In fact, they have officially been announced as the cream of the crop! Owner Antonino Lo Iacono has recently been awarded a Special Mention award at the Asia Pacific round of the Gelato World Tour on March 22nd. “I am lucky to have had my daughter and wife alongside me at the competition. We have had a great time and we’re very proud of the award,” said Lo Iacono. After thirty years in the gelato making business it’s no wonder that he was congratulated for the technical excellence of his product. The scoring system at the competition is comprised of three components. Votes by the public served as the largest percentage of the final scores. Lining up to taste each flavour, the Singapore locals were understandably eager to sink their teeth into those crunchy cones with the sweltering temperatures soaring past 30 degrees daily. Also contributing to the scores were points given by a panel of media personnel and most importantly a selection of widely respected chefs participating as the technical jury. Justin Queck, President of the technical jury and head Chef of Sky on 57, one of Singapore’s most highly regarded restaurants personally awarded the Special Mention to Gelatony. So what made Lo Iacono’s flavour so good? The official judges scored based on the taste of the gelato, the structure and the appearance. The flavour of Fig Marmalade, Lemon Zest and Dark Chocolate was not only delicious and visually appealing but also had a perfect structure meaning that it held its shape when served in a cup and had a dense, smooth texture which is what scored them the award. With Italian blood Lo Iacono and his family have a passion for sweet treats and the gelataria tucked into the front of DaVinici’s restaurant is the only place to get your scoop of the good stuff. “We love the community at Summer Hill. The inspiration for our flavours of course comes from Italy because we are Italian and we do a lot of traditional flavours like hazelnut, chocolate and pistachio but at the same time we like the Australian food culture and try to incorporate more Australian flavours that people like,” said Lo Iacono. Eighteen flavours are on display at Gelatony so you have plenty to choose from. Pop in to 25 Lackey St, Summer Hill to pay them a visit for an icy treat. The good weather won't last forever so we’ll be milking it for all it’s worth! What we discovered at at LuMi was a menu that speaks of Sydney now. This is exciting food, that sits back and is as relaxed as the restaurant setting.
