What is Gender Equality?

Gender Equality is when both, men and women, enjoy the

same rights and perform the same duties as given in the

Constitution.

Gender equality is applicable in all sectors of the society.

Gender Discrimination is when the law is different

for a men and women in a particular, field or sector

or aspect.

Since long, India has been an example for gender

discrimination.

Before the British era, India witnessed social evils

like child marriage, purdah system, dowry system

and sati –

a) Child marriage – Girl child is forced

to marry an old man.

b) Purdah System – Girls were to stay

behind curtain

c) Dowry system – Family of bride is

forced to pay money or give gifts to

groom

d) Sati – Widow of a man was forced to

ump in the same fire as in the

husband I cremation

Gender discrimination exists in our society,

but is it recognised by the members of our

society?

Female foeticide: Amongst all the States of

India, Rajasthan has one of the highest

rates of female foeticide and infanticide in

the country. Some communities don’t even

consider it a murder.

Rapes and eve teasing: If a girl is born after all, these are the events that threaten her self respect and modesty.

Sexual Harassment at work: This is on rise since the number of working women in India has increased. A menace in the lives of the urban women.

According to Census 2011, the sex ratio dropped to

919/1000 against 927/1000 in 2001 census. Yes,

we are a developing superpower.

India is ranked as the worst place to live in the world

for women, according to a G20 survey.

The 2014 NCRB report shows that the incidence of

crime against women is 3,37,922 in India as whole.

Out of this Uttar Pradesh has the maximum of 38,467

incidents

One crime against women – every 3 mins

One molestation case – every 15 mins

One rape – every 20 mins

One sexual harassment case – every 53

mins

One dowry death – every 77 mins

IN SCHOOL

Primary education should be moral based to teach

the value of respecting women

Redesign the curriculum to include, both taught and

practical application of moral values.

Self defence techniques should be taught to girls of

all ages right from the time they are in school.

SECURITY SERVICES

Helpline services with specialised

counsellors and active management.

Privatizing or commercializing the

security services will increase security

for women and make their own city a

better city to live at any time

INDIVIDUAL

Educate yourself about the rights of the Girl Child.

Contact local, state, and national polities. Write letters asking

for their opinion on the rights of the Girl Child

Talk to your parents about the Deaf society. Educate the deaf

people in your life!

Advocate for awareness of the Deaf Environment . Begin a

social awareness / human rights club.
