Gear for PaddlersTM

Here at Palm we are as excited today about innovation and development of new products as we were over 30 years ago. We’ve celebrated our third decade in business with our busiest year yet, and in between everything else we’ve taken time to look back at the past and see how far we’ve come. Back in 1994 we developed the first Extrem PFD for an expedition to Papua New Guinea. It was a breakthrough in comfort and safety, and became an instant classic. Now, sixteen years and six generations on we’ve released the new Extrem Vest, the result of everything we’ve learned since, and a little extra too. The result of two years of team testing; the final product is filled with features, yet elegant and clutter free. It is functional above all else, yet at the same time looks fantastic. We designed it to be the safest rescue PFD on the market, and have also made it the most comfortable.

Industry leading products of this kind are the result of a long process of innovation, development, testing and refinement, a process which goes into everything that we make. Every detail of every garment is considered with the end purpose in mind, and comes with our high quality finish and attention to detail as standard. Here at Palm we support a diverse range of paddlers, and paddling projects, as can be seen from the images on the following pages. The challenges undertaken vary enormously, but what the participants share is a passion for the simple joy of putting their paddle in the water, and seeing where it can take them. Whether your equipment needs to get you through the toughest expedition, or simply to offer confidence and comfort on the water, our equipment is specifically designed for your needs. No more excuses then, it’s time to find out where your paddle will take you.

at Palm we design our immersion suits specifically for the needs of paddlers. That’s why they’re the most comfortable, functional, and durable paddling suits on the market. From our industry leading Stikine and aleutian to the versatile and affordable Silver, all Palm immersion suits feature a relief zip and waterproof, breathable socks as standard. every suit is also inspected and tested for watertightness before leaving the factory. Palm’s premium suits are constructed in our bespoke 4-layer XP250™ fabric, tested by our team for over 200 days before giving their ap-proval. Through the use of an innovative new cut we’ve reduced the number of seams whilst improving articulation, resulting in a less restrictive, yet drier and more durable garment. our socks are also now constructed with welded, double taped seams and Cordura® soles to make them both more comfortable and longer lasting.

A spraydeck that fits well should be easy enough to put on by yourself, and stay on the cockpit as long as you need it to. Everybody will have slightly different needs and priorities.

For 2010 we’ve produced a handy web app to help you find the right spraydeck. Search for your kayak from hundreds of the most popular models and find the best fit for you.

Palm use only the best waterproof zips in our drysuits. however, all zips must be cared for to ensure correct operation:

always keep the zipper flat when folding or stor-ing the garment. Folding the garment across the zipper can destroy the seal. always rinse zips after use, especially after use in saltwater.

Keep zips regularly lubricated. Lubricant comes included with Surface immersion Suits or can be purchased separately.

if the zip jams, try to release it by thoroughly washing in fresh water and applying lubricant. after releasing the zip, gently run the slider back and forth to spread the lubricant along the length of the zip and protect it from future jams.

Specific Lubrication and Storage instructions:

Tizip Waterproof Zippers Storage Store the garment rolled up with the zip closed and on the outside.

Lubrication regular lubrication with an acid free, grease or oil based lubricant is essential to ensure full strength of the seal. We recommend re-lubricating approximately every 10 uses. Check for sand or dirt before every use.Palm recommends Tizip Lubricant

BDM Brass Coil Zipper Storagerolled up with the zipper open and on the outside. Lubrication Lubricate the slider occasionally with parafin, beeswax or a zipper lubricant such as BDM Zip Wax. a small amount of Vaseline on the closing end improves sealing but be careful to avoid contact with latex seals.Palm recommends BDM Zip Wax

CARE AND WARRANTY

Palm uses performance fabrics that are highly waterproof and breathable. To protect the fabric and keep it in full working order, ensure that you carry out these basic care procedures when packing away wet gear:

Loosely fold up your gear and prevent latex gaskets coming into contact with abrasive dirt, sand or oil-based substances (including sunscreen and insect repellent).

Try not to leave your gear in a damp condition for long periods of time. Wash and dry within 24 hours.

hand wash in fresh water only to a maximum temperature of 30ºC. To remove dirt or grease use a non-detergent soap (e.g. nikwax Techwash) and rinse well.

Do not tumble-dry your paddle gear. allow garments to dry naturally and away from direct sunlight.

once dry, check to see if any running repairs are necessary. if damage has occurred either through wear and tear or careless use, Palm offers an excellent repair service.

Correct storage of your Palm paddle gear will noticeably increase its life. Store in a cool place away from direct sunlight and try to avoid leaving equipment in your vehicle during warm weather.

avoid compressing your gear.

To get the most from garments with latex gaskets it is important that you adopt the correct procedure each time you use your paddle top:

natural latex gaskets are very sensitive to sunlight and also vulnerable to damage from oil based products (sunscreen and insect repel-lent).

remove all watches, rings and jewellery. Gently place your hand and wrist inside the seal and with your other hand ease each seal on one at a time.

use both hands for the neck seal, gently stretching the aperture to allow the seal to pass over your head.

Finally, remove any excess air from the paddle top by venting the neck with two fingers.

When removing your paddle top, it is essential that this is done with great care by reversing the dressing procedure.

The size of the latex gaskets on all paddle tops are governed by the size of the garment. however, should a seal feel excessively tight it is possible to achieve a custom fit by careful trimming with sharp scis-sors - neck seals have concentric rings specifically for this purpose. Trimming should always be undertaken with extreme caution. ideally, the garment should be worn outdoors in cold weather to assess the size required.

Palm recommends the frequent use of a silicone-based protect-ant (e.g. Mcnett Sealsaver) to extend the life of latex gaskets. This should be applied after every two or three outings and as prescribed by the manufacturers instructions given on the bottle.

It should be borne in mind that paddle top latex gaskets are not 100% watertight. Movement will always create a minor amount of seepage, but this is usually very insignificant and should not adversely affect your comfort or enjoyment.

The above care instructions apply to the majority of Palm apparel. Always check individual garment care labels for precise instructions.
