to be predominantly portfolio-based applied learning. Students provide evidence for each assignment briefs for Units 2, 3 and 4 which are structured in such a way that learners are given the opportunity to achieve Distinction, Merit or Pass at Level 2.

vending machines), jobs in retail business and how to measure performance in retail businesses using key performance indicators.

Unit 8- Recruitment and selection( which is also internally assessed)

This unit will introduce learners to the variety of job roles existing within businesses as well as the various functions that are performed by

individual roles. It also focuses on the types of organisational structures used in businesses. Students will take on various role play using key

recruitment documents including person specifications and job descriptions to ensure that they recruit the best people for specific job role They will also have the opportunity to complete an application and an interview for a specific job role.

Finally students will consider how to prepare for interview and employment and the necessary steps for career planning by producing your

own career development plan.

DETAILS OF ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed continually through practical project work, coursework, written assignments, time-constrained assignments and

through giving presentations.in addition to this; a 1 hour online examination will be externally conducted for unit 2 only. Students can

COURSE OUTLINE:

Unit 1 – The Music Industry – Developing an understanding about different types of organisations that make up the music industry and the type of work each undertakes, who is

responsible for what role, and learning why and how things are done.

Unit 2 – Managing a Music Project – Students will plan, develop and deliver a live concert/event as a team. Looking at factors that affect the content of a concert and the technical and

logistical requirements and restraints.

Unit 3 – Music Recording – Students will learn techniques to produce their own live recording that will be mixed to create a finished product. They will learn about equipment and

technology used in their process.

Unit 4 – Music Sequencing – Students will experiment and explore a music software package in order to enter their chosen song and manipulate it using a variety of features and

COURSE OUTLINE:

The rationale for all qualifications in the BTEC First suite in Engineering is to:

● inspire and enthuse learners to consider a career in the engineering industry

CORE SKILLS/ASDAN

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE:

This programme is for identified students requiring additional support it is a flexible modular based programme aimed at entry and level 1 courses.

The framework enables students to select modules appropriate to their needs and future goals, these may be undertaken independently or as part of a BTEC course alongside their peers or as part of an ASDAN short course which could count towards a COPE qualification.

The focus is on life and vocational skills including functional skills in Maths and English and ICT. It may incorporate additional intervention and support through the success maker programmes they have been undertaking in year 9.


All assessments are course work based with modules being banked by the students. It is a means to progression rather than a qualification in itself, although functional Maths and English & ICT are optional.


Yes it is intended as a pathway to further, more focussed level one courses.


Based on your choices of modules it will prepare you for further education in the vocational area of your choice.
