Aim of this Course

• develop your understanding of the basic concepts and techniques of statistics

• comprehend and critically evaluate publications with research results

• use statistics properly: • (1) choose suitable statistical techniques, • (2) be able to interpret and present the results

Example

RQ: Is there a relation between the MC exam results and the assignments?

H1: There is a positive relation between the MC results and the assignment results

RQ: Is there a relation between the MC exam results and the assignments?

H1: There is a positive relation between the MC results and the assignment results

We found a significant Pearson R (0,352). This means there is a postive relation between assignments and MC exam for that reason we accept the hypothesis.

Prerequisites statistics and SPSS

• some insight in the scientific process (GE4)

• basic mathematical competence: what's asquare root etc. (secondary school)

• not afraid of statistical programs: Excel will do in many cases, SPSS is easy to use if you've passed the first hurdle

Page 24: GE5 Conducting Research. Introduction to course GE5 Conducting Research

Basic mathematical skills

• basic mathematical symbols and notations (like parenthesis in mathematical expressions)

• proportions, expressed as a fraction (¼), a decimal value (0.25) or a percentage (25%)

• handling of negative numbers• solving equations (finding the value of X in an

equation, like 2X + 3 = 17 )• exponents (3² = 9) and square roots

(√9 = 9½ = 3)
