UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSIONGod of the prophets, we confess that we have failed to heed your word. You stand as our all-powerful God, yet we are lured away by other powers. You offer to help, heal, and guide us, yet we want to rely on our own efforts. Forgive us, God of grace. Set us free from the idols of our culture. Reveal to us your presence and path so that we may know and follow you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell. The third day, he rose again from the dead and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

REBECCA CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY AT FPC!On June 1st, Designated Associate Pastor Rebecca Chancellor will mark one year here at First Presbyterian Church in Salina. It hardly seems as if a year has passed! We are so thankful that God has called Rebecca in our midst, and we are awed by her passion and her zeal for ministry. She has touched so many lives, and brought so many new and energetic ideas. If you happen to see her slow down enough to engage in conversation with her, tell her congratulations and thanks. Or, better yet, indulge her in one of her true loves: Buy her a cup of fresh coffee!

FPC GROUNDS WORKDAY: JUNE 4, 8 AM – 12 PMYou are invited to a workday to help Ed and the Trustees maintain FPC's grounds. If you don't mind a little outdoor work and landscaping, then you are perfect for this project! Ed will have tools available at the church, but feel free to bring whatever you'd like to help! Our goal is to have about 15 or so people sign-up to help, so we can get the grounds in order for the months to come. Please contact the church office ASAP, if you are available to help! Afterwards, there will be pizza served in the courtyard, to celebrate YOUR hard work!

CELEBRATION FOR THE REV. DR. CHARLIE SMITH: JUNE 5As many of you know, Charlie graduated with his Doctor of Ministry on May 7th! This is an exciting accomplishment in Charlie’s life, and one that we all want to recognize and celebrate! During worship on June 5th, Charlie will be presented with his doctoral robe on behalf of the congregation. Following worship, all are invited to a cake and punch reception in Charlie’s honor.

FAITH FAMILIES ICE CREAM SOCIAL: JUNE 8 Our last Faith Families event for the 2015-16 year will be an ice cream social and games in the courtyard on Wednesday, June 8, 7:00 p.m. This event will be hosted by the Congregational Care & Nurture Committee. FPC members and friends are all welcome, and there may be some friendly competition between our Faith Families. Come join us for ice cream and fun!

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY MEETS MAY 31Our last Women’s Bible Study for this school year will be on Tuesday, May 31st at 5:30 p.m. in the Hope Room. All women are welcome! Our Lesson will be on the River of Life: Hope.

PROJECT SALINA: CANS OF TUNA NEEDEDThere are still a few days left in May to contribute cans of tuna in our Project Salina food drive! Thanks to everyone who contributed nearly 700 cans, surpassing the joint goal of FPC Salina and Sunrise Presbyterian to each collect 626 cans.

NEW BUILDING ACCESS SYSTEMFor additional safety and security, a door access system has been installed on the two south entrances of the church. The south exterior stairwell glass doors will remain secured, and to request access, you would need to press the button on the door station, mounted outside, to reachthe Presbytery office. The main FPC entrance will be open most normal business hours, and secured after. To request access, when interior vestibule doors are secured, press the button on the door station, mounted inside, and it will ring 1 of 4 staff offices. If you have any questions, please contact Beth or Melanie.

ASHBY HOUSE SUMMER WORK DAYSSign-up now to be part of a local mission team helping at the renovated transitional housing owned by Ashby House. The Social Justice & Mission Committee is hoping to have mission teams for three Saturdays this summer— June 18, July 16, and August 6, all beginning at 9:00 a.m. Sign-up sheets are in the main lobby of the church, or you can call/email the church office to sign-up for one of the Saturdays. Look for more information in the June newsletter. Questions? Talk to Brigid Hall or Rebecca Chancellor.

NEW MEMBER MEETING EVERY SECOND SUNDAYOn the 2nd Sunday of each month, there is a New Members Inquiry Meeting in the Hope Room following worship. Come join us if you would like more information about First Presbyterian Church and our ministries, or if you are ready to join our congregation as a member. You may also talk to Charlie or Rebecca any time.

ARE YOU A VETERAN?Happy Memorial Day! This is one of two national holidays in which we salute and focus on those who defend our freedoms. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and

honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served in the military -- in wartime or peacetime. Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service. Over the summer, FPC Salina would like to compile a list of veterans in our midst, and to honor them in November. If you are a veteran, or have any family members who have served in the armed forces, please provide the information to the church office so that we can compile a special commemorative tribute.

VBS VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED!FPC and Sunrise Presbyterian will co-host Heartland Traveling Day Camp (VBS) for all children currently in Kindergarten through 6th grades, to be held at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, June 13-17. FPC still needs volunteers to provide a meal to 5 staff and help with children's snack time. Volunteer forms are available on the table outside the Chapel, or you may contact Penni White directly to sign-up. Volunteer training for volunteer counselors and youth counselors will be Sunday June 12 at 6:30 PM at Sunrise Presbyterian Church.

RIVER FESTIVAL SUNDAY: JUNE 12Be sure to attend worship on Sunday, June 12, to hear Ciera MacKenzie perform! For more information, visit her website: www.cieramackenzie.com.

SUMMER SOUL-STICE SERIES WHEN: 9:30 AM – TUESDAYS, JUNE 7 and 21, JULY 12 and 26, AUGUST 9 WHERE: FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 8TH AND MULBERRY STREETS

CONTACT: MARTHA RHEA – (785) 825-9320 or [email protected] SODERBERG – (785) 827-3225 or [email protected]

First Presbyterian Church is sponsoring its fifth Summer Soul-Stice Series, scheduled every other Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM in the Conference Room at the church at 8th and Mulberry Streets, unless otherwise noted. The Series is eclectic in nature, this year exploring “Called to ….” The Series examines what it means to be “called to” a profession or mission in life and some unique ways people have responded.

The informal sessions are facilitated by a variety of leaders who have a story to share, as well as encourage discussion and learning. Time for each segment is approximately one hour. The entire Series is free and open to the public, with child care provided if requested. The Summer Soul-Stice Series for 2016 includes:

June 7 Called to…Unravel Place led by Robert Possehl (Note location: Salina Art Center Warehouse, 149 South 4th Street.) June 21 Called to…Transformation led by SuEllen Fried July 12 Called to…Listen led by Glen Stovall July 26 Called to…Cultivate led by Emily Rude August 9 Called to…Kindness led by Debbie Rivers

FEATURING PAPERMAKER: ROBERT POSSEHL June 7 - Robert Possehl is a Wisconsin-based papermaker, known for his work with native, non-native, and invasive plant fibers. By making paper from these materials he seeks to recover the stories and histories embedded in a landscape's memory. During the Soul-Stice hour Possehl will explore place-based papermaking as a means to better understand and honor our relationship to place. Then as the Salina Art Center's artist at this year's Smoky Hill River Festival, Possehl plans an installation where he, volunteers, and Festival-goers will transform local plant material into sheets of handmade paper, forming the basic building blocks of the work. As the installation evolves over the course of the Festival, participants will transform the site into a new landscape. (Note location: Salina Art Center Warehouse, 149 South 4th Street.)
