Learn About the GEAR UP Program
GEAR UP provides a multitude of
services to students and their parents
designed to meet the objectives of the
University of Washington and national
GEAR UP program.
GEAR UP collaborates with administra-
tors, teachers and staff within the
Mount Vernon School district and the
surrounding community to provide
learning opportunities and experiences
for targeted high school students to
prepare them to enter and succeed in
post secondary education.

GEAR UP Grants
“Two Valleys One Vision”:
The first grant awarded in 2005 pro-
vides targeted academic support for
a cohort of students starting in middle
school and following them through
their graduation from Mount Vernon
High School in 2011.
“Sky’s the Limit”:
The second grant awarded in 2006 ,
now in its fourth year, provides tar-
geted academic support for a cohort
of students starting in middle school
through graduation. from Mount
Vernon High School in 2012.
Goals of the Grants:
Increase the academic per-
formance and preparation for
post-secondary education for
GEAR UP students.
Increase the rate of high
school graduation and participa-
tion in post secondary education.
Increase students’ and their
families’ knowledge of post-
secondary education options,
preparation and finances.
Services Provided
What is GEAR UP?
The GEAR UP project is part of a national
effort to help students from low income
families plan for and succeed in higher
education.
The Mount Vernon School District in Part-
nership with the University of Washington
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate programs)
Project was first awarded in September
2005.
The grants are federally funded in partner-
ship with the University of Washington.
