What is gender gap?

Difference in opinions or attitudes between men and women concerning a variety of public and private issues, including political candidates, parties, or programs. Until the 1980s men and women in the U.S. exhibited similar voting habits. Since then, however, women have been more likely than men to support the Democratic Party and liberal policies, particularly on issues such as equal employment opportunity, child care, and gun control. In contrast, in western Europe women historically have been more likely than men to support conservative political parties.

Facebook is used widely by the students in fulfilling their basic needs and interaction. It was becoming a popular medium for socializing online and tools to facilitate friendship. Female students used Facebook for different kind of motives from social interaction to communication. The frequent use of Facebook brought an addiction toward the site and simultaneously influent students’ daily life at large. The phenomenon of Facebook addiction in Malaysia is rising among university students especially female. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between female students’ motives for Facebook use and Facebook addiction.

The five motives identified were social interaction, passing time, entertainment, companionship, and communication.

This study involved 380 female students (Facebook users) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Tenaga Nasional. Findings of the study showed that there are significant relationship between female students’ motives for Facebook use and Facebook addiction. As a conclusion, social interaction, passing time, entertainment, companionship and communication motives were among the major contributor to the addiction of Facebook site. It is hoped that the results of the study will be applicable to service providers, current users, and potential users of Facebook. This study recommends that motives for Facebook use is one of the factors contributing to Facebook addiction among students.

How big is the gender gap at schools around the world?

Page 14: Gender gap

Globally, more children are in primary school than ever before. Yet an estimated 57 million remain out of school, and gender disparities are large in many countries. How big is the gender gap in schools around the world? How has the picture changed in recent years?

The UN uses a gender parity index (GPI), comparing girls' gross enrollment rates to those of boys, to track progress towards the millennium development goal (MDG) target to achieve parity in primary and secondary education by 2015. A GPI lower than 1.0 signifies more boys in school than girls, with scores above 1.0 reflecting more girls than boys.

three to one.

At the global level, the MDG target on parity at primary school has already been met. Estimates of global progress can mask stark differences at the country or regional level, however. Today, the gender gap in primary education is concentrated in a much smaller group of countries. The visualisation above shows how the picture has changed since the 1970s.

In Pakistan, there are an estimated 82 girls for every 100 boys at primary school. While still far from parity, this reflects significant progress since 1990, when there were only 52 girls for every 100 boys, and even more since the early 1970s, when estimates suggest boys outnumbered girls by almost three to one.

Things You Didn’t Know About The Gender Gap

Women who work part time actually earn more than men who work part time.

Page 18: Gender gap

The wage gap is smaller the more educated and less married women are. But then there’s motherhood. Ouch.

The smallest gender gap for college graduates is among people who studied architecture.

The gender wage gap is smallest among African Americans and biggest among Asians.
