Year after year, the demand for energy grows and the mix of available resources to meet that demand changes.

around the world, the balance between oil, coal, nuclear, renewables, and natural gas has shifted significantly as global energy demand continues to rise.

In the United States, utilities are adding wind and

retiring coal plants and need more flexible options.

In Saudi Arabia where natural gas is being used to

conserve valuable crude oil for export, there is a need

for a highly efficient solution that can operate in such

an extreme climate. Brazil generates 80% of its power

from hydroelectric sources, and an increasing number of

wind projects are being planned throughout the country

requiring flexible and efficient power. Japan, having

endured devastating natural disasters, has shifted away

from nuclear power and is looking for a highly efficient

baseload power source that is cleaner than coal and can

continue to meet stringent emissions standards.

Needs and priorities may differ, but each

country is working toward similar outcomes.

All will need an energy technology collaborator

who can utilize the resources and multiple

fuel sources in their region to deliver reliable,

responsive power to their country’s energy grid.

Maintaining a mix of fuel sources is as essential

as having a diverse power portfolio to aid

each country’s efforts toward energy security

and emissions reduction. Even as natural gas

becomes a baseload fuel of choice and the

opportunities to harness renewable energy

grow, having means to balance the energy grid

is important.

With the world’s largest installed fleet of both land-based and jet engine gas turbines, GE is uniquely positioned to deploy and maintain efficient and flexible technology to create a comprehensive advanced power generation solution — GE’s new FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio.

the greater than 61% baseload efficiency and unmatched flexibility of the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio will help meet customers’ needs and support plant operation strategies now and well into the future.

FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio

As plants shift to more cyclic operation, owners and operators have

the opportunity to generate electricity more cost effectively when their

plants are both flexible and efficient. GE developed the “FlexEfficiency”

concept to represent the value of profitable energy production divided by

annual fuel consumption.

By evaluating the total annual fuel consumption across a highly variable

operating profile, customers can capture fuel costs according to the way

their plant will actually run.

Ultimately, it comes down to increasing available energy and generating the highest possible level of revenue by reducing fuel burn and associated costs.

the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio brings an unprecedented level of flexibility and efficiency to 60 hertz countries with a suite of products created to work together for improved performance. Modular, flexible and customizable, the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio enables plants to be configured as needed for specific applications, situations, and priorities.

Delivering greater than 61% baseload efficiency and unprecedented operating flexibility, the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio is an excellent solution to address the complex needs of energy grids today and in the future.

FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio

Each of the components in the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio—from the gas and steam turbines to the generator and control system—contain the same strands of “FlexEfficiency Dna.”

By sharing core components among technologies, GE is able to increase

the speed with which it brings products to customers. For plant owners,

that means quicker access to tested and validated technologies. For

example, the compressor, combustor, and hot gas path on the 7F 7-series

gas turbine have gone through multiple generations of implementation.

By building on the previous generations’ strengths and innovations, GE

is able to consistently deliver excellent reliability, improved quality, and

reduced overall lifecycle costs.

GE’s FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio also facilitates the addition of renewable energy to the grid by allowing combined cycle plants to turndown as low as 14% of baseload.1

Running gas turbines at very low loads rather than shutting them down

limits emissions when they start back up. However, when there is a start-up,

FlexEfficiency technology allows the plant to start and load very quickly. This

reduces fuel burn and emissions during start-up, while also improving efficiency.

Never before have power plant owners had more opportunities to employ

valuable natural gas resources with such a high level of efficiency. Whether

customers need highly efficient baseload power or more flexible cyclic power

generation, the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio delivers both.

FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio

at the core of the FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio is GE’s most advanced and thoroughly tested turbine technology to date. GE created F-class technology and was the first to achieve a number of industry milestones:

Having completed full-speed, full-load testing at GE’s world class validation facility, the 7F 5-series gas turbine is slated for deployment in exceptionally demanding applications to provide reliable power output while delivering fuel savings and reduced emissions.

The 7F 5-series gas turbine will play an important role in facilitating the

introduction of renewable technologies by serving as a reliable energy

resource to prevent grid disruption.

Capable of over 59% combined cycle efficiency, the 7F 5-series gas turbine

incorporates advanced combustion technology that will deliver more

operating flexibility, including better turndown capability while sustaining

higher levels of efficiency. The 14-stage compressor delivers higher

efficiency and its durable architecture has greater tolerance to off-nominal

operation. With the ability to ramp up or reduce power output quickly, there

exists an unprecedented level of operational flexibility and efficiency built

for modern energy demands.

Extending GE’s F-class technology and FlexEfficiency 60 Portfolio, the 7F 7-series gas

turbine provides more power to meet a wide application range while closely matching

specific output and efficiency requirements. The 7F 7-series gas turbine delivers

exceptional value, continuing GE’s commitment to lower plant operating costs while

reducing emissions.

The 7F 7-series gas turbine features a 4-stage hot gas path that breaks new ground

with greater than 61% efficiency in combined cycle. The 7F 7-series gas turbine also

incorporates an advanced DLN 2.6+AFS (Axial Fuel Staged) combustor into what is

already the most experienced combustion technology. The DLN 2.6+AFS is equipped

with an additional circuit that introduces added fuel into the combustion stage to

further improve turndown capability. Plant operators can also take advantage of a

larger operating range and move quicker within that range with a much faster ramp

rate and lower turndown, while maintaining emissions guarantees.

uses once-through hydrogen ventilation cooling to deliver 98.9% efficiency.

The H26 generator comes with built-in features to reduce costs and deliver

the high level of quality required in today’s energy industry.

Easier to install and maintain

The H26 generator’s one-piece frame construction offers simplified

installation, including reduced site assembly and ease of alignment on

the foundation. The arrangement allows for all aspects of the gas system

to be housed in one self-contained cabinet to increase available space.

Advanced monitoring, enabled via the Mark VIe ICS and automated

accessory controls, reduces manual activity for efficient operation.

lower operating costs and capital expenses

The H26 generator includes a modular gas system to provide

monitoring while simultaneously enhancing efficiency. Incorporating

a standard generator configuration in a multi-shaft FlexEfficiency

the need to hold inventory for lower operating costs and easier

maintenance. The expense of installation and commissioning can

be further cut by deploying FOUNDATION ™ Fieldbus, which requires

up to 50% less wiring while providing “smart” sensors for enhanced

diagnostics and predictive monitoring.

Integrated control for highly efficient operation

GE’s “one-system” control philosophy extends to the generator exciter

and static start Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) system, which utilize

the same controller and configuration tools as the turbine and plant

controls. The seamless integration of the exciter and LCI into the overall

control and protection system facilitates enhanced operation, data
