  • IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION.READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING.

WARNING!Use this appliance only for its intended purpose as described in this Owner’s Manual.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONSWhen using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should be followed, including the following:

This refrigerator must be properly installed and located in accordance with the InstallationInstructions before it is used.

Do not allow children to climb, stand or hang on the shelves in the refrigerator. They coulddamage the refrigerator and seriously injurethemselves.

Do not touch the cold surfaces in the freezercompartment when hands are damp or wet. Skin may stick to these extremely cold surfaces.

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammablevapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or anyother appliance.

Keep fingers out of the “pinch point” areas;clearances between the doors and between the doors and cabinet are necessarily small. Be careful closing doors when children are in the area.

In refrigerators with automatic icemakers, avoid contact with the moving parts of the ejector mechanism, or with the heating elementthat releases the cubes. Do not place fingers orhands on the automatic icemaking mechanismwhile the refrigerator is plugged in.

Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning andmaking repairs.

NOTE: We strongly recommend that any servicing beperformed by a qualified individual.

Setting either or both controls to 0 (off) does not remove power to the light circuit.

Do not refreeze frozen foods which have thawed completely.

PROPER DISPOSAL OF THE REFRIGERATORChild entrapment and suffocation are not problemsof the past. Junked or abandoned refrigerators arestill dangerous…even if they will sit for “just a fewdays.” If you are getting rid of your old refrigerator, please follow the instructions below to help preventaccidents.

Before You Throw Away Your Old Refrigeratoror Freezer: Take off the doors.

Leave the shelves in place so that children maynot easily climb inside.

RefrigerantsAll refrigeration products contain refrigerants, which under federal law must be removed priorto product disposal. If you are getting rid of an old refrigeration product, check with thecompany handling the disposal about what to do.

USE OF EXTENSION CORDSBecause of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend against the use of an extension cord.

However, if you must use an extension cord, it is absolutely necessary that it be a UL-listed (in the UnitedStates) or a CSA certified (in Canada), 3-wire grounding type appliance extension cord having a groundingtype plug and outlet and that the electrical rating of the cord be 15 amperes (minimum) and 120 volts.

  • About the automatic icemaker.

    12

Automatic Icemaker (on some models)The icemaker will produce seven cubes per cycle—approximately 100–130 cubes in a 24-hour period, depending on freezercompartment temperature, roomtemperature, number of door openings and other use conditions.

See below for how to access ice and reachthe power switch.

If the refrigerator is operated before thewater connection is made to the icemaker, set the power switch in the O (off) position. The icemaker power light will turn greenwhen the freezer light switch is pressed inor when the freezer door is closed.

When the refrigerator has been connectedto the water supply, set the power switch tothe l (on) position.

The icemaker will fill with water when it cools to 15°F (–10°C). A newly installedrefrigerator may take 12 to 24 hours to beginmaking ice cubes.

You will hear a buzzing sound each time the icemaker fills with water.

Throw away the first few batches of ice toallow the water line to clear.

Be sure nothing interferes with the sweep of the feeler arm.

When the bin fills to the level of the feelerarm, the icemaker will stop producing ice. It is normal for several cubes to bejoined together.

If ice is not used frequently, old ice cubeswill become cloudy, taste stale and shrink.

NOTE: In homes with lower-than-average waterpressure, you may hear the icemaker cycle multipletimes when making one batch of ice.

Cleaning the OutsideThe door handles and trim. Clean with a clothdampened with soapy water. Dry with a softcloth. Do not use wax on the door handlesand trim.

Keep the outside clean. Wipe with a cleancloth lightly dampened with kitchenappliance wax or mild liquid dishdetergent. Dry and polish with a clean, soft cloth.

Do not wipe the refrigerator with a soiled dishcloth or wet towel. These may leave a residuethat can erode the paint. Do not use scouringpads, powdered cleaners, bleach or cleanerscontaining bleach because these products canscratch and weaken the paint finish.

The stainless steel panels and door handles. Stainless steel (on some models) can becleaned with a commercially availablestainless steel cleaner. A spray-on stainlesssteel cleaner works best.

Do not use appliance wax or polish on the stainless steel.

Cleaning the InsideTo help prevent odors, leave an open box ofbaking soda in the refrigerator and freezercompartments.

Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning. If thisis not practical, wring excess moisture out of sponge or cloth when cleaning aroundswitches, lights or controls.

Use an appliance wax polish on the insidesurface between the doors.

Use warm water and baking soda solution—about a tablespoon (15 ml) of baking sodato a quart (1 liter) of water. This both cleansand neutralizes odors. Rinse and wipe dry.

After cleaning the door gaskets, apply athin layer of petroleum jelly to the doorgaskets at the hinge side. This helps keepthe gaskets from sticking and bending outof shape.

Avoid cleaning cold glass shelves with hot waterbecause the extreme temperature difference maycause them to break. Handle glass shelvescarefully. Bumping tempered glass can cause it to shatter.

Do not wash any plastic refrigerator parts in the dishwasher.

Approved plasticwater supply lines are GE SmartConnect™Refrigerator Tubing (WX08X10002,WX08X10006, WX08X10015 andWX08X10025).When connecting your refrigerator to a GEReverse Osmosis Water System, the onlyapproved installation is with a GE RVKit. Forother reverse osmosis water systems, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. If the water supply to the refrigerator is froma Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration SystemAND the refrigerator also has a water filter, use the refrigerator’s filter bypass plug. Usingthe refrigerator’s water filtration cartridge inconjunction with the RO filter can result inhollow ice cubes. This water line installation is not warrantedby the refrigerator or icemaker manufacturer.Follow these instructions carefully tominimize the risk of expensive water damage.Water hammer (water banging in the pipes) in house plumbing can cause damage torefrigerator parts and lead to water leakage or flooding. Call a qualified plumber to correctwater hammer before installing the watersupply line to the refrigerator. To prevent burns and product damage, do nothook up the water line to the hot water line.If you use your refrigerator before connectingthe water line, make sure the icemaker powerswitch is in the O (off) position.Do not install the icemaker tubing in areaswhere temperatures fall below freezing. When using any electrical device (such as apower drill) during installation, be sure thedevice is double insulated or grounded in amanner to prevent the hazard of electricshock, or is battery powered. All installations must be in accordance withlocal plumbing code requirements.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN WHAT YOU WILL NEED

    • Copper or GE SmartConnect™ RefrigeratorTubing kit, 1/4″ outer diameter to connectthe refrigerator to the water supply. If usingcopper, be sure both ends of the tubing arecut square.

To determine how much tubing you need:measure the distance from the water valve on the back of the refrigerator to the watersupply pipe. Then add 8′ (2.4 m). Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing (about 8′ [2.4 m]coiled into 3 turns of about 10″ [25 cm]diameter) to allow the refrigerator to moveout from the wall after installation.GE SmartConnect™ Refrigerator Tubing Kitsare available in the following lengths:2′ (0.6 m) – WX08X100026′ (1.8 m) – WX08X1000615′ (4.6 m) – WX08X1001525′ (7.6 m) – WX08X10025Be sure that the kit you select allows at least8′ (2.4 m) as described above.

  • INSTALLING THE WATER LINE (CONT.)

NOTE: The only GE approved plastic tubing is that supplied in GE SmartConnect™Refrigerator Tubing kits. Do not use anyother plastic water supply line because theline is under pressure at all times. Certaintypes of plastic will crack or rupture with ageand cause water damage to your home.• A GE water supply kit (containing tubing,

shutoff valve and fittings listed below) isavailable at extra cost from your dealer orfrom Parts and Accessories, 800.626.2002(in Canada 1.888.261.3055).

    • A cold water supply. The water pressure mustbe between 20 and 120 p.s.i. (1.4–8.1 bar).

    • Power drill.• 1/2″ or adjustable wrench.• Straight and Phillips blade screwdriver.

    • Two 1/4″ outer diameter compression nutsand 2 ferrules (sleeves)—to connect thecopper tubing to the shutoff valve and therefrigerator water valve.OR

    • If you are using a GE SmartConnect™Refrigerator Tubing kit, the necessaryfittings are preassembled to the tubing.

    • If your existing copper water line has aflared fitting at the end, you will need anadapter (available at plumbing supplystores) to connect the water line to therefrigerator OR you can cut off the flaredfitting with a tube cutter and then use acompression fitting. Do not cut formed endfrom GE SmartConnect™ Refrigerator tubing.

    • Shutoff valve to connect to the cold waterline. The shutoff valve should have a waterinlet with a minimum inside diameter of5/32″ at the point of connection to the COLDWATER LINE. Saddle-type shutoff valves areincluded in many water supply kits. Beforepurchasing, make sure a saddle-type valvecomplies with your local plumbing codes.

    WHAT YOU WILL NEED (CONT.)

SHUT OFF THE MAIN WATERSUPPLYTurn on the nearest faucet long enough to clear the line of water.

Install the shutoff valve on the nearestfrequently used drinking water line.

    1

Choose a location for the valve that iseasily accessible. It is best to connect intothe side of a vertical water pipe. When it isnecessary to connect into a horizontalwater pipe, make the connection to the top or side, rather than at the bottom, to avoid drawing off any sediment fromthe water pipe.

    CHOOSE THE VALVE LOCATION2

DRILL THE HOLE FOR THE VALVE3

Drill a 1/4″ hole in the water pipe (even ifusing a self-piercing valve), using a sharpbit. Remove any burrs resulting fromdrilling the hole in the pipe.

Take care not to allow water to drain intothe drill.

Failure to drill a 1/4″ hole may result inreduced ice production or smaller cubes.

    Normal operating sounds.

Before you call for service…Troubleshooting Tips Save time and money! Review the charts on the followingpages first and you may not need to call for service.

Newer refrigerators sound different from older refrigerators. Modern refrigerators have more features and use newer technology.

    HUMMM...WHOOSH...

The new high efficiency compressor may run faster and longerthan your old refrigerator and you may hear a high-pitchedhum or pulsating sound while it is operating.

You may hear a whooshing sound when the doors close. This isdue to pressure equalizing within the refrigerator.

You may hear the fans spinning at high speeds. This happenswhen the refrigerator is first plugged in, when the doors areopened frequently or when a large amount of food is added tothe refrigerator or freezer compartments. The fans are helpingto maintain the correct temperatures.

The fans change speeds in order to provide optimal coolingand energy savings.

    CLICKS, POPS,CRACKS and SNAPS

You may hear cracking or popping sounds when therefrigerator is first plugged in. This happens as the refrigeratorcools to the correct temperature.

The freezer control will click when starting or stopping thecompressor.

Defrost timer snapping in and out of the defrost cycle.

Expansion and contraction of cooling coils during and afterdefrost can cause a cracking or popping sound.

On models with an icemaker, after an icemaking cycle, youmay hear the ice cubes dropping into the ice bucket.

On models with a dispenser, during water dispense, you may hear the water lines move at initial dispense and afterdispenser button is released.

    WATER SOUNDS

The flow of refrigerant through the freezer cooling coils maymake a gurgling noise like boiling water.

Water dropping on the defrost heater can cause a sizzling, popping or buzzing sound during the defrost cycle.

A water dripping noise may occur during the defrost cycle asice melts from the evaporator and flows into the drain pan.

Closing the door may cause a gurgling sound due to pressureequalization.

Do you hear what I hear? These sounds are normal.
