GREETINGS FROM MAYOR DONALD R. GREBIEN

The work of the Parks and Recreation Division does not end after the summer camps

have ended and the pool has closed. It is quite the opposite. With the cooler air comes

many opportunities; from visiting the Fright Night In the Park Halloween events, taking

part in recreational and wellness classes, relaxing with a holiday bus trip to New York

City, to enjoying the spectacular sights of the Winter Wonderland.

We continue to invest in our recreational facilities and offerings available throughout

the city.

This spring, through the dedicated work of the 21 Heroes committee, a monument was

erected in Slater Park to honor the 21 Vietnam Veterans killed in action from

Pawtucket.

The summer meals program expanded to provide an additional venue at Slater Park

along with providing lunches to the pool on the weekends. The first dinner program in

the City was piloted at San Bento Park and later at Payne Park during the youth

basketball league.

Pawtucket moved forward to promote positive alternatives for individuals in the com-

munity including the Midnight Basketball program. The Pawtucket/Central Falls Youth

Coalition was created to engage high school students and provide them with leadership

training, volunteering, job readiness mentoring and other additional support. The first

Pawtucket Scouting Expo was held at Slater Park with local boys and girls scouting

organizations to help promote membership and a positive outlet for the community’s

youth.

The City is proud to offer many different recreational opportunities to our residents,

such as free children’s and musical performances, wellness and recreation classes, our

skate park, Festival Pier, the Pawtucket Arts Festival and the Slater Park Fall Festival.

Disc Golf continues to grow following its first full season completed including the

implementation of the summer adult league. We also look to continue our collaboration

with other organizations during these events, such as Operation Hunger Down to collect

canned goods and non-perishable food items.

This summer, Slater Park was named “the best free attraction in the Blackstone Valley”

by Rhode Island Monthly magazine. The Dog Park was named one of the top ten dog

parks in the state by “Best Things Rhode Island”. In addition, Slater Park will be

welcoming the National Carousel Association for its 2018 Carousel Convention in

September.

The City of Pawtucket strives to be an outstanding community for people to live, work,

play, and raise a family. We are committed to providing the highest quality services to

you. It’s my sincere hope that you are able to enjoy the wide array of recreational

opportunities our city has to offer. I hope to see you at a number of our wonderful

recreational facilities and events this year.

Historic Daggett House Located in Slater Memorial Park, this home is

Merrimac. This house was built in 1685. House may be rented for small parties.
