According to two sources, he spent a year and a half at Dubai's Faculty of Islamic Studies, before being expelled for “corrupt beliefs and his manipulation of Emirati youths.” He later studied at al-Bahrain Sharia Institute and Beirut's Imam Al-Sharia Al-Awzai University. A list of clerics instructed him and granted him Ijaazah there. This influence he exercised in recruiting fighters for Syria to considerable effect. The Shaykh also built up an online following, published books, and lectured under the names Abu Sulami, Abu Dergham, and Abu Hammam al-Athari.
