A publication for members of Advocate Condell Centre Club Gear Up for Your Child’s Fall Sports Season A re your kids ready for their fall sports season? Now is the time to begin preparing for fall athletics in order to decrease the risks of injury. Overuse and repetitive injuries represent about 50% of adolescent sports related issues. Many of these can be prevented with proper training and mechanics, conditioning programs, and delayed specialization. A pre-participation physical and a sports specific screening by a physical therapist could identify key risk factors for an athlete and preventative measures can be initiated. Evaluation of overall posture, muscular imbalances, gait mechanics, core stability, and functional strength can help identify areas of concern and thus recommendations can be made for correcting any deficits. While most athletic programs require clearance from a physician before playing sports, this assessment may not cover this specific content. Knowing key areas to focus on in the pre-season could help prevent in-season injuries. Pre-season conditioning should concentrate on neuromuscular control, balance and coordination, flexibility, strength, and endurance. Every athlete has different strengths and weaknesses; we will provide an individualized program for each person. Another potential risk for athletes is suffering a concussion- an injury that can manifest itself in varying signs and symptoms. Returning to activity too early after recovering from a concussion can be detrimental to the health of your athlete. ImPACT testing is a tool that can help health care providers monitor the recovery of neurocognitive processes after a concussion. The ImPACT test is a computerized concussion evaluation program and can be ONE piece of the concussion management process. Baseline testing will give clinicians data specific to your athlete. Then, if a concussion does occur during the season, the baseline report will serve as a comparison to a follow-up test. We want to ensure that your athlete is in the best possible condition to begin their sports season this year. Our physical therapists can provide sports specific screenings of your child to evaluate areas of risk or concern and give advice on what stretches and strengthening exercises to focus on to decrease the possibility of injury. We also offer baseline ImPACT testing for any athlete (12 and older), so in the event a concussion occurs, your healthcare provider will have healthy comparison data for your athlete. Gear Up for Your Child’s Fall Sports SeasonAre your kids ready for their fall sports season?

Another potential risk for athletes is suffering a concussion-an injury that can manifest itself in varying signs and symptoms. Then, if a

concussion does occur during the season, the baseline report will serve as a comparison to a follow-up test.

To set up an appointment for any of these services please contact Angela Ferguson at 847.990.5555.

Women’s Orthopedic Health Through the DecadesDr. Kerri Kulovitz, Orthopedic Surgeon, Advocate Condell Medical Center

Although we may try to live an active lifestyle, women tend to be more susceptible to certain musculoskeletal injuries such as, ACL tears, patellofemoral pain syndrome, stress fractures, Achilles tendinitis, and shin splints which can affect our attempts at being physically active! We are also more prone to long-term bone health issues like osteoporosis and knee osteoarthritis. Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Kerri Kulovitz, will discuss the causes of these injuries, how to recognize and treat them, and hopefully

how to prevent them from occurring. Lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 7 pm, Centre Club Libertyville, Club Room. There is no fee for this lecture but advance registration is required. Register at front desk or call 847.990.5750.
