The work of the YMCA has never been more important to our community.
The past year we have maintained our focus on delivering on our strategic plan to ensure that there is long term sustainability and that we extend our reach in the community. We have very much aligned our strategic plan collectively along with the other YMCA Associations around the country sharing a Mission and Vision.
In January 2018 in a partnership between the YMCAs of Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria were implemented the second stage of operation of our long term partnership to build and operate 6 new child care centres, 13 community hubs, 12 single court stadiums and 1 learn to swim pool in growth corridors of Geelong and Melbourne. This stage was even more exciting because these project were opened at Torquay, Armstrong Creek and Bannockburn.
This partnership represents a significant investment from all YMCA Associations and we that the Directors of Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria, and the staff that are delivering community programs and facilities in the growth areas of Melbourne and Geelong.
While our operation remain vibrant and fulling the Mission of the YMCA we remain vigilant that we also need to remain relevant as an organisation to the communities that we engage with.
Within the YMCA Movement we are absolutely committed to being a sustainable community organisation that demonstrates its commitment through the delivery of programs and services that matter to the community. Over the past two years we are working together to ensure that YMCA’s can have more impact and projects such as a National Procurement entity will bring about opportunities to achieve savings to the Movement.
I am pleased by the engagement and commitment of our people and volunteers to making the YMCA a safe place for everyone. This has never been more important from a governance perspective, but to witness the systematic approaches and responses to the Child Safety has been an act of leadership. We
are proud that our standards are high and that our customers appreciate the fact that we have an active and public position on Child Safety in our programs and services.
I acknowledge the support and leadership from the Y Service Club of Geelong who have for over 65 years supported the work of the YMCA through fundraising, volunteering their time and talent. Our YMCA is better for the having such a wonderful group of people that contribute back to the community. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the funds that they committed to assist in the purchasing of the new sprung gymnastics floor this year.
The YMCA is also grateful to the grant providers, supporter and sponsors and to the parents who volunteer hours upon hours coaching basketball, turning sausages and assist in hosting events, raising funds to improve equipment and support great community inclusion in programs for those most in need. Thankyou.
I have been fortunate to work with a team of extremely dedicated board members this year and we have recognised the service of Jenny Speed, Sharon Jones, Simone Boer and Tracey Dore, who resigned this year after a number of years. I also acknowledge the work and commitment of the other members of the Board who have contributed to the governance of the YMCA. Our Board holds as a priority and the legacy that each Board Member seeks to leave is that our stewardship places the YMCA as a community organisation that truly makes the community healthier, happier and connected so thank you to Kate Klein, Bianca Paridaen, Jen McFarlane, Steve D’Andrea, Owen Kelso and Vesna Allan for your commitment.
And finally I wish to thank the amazing team of staff and volunteers that work, have fun and make the YMCA a place that is important in the community. Thank you!
John Weigl YMCA Geelong Inc. and Geelong and District YMCA Youth Services President
MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT – JOHN WEIGL
66
The world is changing at lightning speed and those who stand still will either be left behind or cease to exist. Just look at the disruptive products that have entered the industry of health and wellness. People are no longer required to be group fitness instructors, they can simply exercise at home or visit a gym with automated instructors. The invention of online exercise has its place, but the one thing that YMCA Geelong puts at the centre of our thinking is people and place.
We are seeking to build a community that is connected. That supports, encourages and delivers activities that empower people. We particularly have invested much energy into building capacity of our people through identifying opportunities for young people to strive and thrive.
Our workforce has 70% people under the age of 30 years and while youth is a big deal to us, so is the wisdom, experience and the ability to mentor and develop the next generation that come for our employees with life experience.
We believe in the power of inspired young people as a purpose can only be a reality if we have a diverse and giving workforce and volunteer base. So I want to thank each and every–one of our team at the Y. You do an amazing job.
Collectively the YMCA movement is having to transform into an organisation that can meet the needs of the community. Across Australia, our footprint has decreased from 22 Associations to 16 Associations, and while Geelong has been around for 65 years, it is import that we remain focused on being a modern, vibrant organisation that continues to grow and thrive.
Over the past two years the collective collaboration of Association Boards and managements have focussed on the future.
Our Towards One YMCA project has deliver significant benefits to the Movement through merchandise and procurement and collective projects.
Our operations are being led by dedicated leaders, Andrew Kidd, Paul Barbagallo and Nick Brimacombe and continue to respond to meet the needs of our customers. After 10 years of service Kimberley Maher- Community Program Co-ordinator left the Y. She had been instrumental in the development and delivery of School holiday program that has impacted more than 3000 children’s lives each year.
One of the highlights this year was definitely the hosting of the Staff and Volunteer Awards night in 2017. We inducted members to the Hall of Fame and Life Members to the Association and celebrated the invaluable work of our staff and volunteers.
We official named the basketball stadium after Craig Herbert, who for decades has engaged our volunteer led Basketball Club to provide a pathway to competitive basketball for hundreds of children each year.
It is never more important to note that it’s not the buildings that make the Y, it’s the people.
On a personal level I would like to thank the Board led by John Weigl for the continued support, commitment, and counsel. They exemplify the values of the YMCA and their expertise has been invaluable in the past 12 months.

HALL OF FAME
GEELONG
At our Staff and Volunteer Awards on 1st December, 2017, we paid tribute
to people who through their personal contribution to the YMCA either in
the capacity as a participant, parent, volunteer, staff member or donor have
demonstrated outstanding service to YMCA Geelong over a period of at
least 10 years and or has outstanding personal achievement bringing credit
and honour to the YMCA.
A special mention to Keith Roderick who assisted with handing out the
awards. Keith was inducted into the YMCA Hall of Fame in 2008 and has
been an incredible contributor to the YMCA Basketball Club. A quiet soldier
who is never at the forefront but provides unconditional support behind the
scenes and deeply cares about providing the opportunity of young people,
no matter their abilities, to be able to participate in sport.

Frances FallonFrances has almost raised her family, Lisa, Neal, Trish & Stacey at the YMCA. She has serviced as a committee member of the YMCA Basketball Club over a long period of time, and has always been a wonderful ambassador of the Y. For many years, Frances would bus into YMCA in Yarra Street and spend days volunteering to help out in administration or any task that Cindy, Tony and the team would ask. We thank you Frances, for your unwavering support and for a wonderful Fallon legacy that sees the next generation still engaged and committed to the Y. What a great role model you are.
YMCA Geelong was saddened at the passing of Frances in September 2018.

Ashley McDonaldAshley has been involved with the YMCA Basketball Club for over a decade. He is currently one of the Boys Junior Co-ordinators and has been a committee member for a long period of time.
Ashley teaches his kids to play the ‘Y’ way which is with total respect to the opposition: win, lose or draw. Although the basketball calendar is pretty full, Ashley is always looking to do more things such as tournaments with his team and is actively seeking to provide opportunities for young people to visit other YMCA ‘s overseas for games that provide experiences that help shape young men’s lives. He is always filling in and taking training if another coach is unable to be there on any given night. Through his hard work, Ash has helped make the YMCA Basketball club a family club within Basketball Geelong. His commitment to the kids is second to none. For Ash it is not just about winning but playing with respect.
Damien ArmourPlayed Division 1 with YMCA for 15
years.

Rachel CrawfordThe next inductee joined the YMCA as a
young country girl who moved to Geelong
from Wagga more than 17 years ago.
She had a strong background in
Gymnastics and was hoping to get work at
the YMCA.
As an athlete she was a consistent
performer but as a coach and employee
of the YMCA she has tough but realistic
understanding of what it takes to reach and
achieve goals in the sport of Competitive
Gymnastics.
Our Inductee is still currently employed
and although you might think that being
an employee in itself isn’t Hall of Fame
material it is the work ethic, above and
beyond and the hundreds of hours of extra
things she does because she absolutely
has a passion for the gymnastics and the
YMCA program.
The one thing that she often says to me is
that she is most grateful for the Y giving her
an opportunity and trusted her to lead the
Gymnastics program and develop it into
what is today a 1200-member club.
Congratulations Rachel Crawford
Catherine HaynesCathy became involved with YMCA Gymnastics Club when her daughter first joined us and from that point forward she has always been an active part of the Club. She gained her Judging accreditation, a Coaching accreditation and represented the YMCA and hundreds
of Competitions as a Judge. She also joined the staff for a short period in 2015 as the Payroll and HR Co-ordinator and Coach Development Co-ordinator.Cathy’s expertise in the Judging circles of Gymnastics is renowned and we are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful
community minded person volunteering time to Judge on our behalf.

Val ClarkOur next Inductee has been a member of the YMCA Ladies Service Club since 1968. Last month at the 50th Anniversary of the Y Ladies Service Club of Geelong, she was awarded the longest serving member of 49 years.
She has held most of the positions in the club. She is always ready and willing to help out with anything that has to do with the Y Ladies Service Club of Geelong or the YMCA.
Congratulations Valerie Clark!
John Pontefract
John has been a member of the
Geelong Y Service Club for some 23
years having joined in April 1994.
During this time, John has been
actively involved in numerous
fundraising and working bee
activities supporting YMCA Geelong.
In addition, John has represented

YMCA Geelong’s highest honour is the awarding of a Life Membership to
an individual. Life Membership is decided by the Board of YMCA Geelong
and reflects the long term commitment, contribution and impact the
recipient has made to the YMCA.
And to assist me with the presentations I would like to ask Kate Klein, who
has been on the Board for just over 5 years and is the immediate Past
President. Kate has over seen the change process that YMCA Geelong has
been through in the past 3 years and has been a valuable contributor to the
development of the Strategic Plan 2025.
Tonight we bestow three worthy individuals with this honour.

Elaine ThompsonElaine’s involvement with the YMCA began in 1990.
For more than 10 years she was part of the South Barwon
YMCA Little League managing teams. She also supported her late
husband Don, by completing many administrative tasks during this time as
Administrator of the under 13 Division.
For 14 years, two days each week, Elaine was the organiser and
administrator of the then “Deakin” now Newtown Social Basketball
program. The number of children playing each week in these programs
ranged from 120 to 250.
Elaine was a member of the YMCA Geelong Board for 10 years and was
Vice President for four years. During that time, she represented our YMCA
by being on the State Council of YMCA’s of Victoria where she was a
member of it’s Camping and 15th Anniversary committees.
Congratulations Elaine.

Helen & Daryl LewisBoth Helen and Daryl have contributed enormously to the YMCA through the Service Club involvement and while they have individually contributed it is fitting to honour together because they are truly a team.Daryl joined YMCA Geelong as a volunteer in 1967. He and Helen have served the Y together for more than 50 years.
Together they have coached a number of YMCA under age football sides starting in 1967 and continuing to the late 70’s. Both are active members of the respective Y Service Clubs of Geelong and are active and engaged members of the clubs.Daryl shares his keen interest of war history. Helen is the current President of the Ladies Service Club of Geelong. They have both served in varying Executive Positions. There is never a fundraising event, social gathering or activity that Daryl and Helen are not at.In looking through the Camp Wyuna photos there is also not many occasions that a working bee at Camp in the redevelopment period in 1980’s that didn’t feature the Lewis family. They have been in many service club projects in the past such as selling Christmas trees in Yarra Street, selling show bags at the Geelong Show and being willing volunteers at Geelong’s Carols by Candlelight which has raised more than $275,000 over past 5 years. As volunteers and leaders they have run holiday camps at Camp Wyuna, organised fund-raisers such as the Biggest Morning Tea (held in the afternoon at Newtown Stadium to capitalise on the influx of families after school), volunteering for the Combined Charities Christmas Card shop that once operated and pitching in to volunteer for the Gymnastics competitions BBQs.
Thank you Daryl and Helen for providing great service for our YMCA over a 50 year period.

40
Camping & Outdoors Education Award
Camping & Outdoors Education is a significant part of what we do at the
YMCA Geelong.
In the last financial year more than 7261 visitors, ate, slept and played at Camp Wyuna.
It delivered more than 15,118 bed nights, cooked and prepared 45,354 meals and
provided fun programs for nearly 60% of those who attended the camp.
We recognise the contribution that staff have made to ensure that our guests are
welcomed, connected to the YMCA and the quality of services and programs that are
delivered are seconded to none
THE FINALISTS ARE:Amanda Leishman • Ellie Jeffery
AND THE WINNER IS:
Ellie JefferyEllie is part of the programming staff at Camp Wyuna. She has
a can do attitude and is always willing to help others in any
area and people of all ages – and we are sure she will rise to
greater roles in the future.
Congratulations Ellie!
41
Volunteerism Award
YMCA was founded by volunteers more than 173 years ago and while we have developed paid
positions in our structure we could not survive without volunteers.
We are led by a volunteer Board of governors who want to ensure that the YMCA is around for
another 170 years, our programs, fundraising and events would not be possible without people
lending a hand.
We have staff that always go above and beyond and this doesn’t go without recognition, but
tonight we pay tribute to the people that put aside their own ambitions and believe with passion
in the contributing to the community to have an impact on someone else’s life.
AND THE JOINT WINNERS ARE:
Sam BuckbySam has been involved with the YMCA Basketball Club for many years and is
currently the coach of three teams for the 2017/ 2018 summer season.
Sam believes in the ‘Y’ way which is with total respect to the opposition: win, lose or
draw. Sam is always at the forefront of any club initiative to make the club stronger
and more relevant to our families. Sam is always there to help, with other teams and
has inspired others to become coaches. Through his hard work, Sam has helped
make the YMCA Basketball Club a destination club within Basketball Geelong. His
commitment to the kids and our program is unconditional. Clubs such as the YMCA
do not exist without volunteers like Sam whose contribution over a long time has
been immeasurable.
AND
Craig Barnes
Craig has been involved with the YMCA Basketball Club for many years and as club
Treasurer may not have the same profile as club coaches but the administrators do
a lot of work behind the scene. Clubs would not last long if we did not have people
like Craig involved. He is always looking for ways to increase family engagement in
the club and works with many families to ensure they can continue to participate.
Through Craig’s hard work the club is financially stable and this allows us to introduce
programs and events, other clubs can only wish for.
Being the club treasurer is not a glamorous role and continuing growth, through
Craig’s hard work, makes his role all the more demanding Congratulations Craig.
THE FINALISTS ARE:Neal Fallon • Sam Buckby • Craig Barnes
