GDAŃSK - COSMOPOLITICAL CITY
ETHNICAL ANALYSIS OF SOCIETY BEFORE II WORLD WAR
Gdańsk (997-1308)
In Gdańsk, which was ruled by the dynasty of Pomeranian princes, native Slovian society was coexisting with increasing number of
merchants and craftsmen arriving from West.
Gdańsk (1308 - 1454)Gdańsk, during crusaders era was a bravely developing community center. This fact had a bad influence on Polish inhabitants, who were
living under a continuous pressure.During these times, the Gdańsk’ city complex
was monocultural in terms of ethnicity, although masses of Germans flooded there.
Gdańsk (1454 – 1793)
As for Gdańsk, as for the whole Polish society, these times of blooming of the country were
called The Golden Century. During these times Gdańsk became a
metropolis for many cultures. Masses of Jews, Hugenots, Scots, Scandinavians, Germans and Dutchmen arrived to the town because of the
Reformation.
Gdańsk (1793 – 1919)
Years of partitions destroyed Gdańsk. Prussian leadership established the soldier enforcement in
the town, which made the wisest and the greatest Gdańsk inhabitants emigrate.
In 1807, the city was conquered by Napoleon, but only for 7 years – army of Tzhar conquered
Gdańsk in 1814. Prussian army recovered the city, which became
degraded – Gdańsk had a lack of its nativity.
Gdańsk (1919 – 1939)
These times were very hard for Gdańsk, because the town was germanised – Polish society didn’t
count even 10% of inhabitants.Hitler’ party became leaders in 1933, which was
connected with penalties for Polish people. Gdańsk was managed by 3rd Mass dignitaries.
After the burst of the War, Polishmen were carried out from Gdańsk to General Gubernatory or to
Stutthoff concentration camp.
Gdańsk later
After the war, Gdańsk, as the whole „Recovered Grounds” have become a place of moves of the Kresy inhabitants; from this time Gdańsk
will be diametrically different…
