Dear Friends and Families,

This is an unprecedented time in our lives. We are blessed at Lourdes Senior Community to have a team of employees who are committed to caring about and providing quality care for our residents, your loved ones.

The staff is working hard to minimize the impact of this lockdown on residents’ daily lives. Our activity staff are focusing on all individual activities, having stopped all large group activities. The use of technology has become

more important. Families have opportunities to Skype and Facetime with residents. At Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center the residents are playing bingo and hosting music programs through the television sets using the in-house channel. At Mendelson Assisted Living residents are playing bingo from their doorways. Clausen Manor staff is conducting activities in small groups. Meals are served the same way. Fox Manor is conducting small group activities, serving meals in their apartments and visiting the residents in their apartments.

We have provided our staff with timely information so they can protect themselves, their residents and their families. We take temperatures of our staff as they come to work and screen for their risk of exposure outside of work. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available for staff and all are encouraged to wash hands repeatedly throughout their day.

Working with the guidelines established by appropriate agencies and health departments we continue to live out our mission that calls us to honor each person with compassion, love, respect, and dignity. Again, we are blessed with wonderful staff and we shall continue to care for and provide the care deserving of each resident until life returns to “normal”.

For all of us I offer the prayer of Pope Francis in his recent Urbi and Orbi address “...may God’s blessing come down upon you as a consoling embrace. Lord, may you bless the world, give health to our bodies and comfort our hearts.”

Blessings on you and your loved ones.

PRAYER FOR THE SUMMER

Lord,

If only I’d trust your promises, with the hope I have that spring will come...

If only I’d serve my neighbors’ needs, as well as I generously tend to my own...

If only I’d think as kindly of all as I do of my best, my closest friends...

If only I’d do what you ask of me as surely as I follow my own desires...

If only I’d be as fair and as justas I want others to be with me...

If only I’d hold the weak as your arms hold me with gentle strength...

If only my words and deeds were as pure as the love you speak and offer to me...

If only I’d pardon my neighbor’s faults with the mercy you show me...

If only I’d make the time for prayer that you make for me when I come to you...

If only I’d put all my trust in you, Lord: not in my worries, my doubts and my fears...

If only I’d love you, my Lord, my God, as simply, as dearly, as you love me...

Amen.

Admirations For Lourdes“My mother was able to enjoy many years at Mendelson Home and Clausen Manor. Her life was enriched and extended because of the loving care she received and the activities provided. I will always be grateful for the kindness shown to her and our family. Many blessings.”

- Lourdes Family Member

“I look forward to receiving the Continuums. They are filled with the latest Lourdes information, and include beautiful stories and pictures about many of the residents. I daily thank the Lord for my home here at Fox Manor; it’s a special family-friendly community.

During the day we are always welcomed and greeted with one of our helpful administrative assistants. Our staff provides us with so many “fun” parties. My favorites are Christmas and the summer picnics.

We are served a delicious meal daily by our youth. My favorites are turkey and rib dinners. Each day is filled with some sort of worship, fitness exercise, entertainment or outing.

A BIG thanks to all who work at Fox Manor for making life here so special!”

- Jo Heitmeyer, Fox Manor Resident

A warm thanks to all of you at Mendelson Home who provide for our parents with comfort, medical care, guidance and fun filled activities. Knowing they are in good hands is a blessing to our family.

WHAT’S NEW...

3

It has been an interesting couple of months to say the least. As COVID-19 swept the nation, we all faced monumental changes to our jobs, social interactions and way of life. On March 13, 2020, to safeguard our residents and staff, Lourdes Senior Community asked family and friends to abstain from visiting resident facilities. It was a tough decision. According to the University of California, San Francisco, more than 40% of older adults struggle with feelings of loneliness. Resident activities and programs like massage therapy are instrumental to the mental and emotional health of seniors. “By following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), we knew what measures needed to be put in place: tracking symptoms, sanitizing our facilities, restricting visitors, providing education regarding hand-washing and cough etiquette,” said Robin McClintock, Director of Mendelson Home, Fox and Clausen Manor.

while maintaining social distance mandates. Resident favorites such as bingo, exercise and music therapy could no longer be held in large groups. One solution? Video streaming. Music instructor, Laurie, was broadcast across individual televisions or devices. Bingo numbers were also called this way. “I actually have used the front door cameras for exercise classes,” said Tammy Keeley, Activity Director at Fox Manor. The residents at Fox Manor Independent Living all have a channel that allows them to see guests arriving at the front door. “We let them know what time I will be there. I do the exercise routine in the entrance way and they follow along from their rooms.” Staff also passed out more solitary activities for residents, such as puzzle books, coloring pages, novels, magazines and movies. Birthday celebrations are celebrated with icecream served at honoree rooms. At Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, they even brought Easter eggs to each resident to color!

“We had to get a little more creative when it came to keeping our residents physically, emotionally and spiritually fulfilled.” Fortunately, Lourdes has a staff of excellent activity directors! “The first thing we did was ensure that our residents could still have face-to-face interactions with their loved ones,” said Jacqui Baker, Activity Director at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Clausen Manor, Mendelson Home and Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center all ordered additional tablets to offset the need of family visitation. They set designated call times for families to see each other and chat. “I think FaceTime has been well received by everyone,” said Meghan Singleton, Activity Director at Clausen Manor and Mendelson Home. “The residents are comforted by being able to see their families and check in on their loved ones. It helps assure them that all is well.” In addition to creating a new normal for family visitation, staff had to find a new way to conduct activities

However, while helping residents stay entertained, video streaming and solo activities didn’t erase feelings of isolation and loneliness. “We had to find ways for our residents to feel connected,” said Meghan Singleton. They decided to give hallway activities a try. “We have residents come to their doorways. Then we lead exercise.” At Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center they’ve played doorway bingo, and at Fox Manor employees have held concerts, singing from one end of the hall while residents listen and applaud from their apartment thresholds. Tammy Keeley also started a pen pal program where residents can write to their friends in the facility that they haven’t visited in a while. “We write every Monday,” said Tammy Keeley. “Of course they can call each other too, but letter writing is a fun way to keep in touch and be a little creative at the same time.” While these changes haven’t been easy, the challenges have taught us to be creative, kind and patient. We have discovered new interest and hobbies. We have learned to overcome and that their are many ways to connect, communicate and spread hope to each other.

“And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and

good works.” -Hebrews

LIFE ADVICE FROM OUR RESIDENTS

We asked our residents what advice they would give to younger generations or even to a younger version of themselves. We hope you enjoy their answers!

“Never turn your back on your family. Later in life they become so much more important. I rely so much on my family; now more than ever. You never know what could happen and when you need their help.”

- Carole Stiefvater, Mendelson Home Resident

“Decision, decisions, decisions. We were married with two kids while Ray was in the Navy. At one point, we had the dilemma of choosing where to live. California or Michigan? It’s helpful during tough decisions to create a pro and con list to help make the best choice. Michigan had better job opportunities at the time. We both came from large families and thought it would be good to be near family to raise ours. We missed our family and knew there would be challenges in any decision we made but also knew we needed to do what was best overall. So we chose to move back to Michigan after Ray got out of the Navy.

- Ray and Patti Bean

“As you know, life is a journey. When I was a senior in high school and would be taking a journey/trip, I would have made sure to pack my favorite clothes, hair curlers, barrettes and ribbons for hair and of course a little makeup. After all, a girl always had to look her best!

Now as another type of “senior”, I’d pack for my journey a little differently having experienced many things in life, some good, some not so good. One item to pack for sure would be my cell phone. We couldn’t have even imagined such a thing back in the 60’s! I’ve learned it’s not things that are important but people...family, friends. With my cell phone I can reach them easily. Over the years my best friend has always been with me...even before cell phones. He’s always near, 24-7. Many times on my journey when I was too tired, He carried me. So my Life Advice is to keep a good relationship with my best friend, God. He’s always there for you. No matter what.”

EXERCISE YOUR MIND

NUTRITION FOR SENIORS

The brain generally isn’t the first organ we think of when considering exercise, but a healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body. Perhaps even more important as the brain is responsible for maintaining the function of every other organ.

Having a healthy mind also effects our ability to make sense of the world and navigate through life. Memory, sense, learning, judgement and concentration all depend on the brain. At Lourdes Senior Community we know it’s important to keep our minds as active as our bodies. As such, our activities staff take these daily steps to help maintain a healthy mind: 1. Physical Activity: believe it or not, physical activity isn’t just good for your body. Aerobic exercise increases capacity for memory, improves overall brain function and repairs damaged brain cells.

2. Diet: what you eat directly effects the health of your organs. That includes the brain. Consuming a diet rich in vitamins and minerals sharpens brain performance and helps maintain proper functioning. Try and stay away from high saturated fats and processed foods. 3. Learn Something New: the more you learn, the healthier your mind will be. Learning a new skill keeps your mind active and improves memory. So find a new hobby and challenge yourself. 4. Social Connections: social stimulation creates brain cell growth, improves cognitive skills and decreases the risk of dementia. Meaningful social activity may also lower stress. So get out there. Join a club or take a class. Find a new friend to help keep your mind sharp.

Nutrition and healthy living should be a constant goal in all our lives. For older adults, maintaining a healthy diet is even more important. As we age, our bodies change, and so does the amount of nutrients we need on a daily basis. After age 50, our body’s calorie requirements begin to decline, and so does our capacity to absorb vitamins and minerals. The challenge, while eating less overall, is to eat more nutrient-rich foods. These three core vitamins and minerals should be prominent in every meal:

1. Calcium and Vitamin D: you need both vitamin D and calcium to prevent bone loss. Three servings of low fat milk or yogurt per day is the best way for your body to absorb what it needs. However fortified cereals, fortified juices and leafy greens are also great sources of calcium.

2. Fiber: eating more fiber based foods help to regulate your digestive system, as well as reduce your risk of heart disease. Whole grain cereals, whole grain bread and fresh fruit and vegetables are a great source of fiber.

3. B-12: vitamin B is an essential water-soluble vitamin that helps ensure healthy nerves and red blood cells. Milk and other dairy foods, meat, fish (especially salmon), poultry and eggs, all provide your body with the B-12 you need to stay healthy.

In recent months, Lourdes Senior Community has discussed the benefit of installing encoder/modulators as part of the Direct TV system. With some engineering, these encoders allow for distribution through a selected tv channel. Activities and programs such as bingo, music therapy and religious services are able to be watched by residents in their rooms, as well as played in the lobby or other common areas across Lourdes Senior Community. The current pandemic has strengthend the need for such streaming devices. While we hope to return to normal life as soon as possible, installing the encoder/modulators will allow us to offer even more entertainment and services to our residents while maintaining social distancing mandates. The estimate for this installment is around $4000.00

Other Requests:

Bingo Prizes are one of the weekly activities our residents look forward to. While we continue to social distance, we can not accept our normal donations of puzzles, stuffed animals, candies, ect... Instead we are asking for monetary donations so that staff may order prizes and products which upon entering the building can be more throughly sanitized. Thank you for your generosity and understanding.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PAM GOOD she has served residents with care, compassion and dignity. She inspires her staff with her initiative and leadership, providing for residents with a gentle spirit. “I enjoy making a difference in the lives of our residents,” said Good. “I get to use my skills to make their stay with us a positive one.” LeadingAge Michigan plans to recognize award recipients at their Member Awards Gala during their Annual Conference & Solutions Expo on Tuesday, May 19, 2020. Congratulations, Pam! We’re so very grateful for you!

Pamela Good, who has worked as a registered nurse for more than thirty years, recently won the LeadingAge of Michigan Caring Spirit Award. The Caring Spirit Award is presented to individuals who have made an immeasurable impact on the lives of older adults. “Pam was nominated because of her passion for taking care of older adults,” said Maureen McGee, Administrator at Lourdes. “She respects each resident as an individual and has built strong bonds with both the residents and their families.” Pamela has worked as an RN at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for ten years, during which time

We were blessed with two gifts from The Catholic Foundation of Michigan in the past few months; one for OMA and recently for the COVID-19 pandemic. Gifts received by the Foundation can be designated for Lourdes Senior Community which will be forwarded to us. SERVING GOD, FAITH AND EASTER AMONG COVID When we think of Holy Week, we visualize religious services and time with family and friends. Most of us attend Mass or church services. We gather for Easter egg hunts and partake in a savory Sunday dinner. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, normal observances of the holiday and family traditions weren’t possible. However, thanks to efforts made by residents and staff, Lourdes still found a way to make Holy Week special. “We’ve worked hard to provide for the spiritual needs of our residents, while still observing social distancing mandates,” said Sister Teresita Lipar, OP, Pastoral Director at Lourdes Senior Community. A member of the Pastoral team has been assigned to each of Lourdes four residences. Sister Teresita oversees Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, while Deacon Paul visits and serves the residents at Fox Manor. Chaplain Mary is assigned to Clausen Manor and Mendelson Home. Throughout each day, Lourdes spiritual advisors spend one-on-one time with residents, serving communion, praying, and counseling them through worries and challenges. Once a week, a priest also visits Lourdes’ community to televise Mass. “We use a close circuit internalized broadcasting system,” said Sister Teresita. Rosary and Stations of the Cross are also televised at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. At Fox Manor Independent Living and Mendelson Assisted Living, residents are able to sign up for private visits to the chapel to pray or partake in counseling sessions. While technological advances have helped maintain a daily practice of faith, staff and residents still had to look for ways to make the Easter Holiday special.

“We celebrated the Holy Eucharist with a procession where we blessed residents at each doorway,” said Sister Teresita. They also made sure to hand out blessed palms Easter Sunday. At Fox Manor, residents had started a Lenten book study. They made sure to continue their book discussion with Deacon Paul making personal visits to any resident who wished to participate. Likewise, the activities staff made sure residents still got to take part in a few favorite holiday past times. “We took eggs to each of the resident rooms for them to color,” said Jacqui Baker, Activity Director at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. To manage this, staff placed dye in sandwich baggies. Residents would select a color and place their egg in the bag, resulting in fun patterns and designs. Residents also received holiday coloring sheets and had a few special treats, including a ham dinner served individually. At Fox Manor, residents took on a unique approach to their holiday traditions, choosing to make a holiday Easter tree. The residents decorated the tree with eggs and crosses each containing a special message. “They wanted to thank the staff,” said Tammy Keeley, Fox Manor Activity Director. Each decoration is a message of thanks to the staff who continued to show up to work and make each day special. While this year saw different ways of celebrating, we continued to remember the true meaning of Easter. We have peace, hope, forgiveness and a future in our God!
