2 Introduction

2.1 Definition The global switchgear market is categorized and segmented by the main product groups, as defined by the industry. The switchgear market is generally segmented based on low, medium and high voltages. Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is a kind of switchgear which uses SF6 as the insulating medium. 2.1.2 Medium Voltage Switchgear Globally, voltage ranging from 3.6kV to 40.5kV is labeled as medium voltage switchgear. The various system voltages used in the medium voltage switchgear categories are 3.6kV/7.2kV/12kV/24kV/40.5kV.

2.1.3 Low Voltage Switchgear Switchgear with a voltage rating of below 3.6kV can be considered low voltage switchgear. GIS is not used in low voltage applications and is only available in the medium voltage and high voltage categories.

2.1.4 Gas Insulated Switchgear When the current flowing through electricity wires is suddenly broken, there is a tendency for the current to continue to flow. This can lead to arcs and sparks. In order to prevent this, switchgear is used in the electricity cables. Switchgear can be of different types and is insulated by different mediums, such as air, oil, vacuum and gas. GIS is effective but costly switchgear, where the contacts and conductors are insulated with sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas. All the parts of the switchgear are covered with a metal enclosure to give protection and reduce the size of the equipment. Inside the metal enclosure, the assembly of the gas insulated switchgear contains sections which are completely separated and pressurized by SF6. Gas insulated switchgear can be single phase or three phase. Generally, up to XXkV, the three phases of the gas insulated switchgear have a common enclosure, while for higher voltages the phases are separated.
