AC or DC – The decision isyoursGE has an offering whether you need an AC or DC solution. Oursystems approach emphasizes a solution optimized to yourapplication, with high productivity, high availability and drop-inmechanical compatibility with AISE MD motor standards forboth AC and DC applications.

AC solutions offer state-of-the-art IGBT variable frequencydrives, while our DC solutions offer high performance using MGset-based systems, including DC drives, with a decades-longtrack record of performance.

Both AC and DC solutions offer the benefits of air-cooledoperation with power factor control and regeneration ofenergy back to the line for high energy efficiency.

GE has the ability to support all the machine-level controlfunctions with control systems developed through hundreds ofinstallations in excavator systems. The control philosophy in allour excavator systems is to maintain machine-level controland parameters at the PLC/HMI level and place drive-specificfunctions and parameters in controllers that are integratedwith the drive units.

Fault logging, remote diagnostics, data trending, XY plots andtroubleshooting functions are available as a SCADA option.

The AC system is a complete motion solutioncomprised of an integrated family of powerdelivery elements, Variable Frequency Drives(VFD), AC motors and controls. Each system isdesigned for the specific application using motorsof various frame sizes and mounting orientations(horizontal and vertical) and drives tailored to theplatform.

The AC system is designed to use a master PLC tocontrol system functions, maintainingcommonality of equipment and controlalgorithms with existing DC excavator systems.

Our newly designed air-cooled AC KD800 seriesmotors are mechanically interchangeable withour existing DC MD800 series Mill Duty motors,down to the mounting configurations and shaftheights. This gives you the flexibility to selecteither AC or DC with full confidence, whetherretrofitting existing excavators or engineering anall new design.

• Active Front Ends capable of regenerative operation form the interface to the utility

• Our insulation system is designed for 20 year winding life under normal excavator operation

The new family of AC Variable Frequency Drives(VFD) have been developed using a modularapproach. GE’s system is designed to yourspecifications using a common set of modulesand passive components, improving availabilityand reliability.

The system delivers:

• Four-quadrant control of all motor functions with active power factor correction

• An air-cooled drive system designed for minimal maintenance with extended filter change intervals

• AFEs and Inverters configured as Master/Slave with an automatic fail-over feature, which allows for reduced-capability operation until maintenance can be scheduled

• System communication networks use standard bus protocols

The Active Front End in our Variable FrequencyDrives provides high energy efficiency with PowerFactor management to minimize line transientsand disruptions at the Point of CommonConnection (PCC) to the utility. The Inverters aredesigned and rated to support the severe duty ofexcavator motor applications.

GE DC Excavator SolutionsThe DC system uses Ward Leonard controls withsynchronous machines driving MG sets, allcontrolled by field exciters. The field exciters areIGBT chopper technology-based and deliver ahigh performance, modular control system tailor-made for excavator use.

The field exciters use digital regulators thatprovide generator and motor control functions bycontrolling armature volts and amps to levels thatmaximize productivity and minimize equipmentstress. The field exciters control the synchronousmotor excitation to provide system reactivepower support during motoring and regenerationas well as line voltage transients.

The exciters share DC power from a common bus,thereby conserving energy, minimizing onboardharmonics and minimizing impact of exciters onsystem power factor.

• Fast dynamic response and smooth speed control due to optimal system inertia

• Specifically designed to accelerate, decelerate or reverse under conditions of severe duty-cycle operation
