Improved protein detection Vivascience AG of Hanover, Germany, has introduced a new Vivapure Anti-HSA Kit for removing albumin from human serum. It is based on unique Anti-HSA antibody fragments coupled to cross-linked agarose for achieving high albumin binding capacities. The company claims that in con- trast to traditional dye-based lig- ands, specific removal of over 95% human albumin from a human sample is achieved without includ- ing significant amounts of other serum or plasma proteins. According to Vivascience, this procedure improves the resolution and detection of lower abundance sample proteins by electrophore- sis, chromatography and mass spectrometry. The Vivapure Anti-HSA Kit for human albumin depletion contains Anti-HSA affinity-resin, centrifugal columns (which can be filled indi- vidually with the required amount of Anti-HSA resin), micro-cen- trifuge tubes and binding buffer for preparing 12 serum samples. The spin column format allows a single sample to be processed in 20 min- utes, says the company. Vivascience AG is a subsidiary of Sartorius AG, which is based in Goettingen, Germany. Originally founded as Vivascience Ltd in Stonehouse, UK, the biotechnology company employs 80 people at four subsidiaries in Germany, USA, UK, and France. Polypore International seeks IPO Polypore International Inc of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, is planning to raise up to US$345 million through an initial public offering (IPO) of common stock. The company has filed for an IPO with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, and says that net proceeds will be used to reduce debt, including part of the senior subordinated notes issued by subsidiary Polypore Inc. The com- pany intends to list its stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ‘PLY’. Polypore makes polymer-based membranes used in separation and filtration processes. The company, which employs 2000 worldwide, markets its products to the power storage, health-care, electronics and speciality technology industries. In fiscal 2003, Polypore generat- ed revenue totalling US$441.1 mil- lion and net income of US$45.3 million. During December 1999, the company acquired the Celgard lithium battery separator and sepa- ration membrane business of Celanese AG. To expand its pres- ence in the health-care and speciali- ty filtration markets, it acquired German corporation Membrana GmbH in February 2002. GE distributes Proton Energy Systems' products Proton Energy Systems Inc, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp, and a manufactur- er of the membrane-based Hogen on-site hydrogen generator, has signed a distribution agreement with GE Supply, a business unit of General Electric Co. The 36-month agreement appoints GE as a non-exclusive dis- tributor of Proton's products for the electric power-generating industry throughout the world, excluding certain European countries. Proton Energy Systems Inc designs, develops and manufac- tures proton exchange membrane (PEM), electrochemical products which it employs in hydrogen- generating devices and in regener- ative fuel cell systems that func- tion as power-generating and energy storage devices. The Hogen hydrogen generators produce hydrogen from electricity and water in a clean and efficient process using its proprietary PEM technology.
