THE PROBLEMThe in ormation and personal technol-ogy revolution o the past decade hasvast potential or application on thebattle eld, in public sa ety and otherareas where mission e ectivenessdepends on secure communication,in ormation sharing and collaboration.Wearable computing and communica-tion technology can provide crucialreal-time awareness, decision supportand tactical intelligence in the harshestenvironments.

Up to now, the e ectiveness andsuccess ul application o wearablecomputer technology or dismountedapplications has been limited by equip-

ment size, weight and reliability. In addition to weight and size limita-tions, other actors such as battery li e,connectivity and expansion potentialand cumbersome user inter aces, havenot met the demands or use ul de-ployment in the eld.

THE SOLUTIONThe General Dynamics Itronix GD300is a small wearable computer thatcombines rugged computing, GPS anddata communication into a devicedesigned to improve situational aware-ness and communication with tacticaland commercial networks. Using amodular, open-system technology, therevolutionary GD300 easily accommo-dates current and uture applicationsor mission-critical eld users such asmilitary, public sa ety, SWAT and rstresponders.

When designing the GD300, GeneralDynamics Itronix examined thechallenges and problems and built a

solution around them. The result isa ully-rugged, lightweight, 8-ouncecomputer that runs the open-sourceAndroid TM operating system plat ormwith its extensive so tware applicationsupport. The GD300’s display is large enoughor com ortable viewing and is easilyreadable anywhere—even brightsunshine (per MIL-STD-3009 and testedor MIL-L-85762A). It’s wide- ormat800 x 480 pixel resolution exceeds thato most commercial handheld devices, but unlike consumer products, its resis-tive 4-wire touch screen can even beoperated wet or with gloves.

SMALL SIZE, LOW WEIGHTWeighing less than 8 ounces, the

GD300 is designed or orearm orchest-mount use via special mountingkits and acilitates proper air circula-tion in the most extreme conditions.

ALL-DAY BATTERYThe GD300’s lithium-ion battery o ersall-day operation, alleviating the needto carry spares or change batteries onthe job.

SUPERIOR GPS PERFORMANCEAND QUADRA-HELIX ANTENNA

The GD300’s high gain, quadra lar-helix antenna, combined with ully-in-tegrated technology, provides superiorultra-sensitive GPS required in mission-critical situations such as public sa ety, military and emergency rst response.

ANDROIDTM OPERATING SYSTEMPLATFORM: OPEN SYSTEM,OBSOLESCENCE-PROOFThe GD300 utilizes the latest advancesin Android TM open system architectureto leverage both military and com-

mercial applications. Many customso tware packages are available and avibrant Android TM developer commu-nity represents a robust open-sourceso tware resource.

The General Dynamics Itronix GD300Not to be compared with down-sized desktop and notebook computingtechnology, the GD300 is a user-oriented rugged, wearable computer designedto meet the portability and usability demands o users on-the-move.

WHY ANDROID?The GD300 uses the Android TM mobile operating system that’s based on a Linux TM kernel. Initially championed by Google ® and now administered by the OpenHandset Alliance ® (openhandsetalliance.com), Android TM is truly open, easilycustomized and extended to include emerging technologies while providingexcellent per ormance with minimal hardware. Android TM has quickly becomethe most popular operating plat orm or commercial smartphones, resulting in alarge, dedicated developer community and reduced development time and costs.

GD300 - A New Era in Rugged, Wearable Computing

The GD300 represents the rst o anew generation o lightweight, wearable yet rugged mobile computerscapable o providing reliable real-timesituational awareness and radio-ag-nostic communication or military andcivilian users alike.

Ultra-sensitive GPS, eliminatesuncertainty, saves time and allowsthe speed and precision requiredin the eld. Ruggedness allowsoperation under the mostadverse conditions, without theear o damage or ailure. Useo commercial o -the-shelhardware and open systemsso tware means easydeployment anywhere, a vastresource o available applications

and quick development ocustomized solutions.

Per ectly suited to meet evolvingrequirements within public sa ety, theGD300 brings military technology andruggedness standards into the com-mercial space. The fexible Radio Inter-ace Kit (RIK) accommodates military orcommercial communication systems asrequired by the job. Small and light-weight, the GD300 can be worn on theorearm or chest, stowed away in any

pocket, or mounted anywhere easilyreachable. Providing a per ectbalance o open systems technology, high per ormance, fexibility, andeconomy, the obsolescence-prooGD300 represents the dawn o a newera in rugged, wearable computing.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE:COMMERCIAL AND MILITARY RADIOGD300 RIKs are capable o inter acingwith Land Mobile Radios (LMRs) usedby rst responders, public works and

public sa ety crews, and military andeld personnel. LMR P25 radiossupport a variety o open inter acestandards and can be deployed in awide range o civilian and militaryapplications. Forestry and nationalparks services, police and re depart-ments, utility and transportation

customers all bene t rom LMR P25interoperability, legacy support andfexibility.

JTRS HMS Rifeman Radio (AN/PRC-154)is an example o a JTRS (Joint Tacti-cal Radio System) networking device

that uses the Soldier Radio Wave orm(SRW). Rifeman Radio is a secure,body-worn radio that uses JTRS mesh

networks to provide connectivity inhard to reach locations at theextreme edge o the battle eld. Inaddition to voice communication, the AN/PRC-154 can support datatransmission and connect to theGD300 via the RIK.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE:GROUNDTRUTHTM HANDHELDGroundTruth TM is a web-based mul-

timedia reporting system that allowsusers to collect and share in ormationto improve situational awareness andto acilitate collaboration and in or-mation analysis. GroundTruth is basedupon the DARPA-sponsored TacticalGround Reporting (TIGR) capabil-ity used throughout the U.S. Armytoday. The fexible GD300 operatingsystem allows or operation o both

the GroundTruth and TIGR handheldapplications.

GroundTruth has an intuitive graphi-cal and map-re erenced user inter aceand combines GPS tracks and digitalimages to enhance local knowledge onterrain, landmarks, key in rastructureand other relevant data; track dynamicdata (such as be ore/ a ter imaging, new obstacles, etc.); and assist the unitrotation process by allowing quickreview o past and ongoing activities inan area o responsibility. With simplic-ity reminiscent o GoogleMaps TM andFacebook ®, GroundTruth Handheld isper ectly suited or the GD300 with itshigh-resolution touch screen.
