treatment and discomfort Many people are concerned with the radiation exposure Have you gone on

digital radiographs which is significantly less exposure than the older film version and much less than medical x-rays For further safety we use lead aprons with thyroid shields Nevertheless we always recommend radiographs when the benefits outweigh any potential harmful affects We assess each person as an individual and recommend an updated full set of radiographs based on past and current oral and systemic health status Why are radiographs so important They reveal what we cant see such as the degree of periodontal disease tooth decay and infections The bacteria such as shown on the left are

Congested sinus are more common during allergy and the cold and flu season Cold viruses thrive in dry conditions another reason colds are more common in the winter Antibiotics dont work against viruses Taking them wont get you well any faster and their overuse can cause the serious and growing problem of

antibiotic-resistant bacteria If you come down with the common cold what remedies can relieve congestion and cold symptoms Water and other fluids You cant flush a cold out of your system but drinking plenty of fluids can help prevent dehydration And yes chicken soup is soothing because of its possible anti-inflammatory and mucus-thinning effects Over-the-counter cold and cough medications in older children and adults Nonprescription decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief but wont prevent a cold

or shorten its duration and most have some side effects Experts agree that these medications are dangerous in children younger than age 2 Keep in mind that acetaminophen (Tylenol and others) can cause serious liver damage or liver failure if taken in doses higher than recommended Read the labels of any cold medication carefully to make sure you are not overdosing

Humidifiers can add moisture to your home and help relieve dry mucous membranes that cause a stuffy nose and scratchy throat Make sure you change the water in your humidifier daily and clean the unit according to the manufacturers instruction to avoid

mold fungi and bacterial growth Zinc For years cold sufferers have treated their symptoms with over-the-counter remedies containing zinc The latest clinical trial research has shown that zinc does appear to help Research has shown that possibly taking a zinc supplement regularly might reduce the number of colds each year Basically the recommended supplement amount for adult women is 8 mg a day and 11 mg for men It is best to talk with your doctor about dosage as large amounts of zinc may be toxic Other Zinc cautions include lozenges that can leave a bad taste in your mouth and some people have reported nausea as a side effect The FDA warns that zinc-based nasal sprays can take away your sense of smell possibly for good

Many patients have found congestion relief and seem to have the clearest sinuses using a Neti Pot A neti pot is a container designed to rinse the nasal cavity Several brands are available in pharmacies and health food stores and usually cost

under $20 Neti enthusiasts say that regular use of a neti pot is more effective for nasal allergy and sinus problems than are over-the-counter medications Always use water that is distilled sterile previously boiled and cooled or filtered with an absolute pore size of one micron or smaller Use about 16 ounces (1 pint) of the lukewarm processed water and add the neti pot saline solution You can make your own solution by adding 1 teaspoon of salt Some people add Y2 teaspoon of baking soda to buffer the solution and make it gentler on the nose Always clean your pot after each use with sterile water and dont use left-over solution It is recommended using a ceramic neti pot as they can be washed in the dishwasher Always allow your neti pot to dry completely in between uses There have been reports of people using tap

water or left-over solution who contracted encephalitis caused by an infection with Naegleria fowleri It is rare but this is a lifeshythreatening amoeba can be found in tap water and is common in rivers and lakes
